Yeah, this shit only really works on NA/JP bricks, due to only having two prongs, but still, brick designs like this are annoying as fuck, no matter what region. I'm an American, and the bricks literally block two or more fucking outlets, especially on a power strip.

306

u/FuzzelFox 13d ago

And they've existed/pissed us off for decades. Why can't they just put the brick in-line and not at the very end that plugs in??

84

u/Aggressive-Brick1024 13d ago

Good question. The only time I can think of when Nintendo didn't do that for something semi-portable is the Wii U gamepad. That had an in-line charger. Every other in-line power brick is for their home systems, as early as the GameCube (N64 if putting it directly into a slot in the console itself counts.) The direct plug-in style was brought back for home systems with the switch, technically, but before that, the NES and SNES are the only home consoles to use direct plug-in bricks.

16

u/rebels-rage 13d ago

I think the 64 counts

9

u/YertlesTurtleTower 13d ago

The Wii, Wii U, and the Wii U gamepad were all inline chargers

7

u/moocat90 13d ago

and the NES on was just a transformer (input voltage to 9 volt) so you can just use any other 9V brick because the AC to DC happened in the console

1

u/ILikeTrains1404 11d ago

Same with the super NES

11

u/ivancea 13d ago

They're better for when you're playing while charging, as the block's weight isn't pulling from the cord. For when you're charging them, it requires you somewhere to put the block on.

I'm from Spain, we use schuko plugs, which are reversible, so I rarely had a problem with them

15

u/ElusiveGuy 13d ago

Making the cord longer would solve that, no?

Really the way laptop chargers do it is best. Standard IEC cable from wall to adapter, then a long cable from adapter to laptop/device.

5

u/ivancea 13d ago

Then you're fighting with a long cord and a messy block around the floor (or wherever) like with laptops.

It will work for some for sure, and I don't think any of the ways is a perfect solution. Just sitting my POV over why I usually prefer in-plug blocks

10

u/ElusiveGuy 13d ago

Long cords can be bundled up a bit though. Too-short cords leave you with no easy way out (apart from an extension on the AC side).

But yea there won't be a true one size fits all for all homes/layouts.

1

u/LotusTileMaster 12d ago

Then they would have to spend a couple more cents on a longer cord.

1

u/ILikeTrains1404 11d ago

The true solution is to stop make obnoxiously sized bricks.

1

u/ElusiveGuy 11d ago

Eh, it needs to be big enough to fit the electronics inside. Can't beat physics.

10

u/fluteofski- 13d ago

Cost.

Plug-cord-brick-cord is more expensive to manufacture than brick(with prongs)-cord. And it’s a component that doesn’t affect the consumer buying decisions. (My former career was in supply chain)

3

u/Leoxcr 12d ago

Those fuckers, I hate that this is the reason.

4

u/fluteofski- 12d ago

Ehh. This one is Not worth the frustration. At the end of the day all costs get passed down to the consumer. So if they’re adding a feature, you’re paying for it.

This one can simply be mitigated by a power strip, which most of us have behind our tv anyways.

It’s actually a really really interesting balancing the user needs vs cost measures. My current career is industrial design (basically mechanical design) is all about this and we have to think about how if we add a feature 1) does it add value? 2) does it add more value than what the feature costs.

Now in OP’s case, the plug could have just been designed better at no extra cost. That part is shitty design.

1

u/GrandmaPoses Reddit Orange 13d ago

I’ve used plugs like that and I hate them for two reasons - they stick out so far it’s impossible to put furniture in front of them, and the weight at the end of the longer block causes them to slowly unplug themselves.

-18

u/WingsNut311 13d ago

I can tell you exactly why. Planned Obsolescence. Those are the cheapest type of powersupply/cables they can use. Notice the thickness of the cable. These types of power supplies allow them to use much smaller wire since the voltage has already been adapted at the plug. That not only saves them money on wire but also they break MUCH easier, requiring the user to get another one. That being said, they could still use a different housing for that plug. One that doesnt block other outlets.

16

u/SpruesClues 13d ago

what do you mean, planned obsolescence? I still charge my DS with my original SP charger from 20 odd years ago

what are they trying to do, force me to buy a DS Lite?

2

u/MarshyHope 13d ago

They changed the charger for the 3DS though which was annoying

4

u/SpruesClues 13d ago

At least they kept it for all versions of the 3/2DS though, as far as I know.

Off the top of my head, these are the groups of chargers:

  • GBA SP and OG DS
  • DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL
  • 3DS onward

Ech. Annoying, ain't it?

