[Post Game Thread] #1 Auburn defeats Texas, 87-82 Post Game Thread

u/WalkingCarpet Auburn Tigers • Final Four 1d ago
Outstanding effort from Texas to not pack it in when they were down 20. I never want to see Arthur Kaluma again. Any road win in this league is an accomplishment this year.
34
u/warneagle Auburn Tigers • Central Michigan Chi… 1d ago
yeah that wasn't even just "calls I disagree with", they just straight up fucked up multiple calls down the stretch
165
u/Hyperstar5 Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Kaluma is fucking terrifying

u/portuguesetheman Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Why do people decide to play the game of their lives against us?
58
u/UnderwaterB0i Auburn Tigers 1d ago
I know it’s an odd spot for Auburn, but it’s called having the target on your back. It’ll get worse if we beat SC Saturday.

With Kentucky and Tennessee both losing on the road I’ll just take a win even if we almost shit our pants at the end.

Was watching on mute at a hotel bar, what in the bell kinda choke was that ? Like is that how you beat auburn ?
18
u/WarDEagle Auburn Tigers 1d ago
That was the perfect storm of Auburn having a bad game/getting lackadaisical when up big, a great player on the opposing team playing lights out even by his own standard, and horrendous officiating. I'll take the 5 point win any time in that situation, but yes, that's apparently how you take em to the wire.

u/Key-Lie-1507 Texas Longhorns 1d ago
Good game Auburn, y’all are a great team. Shoutout to Arthur Kaluma for giving me hope that we MIGHT win 2 games this month

u/GameBuster0703 Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Dude is an absolute baller. Not hate towards him. He put your team on his back and did everything he could.

Dude played like fire, this wasn't a game without his leviathan effort. Im impressed.

Kaluma was insane he literally did the exact same thing to us as Dalton Knecht last year

u/camham Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Winningest coach in program history, how are we honoring him? Pearl Arena? Pearl Court at Neville Arena? The Pearly Gates for the student section (his personal choice)?
26
u/MichaelMedallion Auburn Tigers 1d ago
I wish Neville was called “The Pearl”
8
14
u/Need_Burner_Now Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Same, however the Neville’s purchased that honor after Bruce has said repeatedly that he doesn’t want an arena named after him.

I couldn't help but notice watching the UF game that it might be called the 'Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center at Billy Donovan Court'.
Fuck it. Go for it. Why not.

u/sererson Florida Gators • Nova Southeastern… 19h ago
I believe it's Billy Donovan Court at the Exactech Arena at the Steven C. O'Connell Center
Goes right along with Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
2
u/Miserable-Delivery47 15h ago
"Nate Oats Court at Mercedes Arena" has a nice ring to it. I can dream.
58
u/tgrogan21 Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Not gonna bitch about the refs. Kaluma went fucking off. But seriously, if Bruce doesn't get on their asses for letting a 21 point win get down to 3 I'm gonna be pissed. This is the 4th game in a row where the opposing team has went on a run in the last 5-10 minutes. Gotta fix that!
34
u/Awesometom100 Auburn Tigers 1d ago
The first 2 were more acceptable cause we benched our starters but the last two have been concerning, this one especially.
21
u/your-favorite-user Duke Blue Devils 1d ago
It’s just a lack of urgency. The team gets up big and quickly becomes overly confident which ultimately leads to selfish play and poor effort. The amount of uncharacteristic nonsense we watched the last 10 minutes of game time warrant a Bobby Knight-level meltdown from Bruce.
25
u/soniichu Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Can’t sum up this team any better than broome getting smacked in the face, pouting for a call, not getting it, turning and draining a 20 ft jumper, then screaming at the ref on the way back and getting a T with a minute left
-15
u/Helicopsycheborealis Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago
Broome needs to get his emotions under control or he's going to cost the team one of these days. His confidence is through the roof (rightly so) but he seems thin-skinned and vengeful at times. If I were an opposing coach or player I'd try to get under his skin early on and enjoy the fruits of that labor.
6
u/MattAU05 Auburn Tigers 20h ago
Giving up 55 points in the second half is atrocious. It’s good with have four days between games. I wonder if one of those practices will be extra long.
57
u/nhudson Auburn Tigers 1d ago

