Visited Eastern Oregon for the First Time

And I loved it. I found it very beautiful. I travelled from Pendleton through to the Wallowas over to Hells Canyon then up into the Elkhorn Mountains and then, finally, into Burns/Steens Mountain area. Just wanted to say you guys live in amazing country. Such a diversity of landscape. I lived in Wyoming once upon a time and found this area similar and it made me even nostalgic for my Wyoming town. I particularly enjoyed the Baker City/Elkhorn area. Already planning my next trip back! More hiking less driving! Any suggestions?

Since you liked the Elkhorn Mountains, here are a couple of interactive panoramas you might want to see:

Olive Lake outside Granite is worth the drive. As is Anthony Lake. Balm Creek is a great hike if you're prepared for bears.

Granite is a neat tiny town. But just drive up the road from Granite for a ways (the road sucks, it's washboard) and you'll get to Olive Lake. You can camp there. The water is crystal clear and deep. The ground squirrels are human friendly so don't be shocked if you end up with one on your lap.

How was the snow? Trail was clear and passable?

If hiking is what you’re into there’s a ton of great stuff!! I’ve been here a couple years now and try to keep trying new places. I would feel comfortable saying pick any place on the map and go!! The Wallowa Whitman National Forest has an incredible diversity of scenery and ecosystems! Feel free to PM any specific questions.

Just don’t tell your friends, eh?

There was some snow patches (easily passable) by Summit Lake. I assume it will be melted out within a couple weeks. Mosquitoes were surprisingly only bad at the trailhead at Anthony Lake for the first maybe 3 miles. And will do! I stopped at Wallowa Lake TH but it was so crowded. Trying to go to more obscure spots. Thanks! And mums the word about this place :)

I doubt he's looking to get mounted by a gentlemen with tuberculosis. Haven't the good people of the Oregon subreddits been trolled enough for one day?
