What's a business idea you would LOVE to see open in town? Something we don't have here that would be so popular! Something to do
I'll go first!!! Something for people to do to "hang out" who don't go to bars and drink, but still wanna be adults and have fun! There's only bowling lol..

SO THIS. When they took the reservoir at College Hill down, we lost one of the only places left to skate in groups.

Along the lines of a “hang out” place, I would love another coffee/tea place that stays open late. Maybe some board games but in general, just a nice place to get an after dinner warm drink

u/ShadowFalcon1 Sep 27 '24
These are called 3rd places. Sadly there’s not a lot in America at all

There was one in my neighborhood in Seattle (when I lived there), and it was actually called Third Place!! It was (still is) a lovely bookstore / cafe / coffee place. For a while it also had a pub downstairs, I think.

u/Western-Term-8209 Sep 28 '24
Books With Pictures here. We’re currently only open until 7 most nights because it’s a vicious cycle—when we’ve tried being open later there’s just not enough sales to cover staff wages. But! We love to welcome folks just coming in and hanging out any time 🙂
We’re also brainstorming some social-mixer type events for fall!
24
u/Odd-Position6128 Sep 27 '24
100% yes this. I remember before the pandemic when Townsends would stay open until 10pm. And that Kava bar that was open as late as the alcohol bars. They were my preferred spots for dates.

This! I spent my teens and early 20s hanging out at Allan Bros on Olive. Used to be open till 11 so you could grab a coffee or tea and hang with friends in a chill environment. It was so nice to see people knitting in groups, playing board games. Just actually interacting and being low key.

Hey this is us! Primarily we will be a bookstore (with a taproom tucked in there). The vision is for sure cozy-- ultimate coziness, we're trying. While we will focus on beer/wine we will not be a 'bar-'bar' atmosphere and heck yar we will have hot tea, one dedicated N/A tap, and one mocktail to begin with until we can expand that side.

u/ibimus9 Sep 27 '24
I wonder if you could somehow partner with High Street Tonics (a fully NA bar) for some fun things!

I want a cheap, second run movie theater. Eugene does ok for its size with multiplex and art house theaters, but it'd be nice to have a cheap second run one with halfway decent food and beverages.
31
10
u/thrownalee Sep 27 '24
I think second-run cinema is kind of a dying niche with streaming and 4K video out there. Something McMenamin's-ish could work.

A dog park that requires memberships, so dogs/humans that are misbehaved can be kicked out and the rest of us can let our dogs play in peace. I have heard of this in other areas and it sounds nice. You'd be able to screen for vaccines too, but it wouldn't be as pricey as a dog daycare since you'd be watching your dog yourself.
17
u/letsmakeafriendship Sep 27 '24
I would enjoy the result of my reddit feed having less rants about the dog park, that's for sure.

In all honesty, Elegant Elephant isn’t really that good. They were a go-to when it was harder to find gluten free baked goods, and a lot of people still turn to them because they are well known, but the craft of gluten free baking has made huge improvements and EE really hasn’t kept up. Not that they don’t have items you won’t enjoy, but if you look at the local farmers markets and such, it won’t take you long to find better (such as Estelle, which someone else already mentioned). Source: I have been gluten free for nearly 20 years now.

There used to be an abundance of places like this in Eugene - in fact, their almost complete disappearance was one of the first things I noticed when I moved back after more than a decade's absence.
In the 90s there was Cafe Paradiso downtown, the marketplace at 16th and Willamette, the courtyard at the Fifth Street Market and Allan Brothers. In the 80s the McMenamins on High Street was a coffee place, and there were numerous places around campus where you could sit and study or meet friends over a cup of coffee and a snack.
Now, what places haven't been torn down have been converted to restaurants/bars/brewpubs - places where they need to turn tables to pay exorbitant commercial rents to the equity bros that took over the buildings. So many of the businesses I mentioned above were the bread and butter of my life here in Eugene when I was young. I've no idea where underage kids go any more.
It's a shame. So many of these venues were neighbourhood gathering hubs where you could meet, run into, and even make, new friends. Mind you (and I know that I'm at the risk of sounding like a Luddite here, but I honestly don't care) before the advent of wifi and smartphones you actually had to rely on analogue sources of work/study/entertainment (books, textbooks, notebooks, files, etc) and others could see what you were consuming/working on. It sparked the occasional conversation (and, admittedly, some irritating pickup attempts), as well as the odd bit of advice or commiseration. Also, there was something about non-screen-based text that was a lot less addictive and fostered the ability to "come up for air" fairly regularly: i.e., actually looking up and seeing the people around you for a change every now and then. Even portable audio devices were considered antisocial in those contexts - as why would you go out in public to sit in a bubble when you could sit at home and listen to your own music and shut people out entirely?
Sorry: this has turned into another screed about what has gone wrong with Eugene.
- rant mode off

We have metaphysical stores but none dedicated exclusively to witchcraft and paganism. Metaphysical stores are geared more towards the yoga-mat-toting, reiki-healing set. Bree's Way has some pagan stuff but half the store is dedicated to hippie clothing.
I'd personally love to also see a botánica go up - the closest one is in Portland and I've had a few people ask me about if there's one in Eugene.

An actually upscale fitness center with sauna, steam room and a salt water pool (where kids aren’t allowed). Denver has one downtown that I just covet and wish we had one here. Hell, Omaha has gyms that puts ours to shame.

I'd take any business that compliments another successful business. There's a real problem in this town of copycats. They multiply like rabbits. Second the late night cafe. So much need for that!
A kid’s clothing store. Crazy that there isn’t one.
Waterfront dining.
I think an antique store would do great. There has been nothing since Oregon Antiques Mall burned down and M&K closed. The ones in Springfield are meh. The Coburg Antiques Mall closed its main building. Only decent antiquing is in Albany.
Downtown doesn’t have much for visitors to do when it isn’t Saturday Market. A signature thing, like Albany’s carrousel or Central Park’s buggy rides. I think a close-in stables that offered horse rides, like up Skinner’s butte and along the river, would be a big attraction. Or a petting farm . There are so many hobby farms around but nowhere more central to be with animals. That would be great for kids, out of town visitors, or dates.
As a New York Jew, I don’t understand everyone listing a kosher (style) deli, unless they mean an actual kosher deli for which there is not much need here. Not many people keep kosher here . As for kosher style food, we have it totally covered with Barry’s and Lox, Stocks and Barrel. They are both so good . And authentic. I feel so lucky. What more could you want? I mean, maybe blintzes and pierogies? But I am happy with excellent challah, an amazing turkey sandwich, fantastic bagels, perfect matzo ball soup and a real-deal NYC black and white cookie.
I would love a middle eastern deli, like at Barbur World Foods in Portland. Somewhere with a decent lahmacun or pide. I would also love a Persian or a Turkish restaurant, or a Middle Eastern joint other than Shalosh (which is great but limited menu-wise), like Kasbah Moroccan Cafe in Portland. A Turkish breakfast place would do really well. Also high quality sushi now that Taro isn’t doing it anymore! And Masa needs a successor.
