I think some of the tastebuds in this thread have become victims of nostalgia, their food has been bland and overcooked for years.

45

u/Captn_Insanso Oct 21 '24

Totally just nostalgia. It was a local comfort. That’s all. They were never amazing.

Man, I do love Papa's, but I don't love it enough to pay $40 for a pizza.

7

u/ScrattaBoard Oct 22 '24

That place is horrible these days

6

u/Halloween2022 Oct 22 '24

Please don't swear like that

8

u/CommodoreBelmont Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24

As far as I can recall, the main courses were pretty much always mediocre at best. At least as far back as the mid-90s.

The selling point was always the pie, which was always good and occasionally great. (Although I'm seeing comments down-thread that this changed post-pandemic.)

5

u/OffTopicBen95 Oct 22 '24

I miss the old Shari’s. This is a bummer. Reminds me of grandparents, this and Elmer’s were like the only places we could take them that they’d eat anything.

5

u/mads-in-progress Oct 22 '24

Yeah, but I know people who love bland and overcooked. For them I feel bad for.

4

u/Howling_Fang Oct 22 '24

There's a reason it remains fond in memory, but there is also a reason I haven't eaten there in quite a few years.

Not it can stay fond in memory.

1

u/Silenity Oct 22 '24

i went there the other day post pandemic and i would genuinely never, ever eat there again. it was so expensive and the food was so incredibly below average. i make breakfast at home now 90% of the time these days.

tho sharis would come in clutch as the late night hangover spot but this place sorely needs something better than sharis or mandys.

Midnight coffee for teenagers ….good times

22

u/onefst250r Oct 21 '24

Theyll have to slum it now...at Dennys.

Venture Capitalists strike again.

44

u/onefst250r Oct 21 '24

You misspelled vulture.

15

u/L_Ardman Oct 21 '24

Not very good ones as they lost a lot of money.

7

u/Kaexii Oct 22 '24

Isn't that the point? They pick up a business and vampirize it until it's nothing but a hollow shell.

The point isn't even to increase profit for the business you buy, it's just squeeze it for more than you paid for it?

5

u/ApplesBananasRhinoc Oct 22 '24

Squeeze it till it pops and dies, The American way!

1

u/L_Ardman Oct 22 '24

No, losing money is not the point. If they wanted to part it out they could have done it right away when it was more valuable. Slowing losing money until the brand dies and the parts are sold off in a fire sale was not the goal here.

My senior prom dinner was at the Shari's off river road. Had a lot of good memories with my grandma there, too. Sad to see them all close.

39

u/SandyOwl Oct 21 '24

That was sweet of you to take your grandma to prom 😉

20

u/Shot-Abroad2718 Oct 21 '24

LMAOO my grandma would have thrown down if I took her. Might have thrown out a hip too, but she'd be the life of the party.

10

u/Prestigious-Packrat Oct 21 '24

My kid has a lot of memories with their grandma at the River Rd one too. It was their thing.

7

u/Shot-Abroad2718 Oct 21 '24

Me and my grandma too. Also GJ's, she LOVED GJs. She died 10 years ago next Tuesday and I haven't been able to be back since.

u/DragonfruitTiny6021 Oct 21 '24

Had a few standard egg breakfasts years ago, but getting the emergency thanksgiving pie on my way home from work was an inlaw lifesaver for years.

24

u/Nonyabeez420 Oct 21 '24

I don’t know how half the restaurants stay open in town. Drive by at 5-6 pm and there’s never anyone inside most of them. We stopped eating out a year or so ago when inflation got bad, food prices have rose by over 30% since then.

6

u/conyej Oct 22 '24

I wonder this too, it's like a ghost town some nights.

4

u/Kaexii Oct 22 '24

Answer: astounding amounts of take out/delivery.

15

u/Guygenius138 Oct 21 '24

Good riddance to bad rubbish

5

u/Nogohoho Oct 22 '24

I think their rubbish issues were a symptom of their demise, and certainly didn't help their public standing either.

-6

u/wvmitchell51 Oct 21 '24

The phrase "good riddance to bad rubbish" is an idiom that means to be happy to get rid of something that is unwanted, worthless, or of poor quality. It originated in Shakespeare's 1609 play Troilus and Cressida.

15

u/mapwny Oct 21 '24

Thank you for the information! Do you know anything about the history of baked beans?

4

u/wvmitchell51 Oct 21 '24

The history of baked beans is complex and includes influences from Native Americans, English colonists, and Henry J. Heinz:

Native American origins

Baked beans originated with Native American tribes, who used indigenous beans, maple syrup, and bear fat. The beans were slow-cooked in earthenware or deer-skin pots over a fire.

English colonization

In the 17th century, English colonists in New England adopted and adapted the dish, using brown sugar instead of maple syrup.

Molasses

In the mid-18th century, molasses became a common ingredient in Boston baked beans. Molasses was shipped to Boston from the Caribbean to make rum, and was a way to avoid British taxes on sugar.