u/CageChicane Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Officiating was okay. My only beef is how they got 3 points after committing a flagrant.
32
u/Keep_Cool_Coolidge Auburn Tigers 1d ago
It was not, in fact, okay. Last 10 minutes of the game they literally stopped every run we went on with a bad call, and every run texas went on was either started or extended by another bad call. It was definitely a double digit swing just in bad calls.
16
u/TheInsatiableRoach Auburn Tigers 1d ago
It was ridiculous the last few min of that game wasn’t even basketball it was just each team alternating free throws then Kaluma occasionally launching a 3
26
u/super911man Auburn Tigers 1d ago
Okay? Broome got hit in the face right in front of ref and instead Broome gets a tech
4
4
u/18WheelerPackage Texas Longhorns 1d ago
I believe it was because it was considered a live ball foul, so the play continues and then they assess the foul via replay. Just a wacky overall play for sure
7
u/CageChicane Auburn Tigers 1d ago
What? No. The foul was on Texas...an offensive foul. You don't get continuation on that.
3
u/18WheelerPackage Texas Longhorns 1d ago
I think since it was off ball and Pope getting the shot off almost simultaneously, the bucket is counted and the foul is assessed. Like I said just a wacky unusual bang bang play
9
u/CageChicane Auburn Tigers 1d ago
You are correct about how it happened, but it is an absurd call.
2
u/18WheelerPackage Texas Longhorns 1d ago
Oh no doubt a tough call, like on the flip side if Pope was still in the act of shooting and Tre fouled before he releases the ball- bucket wouldn’t have counted. The ball becomes dead immediately, no FT’s.

u/IBumpFuzz Auburn Tigers 1d ago

Yeesh. Never knew that. I guess that’s why Bama ditched their “all-plaid” theming for basketball, huh.
(For those too young to remember, Sanderson famously always wore a plaid sport jacket, and it became a real thing - I believe they even had center court painted with a plaid design at one point. Kind of like they do with the Bear Bryant houndstooth pattern.)

Any road win is a good win so I’ll take it. However, we have a tendency to take our foot off the gas when we get up big. A habit that surely stems from playing in so many blowouts. Texas was just the first team to be persistent. Hopefully, this scared us enough that we’ll keep playing hard even when up big. IDC if that means you win by 40!
Also, FUCK refs who miss obvious calls & then T guys when they complain. GTH!
5
u/jortsandrolexes Auburn Tigers 1d ago
That’s sort of my takeaway. We’ve been fucking around with leads and missing opportunities to pad our metrics, which I’m sure the players don’t care about when we’re beating decent teams by 15+. Hopefully tonight scared them enough to actually keep their foot on the gas next time around.

We won by 5. But the refs allowed 3 points even though there was an f1 on the same play. They didn’t call a blatant goaltending on Texas and they called a tech on Broome cuz they were wrong. We covered. Idc

inexcusably bad calls all in the same direction. Then they get 1 bad call on the out of bounds but it would benefit us and they fix it. Magically end up inside the betting margin.

Oh boy. I mean at least we tried in the second half this time. That press also in the final minute was disorganized and ineffective. Come on RT.
Fair play to Auburn. Thank you for not completely sweeping us away with Broome and co.
5
u/jortsandrolexes Auburn Tigers 1d ago
If you want to beat Auburn, allow them to go up 20-0 to start the game. Every time Auburn reaches a 20 point lead they’re going to coast the rest of the game.
It’s been an issue for a few years now but never more evident than in this stretch of Purdue/Mizzou/Texas where Auburn had a chance to blow it open and pad the metrics a bit and squandered them by messing around.
4
u/Lester8_4 1d ago
The main team never played poorly in that Purdue game. It was absolute domination until Pearl put the walkons on at the end when the game was COMPLETELY dusted (which all significant metrics take garbage time into account).
Don’t let the scoreline fool you, Purdue was never even remotely in that game.

IIRC They earned a #1 seed in the 1999 NCAA tournament when they had Chris Porter, but they were not #1 at the time (per the AP poll). If memory serves, Porter got suspended before the tournament and Auburn lost in the Sweet 16 to Ohio State.
It was the 2003 team that lost to Melo and was led by Marquis Daniels.
Apparently 2022 was the first time ranked #1 in the AP Poll.
