If we can play like absolute shit and still win by 20+, we are going to be very hard to beat
loses to Chaminade in the first round (no don’t ask me how a D2 team makes the tourney)

Normally yes but Utah is a really bad team

Utah is not Big 12 ready.

Wasn’t in football, not in basketball, sure as hell won’t be in baseball.
Why did these bums think that they were too good for the Big 12?

Base ball? What is that?

It’s a great game. Love our school team. Lots of games in Morgantown.

This performance, against a better team/roster? Would have been problematic. But if there was a game to get F- performances from the bigs - J Jeff? This was it.

u/rollinwithmahomes Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
To be fair, ISU has always struggled playing down to their opponents. They get lulled to sleep and play like crap. They normally wouldn’t win by 20 though.

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 18h ago
I get that and I not "upset" by the general performance of the team.
But the one thing I AM really upset with is the play from our bigs. The awareness, blocking out/bodying up, and gettint balls on the defensive end has been an issue all season (was last year too but outside of Milan this is a different group). This isn't about expecting board "domination", rather getting the boards you should get and prevent giving up the bad and excessive oboards.
Our guards rebounded great, but the bigs outside j Jeff put on a masterclass of board futility.

u/rollinwithmahomes Iowa State Cyclones 15h ago
Agreed, we need a Dustin Hogue type energy guy to get the starters moving in those slumps. Chatfield needs to be that guy but I don’t know if he’s got enough dog in him.

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 14h ago
One thing I dont get is why we aren't playing Watson a little bit. Hes not a starter, and is offensively limited, but he is a good, if not great perimeter defender who can rebound. Hes also excellent at running the floor. At the end of the game, especially with a lead (where defense and rebounding is an emphasis), players like thst can be valuable.
It might might not be every game, but there are some where I think he could/should get 5 or 6 minutes.

u/rollinwithmahomes Iowa State Cyclones 6h ago
Agreed, they need the role players to get minutes in these blowouts. Gotta get them ready for March when the madness happens and somebody gets in foul trouble.

That was the worst feeling 23 point conference win I think I've ever watched

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
Yeah. Utah is bad but, overall, that was a listless team performance. It felt like CuJo and Lipseh versus the world tonight. And the Wold Was Not Enough.

true Curtis and Tamin were pretty good, I really wish Curtis's 360 shot went in lol

u/PhDShouse Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
Highlight reel play with poor execution on the actual shot. Everything leading up to it was amazing but he just gave it too much power

u/rollinwithmahomes Iowa State Cyclones 20h ago
I do worry about the hero ball that Gilbert and Lipsey play sometimes. It seems to work, but man it worries me that they rely so heavily on putting their heads down, driving and chucking it up.

u/PhDShouse Iowa State Cyclones 20h ago
Yeah when a team plays good interior defense against us it gets sketchy. Hopefully they look at film and find a way to get better separation when they make a drive to the basket or find a good outlet pass to set up a better shot

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 18h ago
Nah, it was a bad force to the rim that forced him to throw up bullshit.
He had a really bad force pass that became a TO but outskde of tbose moments CuJo was smart and in control

What polo can we expect in Lubbock Saturday? Any record on games against Texas Tech
16
u/Otzelbergers_Polos Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
So Otz has only worn polos this year that he hasn’t worn other years, so we can’t go off prior knowledge here.
The red w/ dark red stripes, which he has worn most of this year, has been worn twice in a row so I’d expect a change for this weekendEarlier this season on the road, Otz wore black against colorado, who also has black in their color scheme similar to tech, so I’d expect either his black polo from the Colorado game or his black with gray stripes polo from Maui to make their second appearance.
I’m also currently at tech for grad school, so I’m excited to actually be able to see which polo it is in person!

Guards? Great. J Jeff? Solid, but not spectacular. Other bigs (including Milan)? Pitiful.
Credit to Utah for bringing some effort. Had they not brought it, the score would have been much worse. That's not a good team .

