Do you see 2? What am I missing?

/img/bicojzajcvbe1.jpeg

Are there 2 black gentlemen in this photo? I see 1 in the center of the photo. The comments on the original post all seem to see 2.

If you zoom in you can see the same pattern of forehead and nose shine in the red circle aa the blue circle.

This is what happens when people take pictures of pictures on their phone, then they get quality nuked from being copied on social media over and over again until there's no color accuracy. This was probably originally a photo on glossy paper, probably a school yearbook photo. If you take a picture of it with flash or in direct light it'll wash out like this. You can clean it up a bit with leveling to correct the color.

Have a look at the same photo, but re-leveled a bit to address those deficiencies -- literally did this in ms paint. Phones "secretly" (not really but most people don't know how it works) apply a lot of post-processing to images, the biggest offender being "white balance". This is not a new problem either.

To understand it we gotta go back to early film development practices and its legacy in digital photography. Tech companies continue to push post-processing into camera apps to the point you have to download open source camera apps to disable the post-processing to get the raw, unprocessed data necessary to get decent photos of your friends. Some companies are so averse to this they have moved post-processing into the firmware so you can't disable it. Many phones cannot provide 'raw' data; It will export to JPEG and then the phone will convert it to a 'raw' format, which rather defeats the entire point of a 'raw' mode.

afaik (I don't follow the mobile phone market for trends), Apple still hasn't done much to address the problem. Google took a couple steps with a (literal) diversity hire - Dr. Monk, who helped them redesign some of the post-processing and incorporate it into the Pixel line of phones. Of course, there are better solutions heading to market.

IMO, spraying a social problem with even more sensors and AI seems like it's really just adding gasoline to the fire; What's needed is for companies (and people like you, reading this) not thinking of a digital photo as "point and shoot" with auto focus, auto color, auto everything, and no raw data storage. Film development was a multi step process for a reason (variations in environmental lighting basically guarantee every roll of film needs slightly different processing) and while polaroid did eventually become a thing, it never matched the dynamic color range of its conventional film counter-parts. What's more, if the development of that film was bad, you could just take it somewhere else for "re-prints" that were more color-accurate.

We lost that customization with digitization, and the result has been less colorful, out of focus messes like this passing for "state of the art", while companies try to pour as much AI and beauty filtering on as possible to the point none of us can take photos of each other without it looking fake and synthetic.

Wait until you find the third one

7

u/trotting_pony 15h ago

Don't forget the one in the white shirt's hair.

5

u/SirKlawj 14h ago

🥹 You can see me? I'm the hidden 3rd black person in the picture, and only the chosen one can see me

3

u/Zaros262 14h ago

I think you're tripping. If that's another person, his face is way smaller than everyone else's

2

u/Remarkable_Yak_883 14h ago

Nah that’s a ghost

2

u/Few-Mycologist-2379 14h ago

I think that’s a kiss shirt.

2

u/kingofping4 14h ago

You're tripping. The photo is in a display case, you've circled some glare/reflection on the glass.

1

u/TypographySnob 13h ago

That's just Bughuul

1

u/shontonabegum 12h ago

An interdimensional non human intelligence?

1

u/bryfy77 9h ago

That looks like a Kiss shirt.

I was expecting the version by Wall of Voodoo for some reason

1

u/Jaded-Researcher2610 6h ago

you may be telling the truth, boy

u/fried_caviar 15h ago

When this dude eats chocolate, he needs to be careful or else he'll bite his fingers.

20

u/Chef_Money 15h ago edited 15h ago

Looks like a fighter that needs to be unlocked

3

u/Dimirina 15h ago

Alrighty then! Looks like you've discovered a real-life Easter egg, but perhaps it's hiding behind the punchline curtain!

1

u/PresqPuperze 7h ago

That’s why he’s wearing white gloves when eating chocolate.

3

u/Oknohg 15h ago

The Darkness!

u/Top-Arachnid-394 16h ago

Yooooooo....this is abuse😂😂😂😂😂that camera needs to be politically corrected

64

u/indyK1ng 14h ago

Looks like the photo was shot on film. Older color film stocks struggled with darker skin tones and Kodak didn't really fix it until the 90s. It's also just known to be hard to photograph groups with a wide range of skin tones because of how much dynamic range they can require.

20

u/Telvin3d 11h ago

And Kodak only fixed it because furniture and chocolate companies complained they couldn’t photograph their products correctly

1

u/KillerArse 2h ago

Did you also see that tiktok?

27

u/Abyss_of_Dreams 15h ago

This is like the white girl on the beach image.

62

u/Atheistprophecy 15h ago

Photographers often focus on getting the lighting right, making sure darker skin doesn’t get lost in shadows by using extra lights or reflectors.

School photographers are a joke due to nepotism

23

u/ImKindaBoring 14h ago

Nepotism… or just finding the cheapest option possible.

9

u/Atheistprophecy 14h ago

A cheap Phtogrpaher is basically anyone with a camera. Maybe they used a school camera.

27

u/Chullasuki 16h ago

There is another black dude in front of the one that's easier to see.

9

u/Sad_Commission6715 15h ago

Why's no one talking about the one who's spitting light?😭

7

u/LeRoyShow 14h ago

I wish I knew where my old yearbooks (1996ish) were. There was a class photo where a black guy was standing in the back row in front of the blackboard. The photographer noticed he couldn't see him in the camera....so he HAD SOMEONE OUTLINE HIM WITH CHALK for the photo.

Can you imagine if that happened today?

2

u/El_dorado_au 7h ago

You better watch how you talkin' and where you walkin'

Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk

8

u/clockworkittens 15h ago

I spent way too long looking for John Cena.

3

u/Seniorcoquonface 14h ago

Bros not even black at this point, he's v0ïð

4

u/JigglePhysicist0000 13h ago

Imagine needing this joke explained.

3

u/Snoo-62868 13h ago

You haven’t unlocked him yet. Geez does nobody play fighting games anymore?

5

u/Canavansbackyard 15h ago

How is this a joke?

2

u/Ok_Train4119 14h ago

If you look closely in between the white girl in the bottom middle of the picture and the black guy with glasses in the center of the picture, you'll find the 2nd black guy. He's just so dark-skinned that he blends in with the guy with the glasses.

1

u/OnoALT 15h ago

The other one

1

u/Emeegee713 15h ago

Blue and black shirt, black and white shirt, black shirt

1

u/Jaded_Look_4044 15h ago

there was a popular facebook group called shittingbricks about a decade ago for posts like this. We should bring it back.

1

u/FourScoreTour 13h ago

OK, I didn't see him.

1

u/im_a_hufflepuff_ 12h ago

Y’all. 💀

1

1

u/360NoScoped_lol 11h ago

Turn up your brightness and look at the center of the image.

1

u/KSJ15831 10h ago

Bro, I thought there was a tiny black man sitting on the long-haired person's lap. I thought the hair was the face.

1

u/Dependent_Use3791 8h ago

Struggled until I disabled night mode on my phone and turned up brightness

1

u/SokkaHaikuBot 8h ago

Sokka-Haiku by Dependent_Use3791:

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

It's a bit blurry, but there is a second guy right in front of him.

0

u/Whitey1225 14h ago

I thought this was talking about the dark spot in the white dude's hair (top right). I expected this to be a post about the racial bias in AI generated images.
