Tired: "experts" phoning in their brackets.

Wired: "experts" having LLMs generate brackets for them.

Lunardi sucks...and there will be apologists who say "lunardi doesn't create these brackets, they're computer generated"

then don't put his fucking name on these brackets.

u/MrAtlantic Charlotte 49ers • Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

then don't put his fucking name on these brackets.

It may be at this point more akin to "Dick Clark's rockin' new years eve with Ryan Seacrest" where his name is more of a brand than literally his personal work.

u/Koppenberg Washington Huskies • North Park Vikings 1d ago

I think it's also more of a case that the demaind for actual analysis or writing on College Basketball was shrinking and lots of talented writers were losing work, but running the Bracketology grift 12 months out of the year still payed. Lunardi had a choice between not working or putting his name on this garbage. He made the choice almost all of us would make. The work is definitely garbage, but <shrug>.

u/Koppenberg Washington Huskies • North Park Vikings 1d ago

<shrug> you can't blame Lunardi when people demand what he's giving them. It's dumb and meaningless and it undervalues the games being played but people insist.

Anyway, the problem is not that Lunardi is generating garbage predictions, the problem is that the whole idea of predictions is garbage in the first place.

Bingo. I can’t count how many times I roll my eyes when I see “Lunardi Bracketology: Week __” posted to this sub, and then the comment section full of flairs of whoever’s in the final saying “this pleases me”.

Our own sub loves this crap. They gobble it up. Especially whoever’s team happens to be hot right now

My favorite part about those sims is not who wins but what major upsets happen. I remember one of the sims had two 16 seeds winning the first game

I check it from time to time when I'm bored, but putting any stock in it is a mistake

u/randomfella69420 1d ago

I mean, he used to really put the work into it. I remember reading the old “Nitty Gritty Report” where he would go into the details of how he calculated where each team would be. It was really cool.

And I don’t blame him for not doing it, I’m sure ESPN ran the numbers and said “hey don’t bother, just slap your name on something to bring in the clicks”, but it’s a shame. A larger indicator of how all media has gone, but a shame nonetheless.

Then maybe you need some sort of line in your program like if(count(team)>1) then publish_bracket := false

I want a 136 team double-elimination bracket. Instead of having a loser’s bracket, each team would have two different paths to the championship.

86

u/BramptonBatallion Illinois Fighting Illini 1d ago

Last year UConn would play themselves in the Final

40

u/Coldcheeze Illinois Fighting Illini 1d ago

Could you imagine a 2 seed losing to two different 15 seeds in the same tourney?

66

u/dawidowmaka Illinois Fighting Illini • Cornell Big Red 1d ago

No because Calipari left Kentucky

17

u/One_Storm5093 Kentucky Wildcats 1d ago

This is the correct answer

9

u/Latvia Arkansas Razorbacks 1d ago

He doesn’t need Kentucky to pull it off, it was inside him the whole time ❤️

4

u/Briggity_Brak 1d ago

He needs Kentucky to get the 2 seed

6

u/Gamecat235 Arizona Wildcats 1d ago

Listen here… I don’t want to imagine, but if it was going to happen? We are a top candidate (maybe not this year, but…)

25

u/finemenot_hereiam Illinois Fighting Illini 1d ago

I don’t think I could have emotionally handled watching us play UConn twice

5

u/StrykerNightowl UConn Huskies 1d ago

Does that mean we have 2 different versions of a 30-0 run?

1

u/InitiativeSavings797 Illinois Fighting Illini 1d ago

If he scores 100, he scores 100. We are gonna keep going at him

10

u/Briggity_Brak 1d ago

What i want is the NIT and NCAA Tourney to swap and converge.

NCAA Tournament is 32 Conference Champions.

NIT Tournament is 64 At-large bids (maybe keep the Regular Season champ auto-bids?)

Winners of both meet for the National Championship.

3

u/fancycheesus Arkansas Razorbacks 1d ago

do a completely open, national tournament. Each round will be double elimination (2 out of 3). The quarter finals and beyond will be best out of five.

It will take 4 months to complete.

2

u/DanTilkin UConn Huskies 1d ago

All 2000+ teams? Since it's more than 2048 teams, you'd need 12 rounds. At 1 round per week, that would be 3 months.

1

u/CountBleckwantedlove Missouri Tigers 16h ago

Double elimination would be amazing. Not series, though. Series are boring. Oh, you play the same team 3-5 games in a row (how exciting! /s).

But double elimination would see a lot of variety of teams playing and it would be fun.

u/Peytonhawk Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

You’re just jealous that we are making history smh

10

u/redcobra80 Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Idk if I have it in me to watch us get bounced early twice

Bradley in the West, Bucknell in the East.

He makes basic errors on nearly every bracket he makes. We really need to stop giving him the time of day on this sub. if you desperately want Lunardi, you know where to find him by now.

18

u/Gophurkey Purdue Boilermakers • Vanderbilt Commodor… 1d ago

Let's make Lunardi a new term to describe any sports commentary or report with obvious mistakes. 'Gosh, this bracket has two conference teams playing in the round of 64, what a Lunardi!' 'Wow, this Lunardi of an article called Michigan "the Spartans," how can they mess that up?'

13

u/Zorak9379 Illinois Fighting Illini • Stanford Cardi… 1d ago

He Britta'd it

4

u/Gophurkey Purdue Boilermakers • Vanderbilt Commodor… 1d ago

But Britta is the heart and soul of Greendale! I refuse to use her name to mean 'make a small mistake!'

