She's an outdoor fern. I've got her too late to plant outside so she rests indoors until spring. Haven't seen new fronds for two months but it's expected 🥲

User Ferns Now & then! 1 month difference ✨

I couldn’t figure out how to add pics in the comments of my other post so reposting! 1 month difference of this maidenhair in a self watering pot

~3 inch terra cotta pot w/out drainage hole, thrifted glass bowl, planted in sphagnum moss, sits in an East facing window, it hasn’t been fertilized yet — but I will down the road! Super forgiving and there never been a brown frond with this set up ✨

User Ferns Maidenhair fern thriving even in Canadian Winter!

I’m so thrilled by how well my maidenhair fern has progressed in the last 6 months! Despite the ambient humidity hovering between 25-35 % in the last 3 months with indoor heating, my fern is really happy and looking much lusher than it did mid-August. It’s a pot that was briefly sold at IKEA that has terracotta pot suspended in a water reservoir. I moved it to lechuza pon in the summer, and I only fill the reservoir, I don’t pour water directly in the pon. It seems to wick exactly the amount of water it needs this way. It gets medium indirect light from ceiling grow lights, and now in winter it gets maybe an hour of sun in late afternoon. It sits 15 feet from the window, so for most of the year there is no sun that reaches all the way there.

I’m in an apartment complex in Montreal with central hot water heating. It gets super dry - to maintain my humidity at 25-35% requires 3 humidifiers running 24/7. They go through more than 30 litres of water (7-8 gallons) daily to run… Temperature is 18-24 Celsius depending on time of day and amount of sunlight streaming in.

Maidenhair in a 3” terra cotta pot in a thrifted bowl! There is not a drainage hole and the medium is pure sphagnum. I haven’t had a single brown frond — and since taking this photo — growth has exploded!

User Ferns Help needed

Hi!

I am not so new with ferns, but my history withem them is not good. All ferns I ever had keep dying on me and I want to change that.

Pictures I post is my new fern that started to go yellow and I discovered some holes in its leaves (not so sure if they were there when I bought it).

Why it is turning yellow and what are those holes? I'm thinking about some parasite, maybe.

Been with me for a 2 weeks. You can see growth of new leaves but old ones are of my concern. They started to twist as well

Got a P. elephantotis a while back and when I went to repot it I found tons of baby plants on the substrate. They all used to be as big as the smallest ones you see in the picture.

I have multiple ferns at home… I had left this self watering pot with clay soil. I had planted basil seeds… those seeds didn’t sprout. I just left this on the shelf. After many months of waiting to see what was growing. Now I see these baby ferns. 🥹

Question Cutting back ferns for transport

Advice please! What is the best way to transport Pteris ferns when flying?

Assuming I cannot take the whole pot with soil, should I cut off all the fronds and carefully wrap the rhizome in damp paper? Once home, should I put the rhizome in a pot to recover, or can they go directly into the ground?

All advice appreciated.

Rabbit's foot fern. If I had to guess it's been in the same 6 inch pot for about three years now.

It's been struggling more and more over the past ~3 months. Fronds are browning, or sometimes turning pale before dropping. I'm thinking it may finally be at its limit. I'm going to amp up the fertilizer amount briefly and hope for the best. Otherwise it's going to be a fun time separating this mess a propagating whatever I can save.

Question Wrinkly staghorn fern shield frond

Have been away for 2 weeks but it rained. Can't tell if my staghorn is over or under watered!

All fronds look ok, but biggest shield frond is brown and wrinkled. More crisp than soggy so I'm thinking under??
