Looking for accommodation

Hey how’s it going, I’m gonna be coming out to the Cowichan valley area from Manitoba this march and will be staying till the end of November here to attend viu in Duncan for the hvac trades program, might stay after as well but it just depends on where I can get an apprenticeship going for myself. So I’m looking for a place I can rent that’s gonna be under 1300 per month, I have a vehicle so I’m willing to drive under 20 mins to uni from the place. If you know of anything that could work for me or any ideas of what I could do for cheap accommodation I would really appreciate that. I don’t know much about the Duncan area either so if there’s some place to steer clear of do let me know as well, thank you.

Probably will need a roomie. Reason is that apartment rentals in the area are insane due to low availability.

FB marketplace is where most rentals are posted here. VIU might have an off-campus housing website with recommendations of where to look? For that budget, you will not likely be looking at a room in a shared suite; 1 bedroom apartments seem to start around $1500-1700. You could live anywhere from Mill Bay to Chemainus or Crofton and still be 20 mins to school, depending on how far off the highway you are. Sometimes there are cabins in Shawnigan Lake available in the off season for shorter term rentals that might work for you.

Also, people have success posting about themselves and what they are poking for on neighborhood Facebook groups. Don't be afraid to do an ISO post.

Contact VIU student services. I believe they have a housing/rental program or at the very least they should have resources for you to help.

I did reach out a few times but haven’t gotten much assistance from them sadly

That's a bummer, viu Cowichan campus is definitely not as together as the Nanaimo one. Maybe try going through Nanaimo and they may be able to push a little more aggressively if you haven't already tried the route.

Palmdale Mannor apartments may have a bachelor suite or 1 bedroom in that price range.
