South Jersey says Lee-dle rhyming with needle

That's exactly how we pronounce it in Germany. At least that's how they say it in their own TV ads.

I was told "LIE-dull" from my colleagues (in the DC Metro Area) when I moved here, and I've never heard anyone else pronounce it that way, so I've surmised that's incorrect.

Before I was corrected by all my pretentious neighbors, I pronounced it, "Lid-el." I did not know it's European origin

Where I grew up (Northern VA) people say "Lit-dull"

This is probably the most random map I’ve seen. Nice

We've had them for at least a few years on Long Island; didn't realize they weren't pretty much nationwide yet like Aldi. We often get things pretty late here.

I live on the west coast and have never heard of Lidl. What is it?

5

u/horiz0n7 2d ago

A German discount grocery store chain. If you know Aldi, it's similar to that, but their stores are bigger and they sell more stuff, including a lot more non-grocery items than Aldi.

3

u/Magooose 2d ago

Thanks, but I’ve never been an Aldi either. Not a single one in our state.

2

u/danhm 2d ago

Imagine if Trader Joe's sold more normal groceries at below normal prices.

u/LiqdPT 2d ago

Aldi isn't nationwide, afaik. I've never seen one.

Edit: just checked. 38 states. Nothing out west other than California and the southernmost states.

Do some states have both ALDI and Lidl?

They are brothers, broke up over cigarettes in Europe either or not both

2

u/nickeisele 3d ago

Georgia has both. I can’t speak for the other states.

u/unlimitedshredsticks 2d ago

Manhattan has one of each, soon to be Brooklyn too. So New York does

1

u/Tnkgirl357 2d ago

Aldi is all over PA, I guess Lidl only in the eastern part though

1

u/morhavok 2d ago

North Carolina has both

1

u/dschep 2d ago

Virginia also has both.

1

u/Alboto_the_only 3d ago

There's at least one in south carolina that I frequent.

First Aldi, now Lidl? When are we going to get Globus and Edeka?

Sokka-Haiku by jkmapping:

First Aldi, now Lidl?

When are we going to get

Globus and Edeka?

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Does US Lidl have big american food packages or tiny european ones?