Baseball reporter Bob Nightengale is notorious for that kind of stuff, the news he "breaks" seems to be the opposite of reality as often as it is accurate.

I am the second Kansas. Ask me anything

12

u/Latvia Arkansas Razorbacks 1d ago

I thought we were the other Kansas

10

u/StrykerNightowl UConn Huskies 1d ago

No you’re the pirate Kansas.

4

u/Latvia Arkansas Razorbacks 1d ago

I like that

2

u/tripsd Florida Gators 1d ago

no youre our Kansas

4

u/RepealMCAandDTA Tulsa Golden Hurricane • Georgetown Hoyas 1d ago

I also choose this guy's Kansas

1

u/Latvia Arkansas Razorbacks 1d ago

Probably going to be, unfortunately

16

u/BLSmith04 Texas A&M Aggies 1d ago

So that’s why he had #10 ranked Texas A&M just completely missing the tournament

9

u/FinsFan93 Louisville Cardinals 1d ago

Why do we give this clown a platform? Ignore him.

9

u/TICKLE_PANTS Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Well, there are two Kansas's. The one that Just wrecked UCF and beat Duke and Michigan state. Then there's the one that shouldn't even be D1, who got destroyed by Creighton Mizzou and WVU. Not sure how that one got a three seed. Probably the name on the jersey.

1

u/Particular-Nature400 NCAA • Pac-12 1d ago

the WVU one was at Kansas btw

9

u/boboguitar Texas A&M Aggies • Kentucky Wildcats 1d ago

He left Texas A&M completely out

Nice to see the second Kansas has improved. The first Kansas is staying stable on the 3 line

supposed to be Texas A&M

10

u/weealex Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Ya know, i don't think this Kansas team is particularly good, but if the can earn two seeds maybe they have a chance?

7

u/OllieQueen17 Iowa Hawkeyes 1d ago

I don't understand how he makes an error like this on nearly every bracket and they still haven't assigned an intern to proof read these.

5

u/Podoboo322 Houston Cougars • Big 12 1d ago

I mean I understand making mistakes but this if you're supposedly the tournament guy then the least you can do is check for basic fuck ups

4

u/Sufficient_Two7499 1d ago

Where dafuq is Texas a&m? He has 13 bids from the SEC and only names 12. How do you leave a current top 10 off your bracket that updated weekly?

5

u/flynnhicks03 Iowa State Cyclones 1d ago

That's what we love about him: his attention to detail...

3

u/jayhawk03 Kansas Jayhawks • Creighton Bluejays 1d ago

Hey at least we play in Wichita for both.

7

u/CRoseCrizzle Illinois Fighting Illini 1d ago

They'll get upset by both 14 seeds.

7

u/Sir_Brodie Kansas Jayhawks • Washburn Ichabods 1d ago

Good Jayhawks under-seeded, Bad Jayhawks would be lucky to be seeded at all.

6

u/AngryQuadricorn March Madness 1d ago

Varsity and JV. What you don’t realize is their JV team is Kansas State.

3

u/I_Hate_Humidity San Diego State Aztecs 1d ago

Better have a deep bench if you're going to be playing back-to-back games.

3

u/idoma21 Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

This is only fair since everyone can pay players now.

3

u/C_Beeftank Tennessee Volunteers 1d ago

Big 12 must be having an amazing year that kansas qualified twice without winning the conference

3

u/skesisfunk Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Nice. This way we can lose in the round of 32 twice!

2

u/ConsiderationOld9897 Auburn Tigers 1d ago

Just have Mizzu play both of them.

2

u/cheneyeagle Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Well if you've watched kansas they basically are 2 different teams this season.

One is the overall #1 seed and one is an 11 seed

One wins a road conference game by 51 and one loses at home

Definitely doing some jekyll and Hyde type stuff

1

u/Shadowcaster_Spark Virginia Tech Hokies • Arkansas Razor… 1d ago

University of Southeast Kansas might be one them. Got shortened back years ago to Ar-Kansas.

1

1

u/HoosierCheesehead Indiana Hoosiers 1d ago

There are lots of split squad games in March. /s

1

u/YupThatsMeBuddy Tennessee Volunteers 1d ago

That will be huge if that happens.

1

u/Ancient-Village6479 Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

He randomly fell in love with us after the loss WV it’s weird. I thought it was odd but maybe he’s right and every game from now on will be like UCF was lol.

u/finditplz1 Kentucky Wildcats • Kansas Jayhawks 1d ago

Sounds good.

1

u/sean-thebean Alabama Crimson Tide 1d ago

Unbelievable that I have to see Lunardi’s bracketology on this subreddit every day

He’s terrible at it but it has pretty logos so everyone knee jerk upvotes it

1

u/rounder55 Michigan Wolverines 20h ago

Wonder how the Jayhawks will go about this. Do you split your team up based on the opponents weaknesses? Do you split your better players up and risk losing a sense of on court chemistry? Do you have 13th year senior Dickenson on a lone wolf mission take on Yale and get the 411 on ex Yale player Daniel Wolf prior to a game against Michigan and Daniel Wolf?

1

u/CountBleckwantedlove Missouri Tigers 16h ago

I'm really hoping both of those games are the same time slot. Please let it happen!