Not a great performance but they still cover. Only 11 assists on the night and 6 of them from CuJo.

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
I hadnt thought about it much but we did NOT pass the ball that well. But part of that was from us exploiting the lane so effectively. When you are making shots in the lane/scoring from the line, you don't "need" assists.

You wanna downvote me on this take again? Or was 30 points not enough for you, frauds?
Good win for State, we continue to demolish and destroy.

Flagg is a monster and that defense is stifling, would be fun to see how a 3 way round robin would turn out

I’d say Hilton was 60% full, low energy except when we started to fall behind

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago
Best part of the game was Lipsey. He has been suspect to trash for much of the season, though he showed sign recently. But tonight? A FORCE getting to the rim and he had a lot more quickness and fight on the defensive end. If he's back? Good for us and bad for the rest if the league. Great game, Tamin.
And CuJo? So smooth. Outside a couple if bad decisions, he was smart with his moves and offensive decision making. When he plays like that? Watch out.
Okay, here's where I'm going to vent. IF we want to do damage in March we CANNOT, get the kind of inexcusable awareness, effort, and rebounding performances we got from our bigs (minus J Jeff of course). D Jax, Milan, and Chat, were collectively dogs hit, and D Jax and Milans efforts were embarrassing. Milan, it sucks you are missing shots but I can live with that if they are good shots (and they mostly are...those will start to fall). But that bullshit you are pulling on the defensive end should have you bench. You aren't paying attention on defense and, even more egregiouslu, on the defensive glass. The one Utah possession (end of first halfish) where they got 3 o boards while you stood near the box and did NOTHING? Otz should have benched your ass immediately. Milan will never be great at defense OR as a rebounder, but he's more capable than he's shown. With tonight's effort he will never get there.
We don't need our bigs, outside of J Jeff, to be great...just capable. Tonight they were anything but.

I went and watched that sequence (starts at 3:25 left in the first) and I think you are being pretty harsh on Milan with your criticism. The second rebound you can maybe make an argument that he should have tried a little more but he was badly positioned to make a play by how the ball came off the rim. I think CuJo could have also probably boxed out a bit better there too. The first rebound he was well positioned if the ball came to his side of the court, it came off the front and Dishon didn't get a body on Keller and then #25 also came in totally uncontested from the elbow extended. Then on the third shot he has a great defensive play to force the miss which sends the ball out of bounds to Utah. The TV guy says 3 offensive rebounds but really it was 2 and a contested shot that deflected off Milan for a Utah possession. He played some really great defense in that three play sequence before the contested shot at the rim too. He can definitely get better on defense and rebounding still, but this sequence is not a good example of how he can do that for me.

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 18h ago
The reason why I roasted is its a consistent issue, as in it happens, with consistency, to some degree every game. And on that play I mentioned it's not even about GETTING the rebound, it's about what you should in that situation. He literally stood there, wasn't looking to body up, ans hence had no chance to rebound. If you key on him he does this a lot, when shot go up and he's near the block, and someone comes flying in.
If three players, specifically, would be aware and body up up more, I think we would give up 5 less boards a game, on avg. That would be a pretty significant flip and one that could turn a close game, specifically in March.

u/mvoso Iowa State Cyclones 18h ago
Fair points, no argument from me, we need to be better at rebounding as a team. Thought we might have figured it out based on earlier results this season but seem to be sliding back into old habits a bit.
1
u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 17h ago
It's cool.
If we can get out of the "don't be our own worst enemy" bit, I see no reason why this team can't compete for a title, especially if we are healthy. The issues I see, that we can correct ourselves, are the defensive rebounding, trapping/sagging on defense, and some game management issues from Otz.
Basically, if we are consistently the smartest version of ourselves the results will follow.

The weirdest 23-point win. Didn’t feel like it had gotten to that point, but wins are wins are wins