3

u/SnooAvocados763 12d ago

Correction: the DSi uses the same charger as the 3DS

1

u/SpruesClues 12d ago

Tbh I never had a DSi myself and did not fact check before posting. Thanks!

-10

u/WingsNut311 13d ago edited 13d ago

No they are hoping they sell more chargers. No where did I say you will HAVE to. This just makes it more likely that people MAY need to replace at some point. I garauntee you they sold more of these replacement chargers than they would have with a slightly better, durable charger. Pretty simple concept no one seems to get.

5

u/SpruesClues 13d ago

I disagree with "bad quality" being the primary element of "planned obsolescence".

I also disagree with it being bad quality. I've never seen one of these break. But that's gonna be a down to a few things, including environmental (humidity, temps, etc) and how careful you were.

The bigger and more obvious sign for planned obsolescence in the Nintendo ecosystem is how frequently they changed formats for both game media and connectivity.

10

u/Crafacek 13d ago

The European 3DS charger also has only 2 prongs. It takes only like 4W, so it doesn't need ground

So you can put it both ways

9

u/okarox 13d ago

The power is in no way related to the need for ground. It is whether it is double insulated.

2

u/TheArmoredKitten 13d ago

Its significantly more common for small power transformers to be double isolated as you say though. Large transformers tend to be autotransformers for size and cost reasoning, hence needing grounding.

5

u/Frooonti 13d ago

The 3DS charger is basically just a dumb USB charger with a proprietary plug. There is no reason why it's so massive in any region.

5

u/Tactical_Moonstone 13d ago

You can just buy a USB to 3DS cable to charge your 3DS and it will work fine.

I bought a bag of 10 cables and it has been my mainstay method for charging my 3DS.

4

u/Frooonti 13d ago

I soldered a USB-C port onto mine. No need to deal with adapters whatsoever.

3

u/Jacktheforkie 13d ago

I’m in the uk and some block 3, it’s so annoying, like put it in the middle of the cord

3

u/fuddlesworth 11d ago

Apple is the worst offender. It's so huge it barely stays in the outlet.

3

u/Aggressive-Brick1024 11d ago

Thank god I'm not an Apple user

2

u/okarox 13d ago

Everyone has two prongs, only Britain has three as the plastic ground prong is needed to open the socket.

1

u/randompotatopie_ *insert among us joke here* 12d ago

I’m also American and I’m confused as to what you mean. Sure it’s a decently large block but it only takes up one outlet on my power strips. And if it’s in a wall outlet you can just put it on the bottom.

0

u/Acecakewolf 13d ago

Ugh I just got a new monitor (US) and it had an end like this. Problem is so does my adjustable desk. I had to rearrange everything in the power strip so my monitor could block two spots and even then the end is at an awkward angle. 🙄 I can't plug either directly into the wall because the other socket has a space heater in it and that seems like a bad idea to split. Thank goodness my computer charger doesn't have a brick on the end too. Thankfully the splitter where my switch is plugged in has each side go a different direction so nothing can block each other. But what an annoying way to get around that.

427

u/CantaloupeCamper I like gradients! 13d ago

Wall bricks suck in every region.

82

u/Forbizzle 13d ago

i think they're intentionally trying to obstruct other outlets

39

u/Coyote_42 13d ago

Given that PSP cords have normal plugs, I agree. No reason to have the huge bricks now.

26

u/Jeggu2 13d ago

Or not have them directly connected to the plug.like seriously, give it an inch of breathing room and it'd be fine

39

u/Left-oven47 13d ago

Except the UK, I've never had a wall brick block another socket here

39

u/stopg1b 13d ago

The superiority of the UK plug makes me feel patriotic. Everything else feels so flawed 😆

3

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

Why do you think it's superior to, for example, the European Schucko?

12

u/Biscuit642 13d ago

Even the more robust ones in Europe feel a bit wobbly, and it's probably a pain for manufacturers with the whole plug needing to get inside that quite small hole. This might just be a muscle memory problem but lining everything up to get it to go in is more faff than the nice chunky prongs at home, and I really like having a switch on every socket. Not that you need it, its just nice to have.

3

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

Well, contemporary plugs are definitely not wobbly, it's a snug fit.

8

u/okarox 13d ago

Yes, because the sockets are huge.

20

u/GondorfTheG 13d ago

Safety is king 👑

2

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

I'm curious, why is the UK plug in any way safer than for example Schucko, the mainland plug?