Henry J. Heinz

In 1886, Henry J. Heinz, the owner of the Heinz food company, brought tinned baked beans to London. In 1905, he began advertising baked beans as a pre-cooked meal, and they became popular in Britain.

Vegetarian baked beans

During World War II, baked beans became vegetarian due to meat rationing, and they have remained vegetarian ever since.

7

u/theforestwalker Oct 22 '24

Can you give me examples of times people invented things out of spite?

5

u/onefst250r Oct 22 '24

Ford vs. Ferrari: Henry Ford II decided to build the Ford GT to beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race after Ferrari backed out of a deal to be bought by Ford. This was a classic case of corporate spite leading to an iconic sports car.

3

u/theforestwalker Oct 22 '24

I had a question about this!

4

u/mapwny Oct 21 '24

Wow, that's interesting stuff! Can you write me a poem about upper lip sweat?

8

u/Givemeurhats Oct 22 '24

Sure! Here's a poem about upper lip sweat!

They go and they go,
Nutsack sweat, truffle butter,
They run down my face

9

u/mapwny Oct 22 '24

High art always brings a tear to my eye.

2

u/Halloween2022 Oct 22 '24

Only the phrase "good riddance" comes from Troilus and Cresida.

15

u/Sad_Nolte Oct 21 '24

The quality has definitely gone down the past couple of years. There was a customer in the local Shari's using one of those tennis racket bug zappers to kill flies posted on the local rants/raves. It was surreal.

13

u/nowlan_shane Oct 21 '24

I never went but those hexagon buildings always did stand out. What’s the interior decor like? I was just at Beergarden yesterday and saw the sign that they reclaimed a bunch of stuff from a Marie Callendar’s. Maybe someone else could do something similar with this?

6

u/daeglo Oct 22 '24

Some enterprising entrepreneur could purchase one of those "iconic" hexagon buildings, surely. And maybe even put a real restaurant in it.

I could totally see it as a nice Italian place.

3

u/hobbyhearse83 Oct 22 '24

People would need to appreciate flavorful Italian food before that's a good idea.

11

u/sandwichmaker1243 Oct 21 '24

As much as I enjoyed hanging there until the wee hours in highschool. Other than the pies the food sucked.

11

u/melinormayhem Oct 22 '24

In my teens up in Oregon City, Shari's was the only place to go after hours. Spent many a late night in there drinking truly awful coffee and trying to solve that "draw a single line through all five boxes" puzzle while flirting with the current favorite boy. That said, I can't say I ever went there because I craved anything on the menu. I'm not all that surprised they didn't survive the pandemic.

8

u/justacunninglinguist Oct 21 '24

The end of an era. Find memories of going to Sharis. There's still some in SW Washington. I wonder how long they'll stay open.

9

u/Budget-Ad-2198 Oct 22 '24

Elmers provides a similar vibe with better quality food 😊 but for nostalgia sake, sad to see them go.

1

u/REDDITmusiv Oct 22 '24

But Elmer's uses Canola oil in their kitchen. For folks with IBS, that can be a problem.

1

u/Budget-Ad-2198 Oct 23 '24

I think anyone who has digestive or allergy issues has to heed caution when eating out in general so Elmer’s isn’t a special case. I know plenty of people who have the above mentioned health issues and do their research before eating out so they can avoid discomfort or potentially a medical emergency. It’s hard to be all inclusive in the food business as peoples wants and needs have such a colossal range. It sounds like Elmers is not the restaurant for you. I’ve never had any issues and my loved ones haven’t either so I will keep going. It’s an Oregon-founded business and I’m all for that!

7

u/uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhnah Oct 22 '24

“Despite extensive and exhaustive efforts and hopes, still, for a different outcome…. “

Huh? 🧐

2

u/Nogohoho Oct 22 '24

"Our strategy of cutting as much as possible, including paying for trash pickup, didn't create a more desirable restaurant."

Guess you're gonna have to burn it to a crisp yourself now...

1

u/Nogohoho Oct 22 '24

You could scour other bathrooms for meat instead. Or download Grindr.

6

u/Grouchy-Age4859 Oct 22 '24

What’s the best local pie place now

2

u/Nogohoho Oct 22 '24

Best bet is probably Sweet Life, or Hideaway.

1

u/Negafig4ev Oct 22 '24

Second breakfast.

3

u/Huntay5 Oct 21 '24

I would always pick up a couple pies for holidays or a dinner party. After covid I noticed they shrunk in half, and quality suffered.

3

u/CommodoreBelmont Oct 22 '24

There were a few years where their pies helped me out with holiday plans. Mostly early on before I learned how to make my own, but also once or twice when I just didn't have the time. It's a niche service that isn't likely to be filled, I think.

Hadn't been back post-covid, so I'm sorry to learn that the pie had degraded in quality. That was always their main virtue.

2

u/Randvek Oct 21 '24

Their avocado eggs Benedict was legitimately one of my favorite breakfasts in town. I will miss it.

