I wish I liked eggnog, but it just taste like creamy cinnamon bubblegum to me :(

u/FunkMastaJunk Oct 15 '24

Umpqua’s eggnog is pretty mild but yeh it def doesn’t seem to be everyone’s thing.

It’s pretty good as a milk substitute in a cappuccino as well and some of the shacks around here will do that for you.

I've never liked it much either, because of that funky bubblegummy taste! At least in the store bought stuff, homemade is fine though I still don't love how thick it is. Everyone thinks I'm nuts.

If you're talking alcoholic nog, Jeffrey Morgenthaler from up in Portland has a famous nog recipe that's thinner, more sessionable, and arguably more delicious: https://jeffreymorgenthaler.com/clyde-common-egg-nog/

The ingredients might sound funky, but give it a chance - somehow tequila, sherry, and eggs work incredibly well.

I love me some egg nog, and while I haven't really found any around here that compares to what's available in the upper mid-west (I miss Oberweis and C.F. Burger), Lochmead's egg nog is pretty good. I do like my egg nog to be thick. I want to feel like I should maybe chew it a little bit before swallowing.

I like it mixed with 50 percent milk. Straight is like bubblegum syrup

Every eggnog fanatic should try the Golden Eggnog by Hood. It’s robust.

4

u/RigRoss Oct 15 '24

Where would one find such a beverage that has the qualifying nomenclature?

6

u/serpentine1337 Oct 16 '24

Definitely in New England.

4

u/kiwijuno Oct 16 '24

I think I saw that at Winco this weekend?

u/Rune_nic Oct 16 '24

It's just so hard to beat Darigold though!

13

u/Wot106 Oct 15 '24

I like to add it to my cold brew.

u/hOwcanihelpy0u Oct 15 '24

i’ve already finished my first half gal from fred meyers✨

u/Antonolmiss Oct 16 '24

Ya gotta pump those numbers up…

u/BLHero Oct 16 '24

Great instead of creamer with black tea or coffee.

1

u/Suzy196658 Oct 17 '24

Oooh in black tea sounds AMAZING 😻

2

u/BLHero Oct 21 '24

It is quite nice. I actually like it best in hoji-cha (which I buy at Sunrise Market).

1

u/Suzy196658 Oct 22 '24

Thank you! This is the best advice!! Can’t wait to try 🧡🤎💛

I like one (1) sip of egg nog every now and then, but my husband will drink as much as I can keep in the fridge. I'll go get him some tomorrow, thanks

WHOEVER IS ANTI-EGGNOG PROBABLY ALSO THINKS CILANTRO TASTES LIKE SOAP

4

u/trxmas Oct 16 '24

Everything tastes better with cilantro!

3

u/GalGaia Oct 17 '24

Me: loves eggnog and thinks cilantro tastes like soap.

2

u/DKFran7 Oct 18 '24

Here here! Same: Eggnog is terrific, and cilantro is terrible.

1

u/anecdotalgardener Oct 17 '24

This is most unfortunate 😢

2

u/Wot106 Oct 16 '24

Truth!

1

u/Flexishaft Oct 16 '24

Cilantro tastes just like Chinese parsley.

6

u/AlternativeNo4919 Oct 16 '24

Dari Mart charges like $9 for a pint of Ben and Jerry's and other outrageous prices

Ain't no fkn way I'm buying anything from there ever when I can just drive to Winco or whatever and get it for 25% the price

6

u/Wot106 Oct 16 '24

Why are you buying Vermont ice cream in Oregon? Lochmead ice cream is superior anyway. Heathen. Your Eugene card is now revoked. No more cheap canabis for you. Or OCF passes.

6

u/AlternativeNo4919 Oct 16 '24

Lochmead is cheap ass dog dirt bro. I want them damn toppings. Oregon ain't exactly known for it's dairy like Vermont. And I don't smoke anyways but I've lived here since birth for 30+ years and you ain't revoking shiiiiiiiet Felicia. I'm the one who gives out the passes, poseur!

1

u/Wot106 Oct 16 '24

Bah! I remember the Toilet Bowl (bearly). I out geriatric you.

flashes wristband passive aggressively

4

u/Refuge-Seeker Oct 15 '24

Also Winco. Got some there in early September

4

u/TwoGirlsOneFungi Oct 15 '24

Appreciate you, homie. <3

4

u/Canislupusjp Oct 16 '24

Egg Nog reminds me of Candy Corn. You buy it and try a bit, then never touch the rest.

3

u/krymz1n Oct 16 '24

You gotta try the Alexander Farms egg nog

3

u/HunterWesley Oct 16 '24

As someone who cares about workers' rights, I don't shop at Dari Mart.

2

u/Rizzie_01 Oct 16 '24

Care to elaborate? I've heard that they are not the best to their employees but I don't have any personal experience.

2

u/chronicMeme Oct 16 '24

Low pay, inconsistent hours, favoritism with distribution of hours, many part time positions so they don't have to provide full time benefits... The list goes on, and that's just the store I work at.

1

u/HunterWesley Oct 17 '24

Well I could tell stories, but management has a really bad attitude with employees. One woman I work with was fired when she got pregnant. I was fired when my schedule changed and I didn't come in on time that day. The district manager's boss (who did not identify herself) came in for some special treatment and I didn't give it to her, and he showed up to bitch about "how I talked to his wife." Another guy who worked the night shift was fired when he disclosed that he had a gun to protect himself. I never saw it, nice guy, but he told the wrong person.