17

u/GondorfTheG 13d ago

There are many reasons, I'll turn you over to national treasure Tom Scott for a better explanation than I could give you:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UEfP1OKKz_Q

4

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

I was thinking of that. The only thing the UK plug has that the Schucko does not is a fuse. And since we do radials, the fuse is completely unnecessary. So the UK plug is phenomenal - in the UK - nowhere else.

12

u/gamas 13d ago

Okay but can you use a Schucko was an impromptu weapon in an emergency?

A British version of Home Alone would have the kid put up turned British plugs all over the place.

10

u/Bimblelina 13d ago

Standing on a British plug makes standing on LEGO feel like a foot spa in comparison.

1

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

True that, the Schucko is definitely subpar as a weapon 😢

6

u/MyApologies_ 13d ago

And switches on the plug itself. In my experience I've not found any EU sockets that have the switch on the socket as well.

4

u/metric_kingdom 13d ago

In all honesty, how often do you use that switch? There are available of course, I just never had anyone asking for them.

3

u/anotherNarom 12d ago

All the time.

May leave hair dryer or straighteners plugged in, but just turn the switch off.

I don't leave phone chargers turned on, always turn the switch off. Same with toasters, kettle or hob.

Wow, in the US I've seen tons from all kinds of random things >_<

3

u/kickformoney 13d ago

I just cut a ton of rubber off of the sides of two Brazilian cords last night, so that I could fit them in a power strip. It was just rubber, no fuses, or anything, just extra rubber to get in the way.

2

0

u/Kalkin93 13d ago

In the UK we also call them extension cords, you could use your extension cord during your power strip ;)

5

u/flamerheart #FF00FF 13d ago

Nah, an extension cord and power board/power strip are different
Extension cords are cords that extend the length available for something
A power board/power strip is something you plug in to the wall (or an extension cord!) that has more plugs on it.

there are plenty of devices where the power plug is large for whatever reason, you just have to live with it.

8

u/LanaDelHeeey 13d ago

How would that not still block ports, just the ports on the strip instead?

1

u/sleepyzane1 13d ago

these often still block the next outlet over on a power strip

15

u/Automatic_Actuator_0 13d ago

Very short extension cords (<30cm) are nice for these issues

3

u/guska 13d ago

I once made up a bunch of extensions for exactly this, they had about 30mm of cord between the plugs, just enough to let them flex a bit.

The UK version of Nintendo's adapters are facing straight down so they don't block other sockets. I wonder why they made that change

6

u/Siguard_ 13d ago

I had an issue like that. However my adapter could be taken apart. I saw the corner of my specific one I could file a a chunk of it down without breaking through.

2

u/aoalvo Comic Sans for life! 13d ago

Stupid question but, can't you just buy a tiny extension cord for the devices that have this issue ? Just make it a "permanent" part of the adapter.

It's a non 0 dollars solution to a problem that shouldn't be a thing, but still.

3

u/EmperorJake 13d ago

Easy, just use a disc sander to narrow it down a bit

3

u/rando358 13d ago

3

u/gtek_engineer66 13d ago

2

u/TheCopyKater 13d ago

Your frustration is warranted, but it's worth noting that you're under no obligation to uphold the integrity of the charger as Nintendo Nintended. Just grab a file and shave off the overlapping plastic. So long as you don't mess with the electronics inside, the charger should function just fine.

2

u/Muddauberer 12d ago

This is not just an Australian problem. All bricks should be in line like the Wii and the Wii U.

2

u/_me_dumb 12d ago

I recently bought a power strip with rotatable plugs. Absolute game changer

2

u/jettsona 12d ago

You know those power point extender things that have like a double outlet on it? I use one of those to add extra height for annoying wall bricks. Use it for this and I have one for my stupid ring camera chime

1

u/blackmilksociety 13d ago

I have 1 foot extension cords for wall worts

1

u/dirtyhairymess 13d ago

You can get wider outlets for like $10 at Hammerbarn.

1

u/lolschrauber 13d ago

Honestly I just use cheap third party USB cables and a regular charger.

1

u/LanaDelHeeey 13d ago

This is every brick I own that isn’t just a regular usb

1

u/Egg-MacGuffin 13d ago

In the US I had to get a mini power strip to plug into my main power strip just to elevate it vertically so I could plug in my 3ds.

This also made me wonder if non-US plugs ever have fold-out prongs? Would be harder to do with 3 instead of 2.