4

u/galactabat Oct 21 '24

Didn't go there often, but oddly went there the morning of my wedding with my family, so it always held a bit of a soft-spot for me.

3

u/lollipop_king Oct 21 '24

One of my favorite places as a kid... having to watch their slow decline has been pretty heartbreaking. Hopefully something better can take their place.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '24

We all saw this coming!

3

u/BringBackWaffleTaco Oct 22 '24

I met my wife at a Shari's, this actually makes me very sad 😔

1

u/Responsible-Pay-4763 Nov 02 '24

My husband proposed to me in the bar at G Willikers on Coburg Rd. It was sad to see them tear it down.

2

u/jwaters1978 Oct 21 '24

Sad news. Curious…are the ones in WA, ID an CA staying open??

2

u/morosco Oct 22 '24

The one in Boise closed a while ago, there are still two just outside Boise that are hanging on, for now.

2

u/Wide-Obligation-5668 Oct 21 '24

Awh man, sweet memories of being ridiculously blazed while trying to play it cool and eat below-average food.

2

u/DantesInfernalracket Oct 22 '24

Did nobody proofread this thing? That first sentence is a mess

1

u/CommodoreBelmont Oct 22 '24

Copy editors cost money.

2

u/CupsShouldBeDurable Oct 22 '24

That's a shame, I've got fond memories there.

I went to high school at Churchill, graduated in '16. Me and my buddies learned that you could get in and out of Shari's with an apple pie in less than a minute, so we'd frequently run there during lunch, buy a $10 apple pie, and eat it sitting on the trunk of my Ford Taurus.

Pie isn't cheap there anymore, and the food always sucked. But I'll miss it.

2

u/tacoflavoredballsack Oct 22 '24

Gotta love it when they give you three days frickin notice.

1

u/adiofan88 Oct 21 '24

Damn that sucks. They have gone down hill since Covid.

1

u/thatonestrangekid Oct 22 '24

Petition for In n Out to take its spot 😂 so upset chick fil a took that spot.

1

u/DrPatchet Oct 22 '24

I used to get drunk in highschool and get their pie shakes at 3am.. gone but not forgotten

1

u/PiratexelA Oct 22 '24

What's a good idea for a hexagonal building space?

1

u/PsychologyDazzling59 Oct 22 '24

I used to go there with my parents when I was little all the time :) - 2003 kid

1

u/HelpfulRoyal Oct 22 '24

Wow, better get those expense reports in, only three days to do so including the day the letter went out.

1

u/DeltaUltra Oct 22 '24

I wonder when the properties are going up for sale and how much they are going to be.

1

u/Tbelles Oct 22 '24

Only diner-style restaurant I've ever been to that managed to consistently fuck up eggs.
Glad to see it gone.

1

u/Shwifty_Plumbus Oct 22 '24

Awe man, I was about to take my whole family there like an asshole.

About damn time. Terrible food at ridiculous pricing. Good riddance.

1

u/ApplesBananasRhinoc Oct 22 '24

So glad I decided not to go there a few days ago.

1

u/shlammysammy Oct 22 '24

I went there just for pie a few weeks back and the pie shelves were completely empty. I left expecting this at some point.

1

u/DKFran7 Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24

My daughter and I delivered newspapers years ago. We'd go to the Shari's at Pioneer Parkway roughly every other Sunday after we were done. Around 7:30am. Food was tasty then, a lot of it, and most of the tables were full.

The first change I noticed was the stuffed hashbrowns weren't so stuffed anymore. Other changes happened. The loss of a pie slice for your birthday, and the loss of the senior discount? That's when I knew Shari's had given up.

1

u/Negafig4ev Oct 22 '24

Another victim of private equity firms.

1

u/trchlyf Oct 22 '24

Yyyyeeeeeaaaahhhhh!!!! Maybe something with EDIBLE food will pop up in those locations! Anyone keeping those places open should be ashamed of themselves.

1

u/cantbeseriouschef Oct 22 '24

Elmer's will be next

1

u/Responsible-Pay-4763 Nov 02 '24

We used to go to the one on River Rd. but it's really gone downhill lately, so I wasn't surprised to hear they closed. I'll miss the waitresses because they were always so nice.

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '24 edited Oct 21 '24

Ceeee la brate good times, come on'

We goin have a celebration tonight!

0

u/clarkiiclarkii Oct 22 '24

Nobody was thinking they were putting out good food, right? I do DoorDash and every time I would pick up food from that restaurant there would always be sketchy ass people right by the door and the employees wouldn’t do anything about it.

-2

u/Stalactite_Seattlite Oct 21 '24

I was done with Shari's before the pandemic. Place sucked unless you're one of those braindead bland heads who think biscuits and gravy are worth dining out for.

-1

u/FranelopeS Oct 22 '24

What a great way to describe these people lol

-3

u/ChipOnASquid Oct 22 '24

I've lived here for 4 years and I'm still scared to walk into one.