They were always trying to run the store with one person. Not that I cared, but it was a lot of stuff to do for one person. They asked for 110% and paid 60%.

Once I was going on a short trip and needed a shift covered. I wasn't going to see the manager for a while (night shift) and no one at our store could do it, so I called other stores to see if someone wanted the shift. I found someone and did the manager's job for him. Well that certainly made shit fly at HQ. They were pissed at me...they refused to train me... some managers were good, others treated you like a wet rag.

u/Loaatao Oct 16 '24

I like to throw it in a shaker with some ice cubes And fireball or any spiced liquor

3

u/No_Safety9084 Oct 16 '24

The Lactaid Egg Nog is really good, I recommend it 🫶🏽

1

u/trxmas Oct 16 '24

Unfortunately, whatever is in cow's milk that makes my body react very negatively is replicated with Lactaid. 😬

3

u/debidousagi Oct 16 '24

I can't wait to visit friends and family in Eugene this holiday season and drink my fill haha!

3

u/trxmas Oct 16 '24

I wish there were an actual EGG eggnog that didn't have cow's milk. Oat Nog is okay, but the egg really makes a difference. Might have to just try my hand at crafting some at home.

2

u/yo_qq_bb Oct 15 '24

Get invited to Ye Olde Riverbend ED crimmus party for the best.

2

u/spfld_dad Oct 16 '24

My go to is southern comfort eggnog both, the traditional and vanilla spice!

2

u/TheRealAerosynth Oct 17 '24

1 part dark rum and 2 or 3 parts eggnog. It's wonderful.

1

u/TwistedDuckPub Oct 17 '24

I got some at Chef store last month. Love that stuff

1

u/jarlybartski Oct 18 '24

It's in my coffee every morning now! :-)

Legit I feel like it came out as soon as pumpkin spice did

0

u/Birds_arent_real444 Oct 16 '24

I need the egg nog milkshake to come back to mc Donald's. 😔

-1

u/Minimum-Act6859 Oct 15 '24

Better than Pumpkin Spice ! Thanks for the warning ⚠️

-2

u/sillygreenfaery Oct 15 '24

I have never enjoyed any sip of egg-nog based solely on the name. I don't really like the thought of drinking eggs lol I dare you to find a ickier name for a drink

11

u/RigRoss Oct 15 '24

Gooey Throat Slider

3

u/sillygreenfaery Oct 16 '24

Oh nooooooo 🤢 you just described a prairie oyster. I wish I could forget that gulp

-6

u/FullmetalHippie Oct 15 '24

Egg nog is good and all, but the animals that are responsible for creating the ingredients live short and tortured lives. You can be sure that the eggs that are used in commercial eggnog production come from some of the most abused animals on the planet.

Consider an animal-free alternative this holiday season.

u/Mt-Man-PNW Oct 16 '24 edited Oct 16 '24

For what it's worth; Lochmead Farms, who makes the Dari Mart Egg Nog, has free range dairy cows. Not sure where they get their eggs specifically but I know they source locally.

2

u/FullmetalHippie Oct 16 '24 edited Oct 16 '24

Unfortunately this doesn't really mean anything. Almost all dairy cows qualify as free range. One only needs pasture access a few hours a day for 6 months of the year to qualify, and it doesn't make a lot of economic sense to keep a dairy cow in continuous confinement if you are planning on using the animal until her reproductive system slows down.

The issues facing dairy cows are much more to do with being kept in a constant state of pregnancy, developing painful mastitis on their udders, being separated from their offspring, and the brutal treatment and infant deaths of males.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '24

They separate the calves from the mother at birth. That is torture for any animal. She has birth after birth, loss after loss. The calves that aren't slaughtered live in tiny sheds like dog houses, alone. And I once saw, at my horse's stable near Bend, two cows shot in a pasture and their bodies winched into the butcher's truck. The other cows ran in circles around the bodies, mooing. I stopped eating meat that day and have never missed it. I also worked at chicken farms in Pleasant Hill, "chicken picking" or grabbing the chickens by a leg, handing them to loaders who slammed them into cages on a truck. Plant based chicken and veggies burgers for me.

Just saying this sentiment to want good treatment of animals comes from a good place but in this case the "free range" label is there to placate people, not be a good indicator that animals are being treated well.

6

u/britrees Oct 16 '24

The SoDelicious Holiday Nog is pretty good!

2

u/Loaatao Oct 16 '24

Planet Oat makes a great oat milk egg nog

3

u/Wot106 Oct 16 '24

You are why people hate vegans.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '24

You can hate them, doesn't mean they're wrong.

1

u/FullmetalHippie Oct 16 '24

You are directly calling for the continued use and abuse of intelligent and sentient animals for your optional taste pleasure.

If ever there was an appropriate place for a mild and non-forceful suggestion to make use of the many alternatives, it's places like this.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '24

Eugene thinks of itself as so enlightened and so close to nature, blah blah blah yet still thinks they have to eat animals for protein. Keto fans, that cow muscle you eat for protein, what does a cow eat to produce all that lean protein muscle? Grass.

Everyone should watch Dominion