1

u/Tactical_Moonstone 13d ago

Plugs using the British style can be made into a folding style by making the electric pins fold up while the ground pin folds down. This is pretty easy for this style because the pins are rectangular and are not angled.

I have seen the ungrounded European plugs appear in push-out and fold-out style as well.

1

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 13d ago

I found some mini 4 inch extension cords that solve all my problems with wall warts. They also have a pass through plug as well so you get double the outlets.

1

u/Kitten-Pisser 13d ago

Just get 3 10 gauge wires and plug those into the plug. Then solder/tape them to the prongs of the brick.

1

u/bionicjoey 13d ago

I remember the only time in my life I've ever been shocked touching mains power was trying to unplug my GBA-SP from the wall.

The charger was this wide flat rectangle shape where the only way to unplug it was to claw grip it on the sides. But then the sides were beveled inward so that your fingers could easily slip behind it as you pulled it off the wall.

Also I was like 9. Maybe the biggest physical pain I've experienced in my life. I felt it for over a week afterward.

Nintendo's charger designs are insane.

1

u/gamas 13d ago

You know what's funny - because the UK plug absolutely requires the third prong, the UK version of this charger actually did rotate it 90 degrees (so the wire is pointing up).

1

u/kioku119 13d ago

Tons of plugs are rude and obnoxious like this >_<

1

u/louie_215 13d ago

Thankfully Nintendo fixed this on the Switch (they made it vertical), but still, I have no idea why 3ds wall adapters need to be so bulky. Even the Switch one is still massive. I mean, a typical USB-C adapter doesn't have to be so big.

1

u/sleepyzane1 13d ago

i hate this too

1

u/CommercialMoist3537 13d ago

I hear you! Those bulky brick designs are super frustrating, especially when they block multiple outlets on a power strip. It's a hassle no matter the region, but it seems even worse with the two-prong setups like in NA and JP. Why can't they just make them more compact?

1

u/toforama 13d ago

Get some 1ft or maybe even 6in extension cords. Solves the 'wall wart on a power strip' issue.

1

u/sicarius254 12d ago

We got some really short extension cords from Amazon to alleviate this problem with plug bricks. They’re like a foot long (slightly less than a third of a meter) and amazing.

u/Dingidang 12d ago

Something similar happens here in the USA with wall warts - I ended up ordering a half dozen 1 ft extension cords just to keep on hand some years back. I've used four.

1

u/airsoftsoldrecn9 11d ago

This is literally any wall wart type power supply. This an some designs for power supply strips. Honestly they almost always suck. I don't know how the designer cannot fathom "oh, maybe I should test this on an actual set of plugs and verify". Then again, they probably did and some bean counter was like "nope, too expensive; cheap, shit design will do please."

It's the brick that you can't plug anything next to it.

Eventually, the wall plugs will be standardized all over the world.

u/fatjuan 13d ago

That would be fun as there are various mains voltages around the world.

u/yoosirree 13d ago

Why couldn't they be standardized as well?

That would require basically all the infrastructure that each region has built over the last 100 years to be replaced. Extreme cost, and centuries worth of man-hours. Probably also political considerations–every country thinks their way is the best.

There is a country where half of it runs on 50Hz and the other half runs on 60Hz.

It's a massive pain in the ass with actual consequences and even then no one is planning on harmonising the standards even though it's the same country because it takes so much effort to change even just the frequency. They chose instead to just get conversion stations at the frequency border to balance load in case of a power supply drop in either side of the country.

Most electronic mains operated gear that uses any type of timing usually uses the mains frequency as a standard, so the 50Hz stuff runs faster on 60, etc.

Although they look the same, the Chinese plugs are about 10% bigger, and have only been around since the 60's.

I used to test appliances for Australian certification, and they would often have these plugs attached. I had to slice them off and re-fit Australian type plugs to be able to test them.

Maybe put down the phone

It doesn't fit. Always been annoying.

How about “Australia, just give us real plug sockets like the UK has”? 😂

EDIT: Okay, fair enough on the downvotes but those sockets are pretty terrible. It wouldn’t be possible on a UK plug to attempt this and unplug the plug next to it without even touching it.

I think the downvotes are because UK plugs are pretty bad too. Not as bad as the US and Australian ones, but still surface mounted, still not rotatable, and they manage to take up even more space than that charger.

Possibly.

If the stupid plug is sideways like this, I don't think the socket would change much. Although your little doors on the active and neutral are a brilliant idea.

My power socket is perfectly fine thank you very much! Also, the switches are actually very useful because you don’t have to yank the whole cable out every time you want to cut the power
