Well, uh, look on the bright side!

It's not like you guys have to play three ranked teams in a row or anything...yeah...

Not seeing it unless we are that quality of a loss

7

u/Letsgomountaineers5 West Virginia Mountaineers 2d ago

I mean they beat the breaks off Creighton, currently 3-0 in the Big East. The early loss to ND when they were gelling I don’t think should be held too much against them in what is essentially a power ranking.

And we are a Quad 1 team lol, we are a quality loss.

Sorber playing like an All American certainly helps

0

u/hamilton280P West Virginia Mountaineers 2d ago

Big East only has like 2 contending teams. And Georgetown had a weak non conf like DePaul who started 7-0. I’m just saying, it took us beating Kansas in AF to even get ranked after we already beat two ranked teams this year and lost to a couple top 50 teams.

1

u/Letsgomountaineers5 West Virginia Mountaineers 2d ago

That’s just because of preseason expectations still carrying weight, just like Georgetown.

They probably aren’t a top 25 team but someone saying “hey beating Creighton by nearly 30 and keeping the WVU game within 2 possessions like the entire game, plus getting a Big East road win is worth a shout”

Edit: plus a road win in the Carrier Dome

1

u/hamilton280P West Virginia Mountaineers 2d ago

Yeah I get it. There’s just so many good teams so far. Especially in the SEC you could possibly rank the whole SEC and that would leave just 9 spots

6

u/emduck Marquette Golden Eagles 2d ago

NGL I’m pretty nervous for Marquette vs Georgetown tomorrow (haven’t said that in awhile!) My dad was a Georgetown alum so I’ll always have a soft spot for them.

Feel like Oregon should have dropped a little more from getting hosed at home by 32

7

u/Travbowman Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

Their five Q1 wins is tied for second best in the country, only behind Auburn. Their WAB ranking is still top 4.

9

u/witchy12 Michigan State Spartans • Northe… 2d ago

True, but a 32 point home loss is not good, regardless of their resume.

3

u/Travbowman Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

Sure, and it's why I dropped them from my previous rank of 8th.

6

u/jack3moto Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

You didn’t watch the game if that’s how you feel. Illinois basically was unstoppable. Oregon didn’t play bad, they missed some open shots early in the second half and Illinois made everything. Once it got out of hand Oregon tried to press to cut a few possessions and it lead to Illinois getting a bunch of easy baskets.

It’s way more of an outlier performance than any sign that Oregon isn’t a top 20 team.

2

u/bh6891 Wichita State Shockers 2d ago

Definitely. Too bad I'm going to be spending the entire day either flying or in an airport, so I can't really watch anything.

WVU ranked!

...you know, it does make me wonder how much higher the Mountaineers would have been they not stepped off the gas as much in the second half against the Jayhawks...

11

u/Letsgomountaineers5 West Virginia Mountaineers 2d ago

Did the same against Oklahoma State. 46-17 at half or something like that. Only ended up scoring 69 and winning by 19.

Its a depth issue, I think Devries is just eating up the shot clock and limiting possessions to limit exertion when he have a game in hand.

The Kansas game we had a 7 man rotation and that was like the only 7 we could actually play outside of basically walk ons. We played Haris Elezovic who has maybe 15 minutes of game time for like 9 minutes in that Kansas game because we literally had 1 healthy 5. And he proceeded to miss a wide open layup and get abused down low but he had to stay in just for rest.

At the point where we can’t afford Small to leave the court so we sub in 2 other point guards just to play him off ball in the corner and that’s his break lol.

Devries is the fucking real deal. This isn’t an overly talented roster, especially at this point with 3 of our “guys” from the offseason all hurt

WVU has the resume of a top 15 team. Neutral site wins over Gonzaga and arizona, away win at Kansas and losses are on the road at pitt (although it was a total blowout) and neutral site Louisville. WVU was just so out of everyone’s radar to begin the season they have struggled to get real credit

Only thing that has me confused is Ole Miss. Their top three wins are Louisville, BYU, and Georgia. Nothing bad about those three teams, but when they're the only quality wins on the resume so far, I don't see how that's a top 22 team.

Was travelling this week, so no write up, but here's my poll: https://www.cbbpoll.net/ballots/10/677be9fd95207df9da83a231

5

u/Equivalent-Yard3824 Boston University Terriers 2d ago

Team's I'm +-5 from consensus:

* Memphis (-6) - while the highs of Memphis are undeniable, I wanted to use the end of the poll to reward a few other teams that have impressed me of late, still had them in my next 5
* Pitt (+5) - With only 5 meaningful games and a 3-2 record in those games it's a bit hard to tell for Pitt, but they pass the eye test for me, I wouldn't put them much higher than this though.

Wow that's it, definitely feels like everything is sort of converging and we're starting to have a bit clearer picture of the top 20 or so, leaving less room for massive differences.

I guess I'll comment on leaving Florida at 6 - I'm not in the business of faulting teams who performed as expected, road game against a top 8 opponent and it came down to the final minutes. I don't think Marquette did enough to pass them, and Kentucky's breadth of work isn't as good even with the H2H.

4

u/Travbowman Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

Memphis has the same Q1 record as Duke, and 6 more Q2 wins as the Blue Devils. Yes, their Q3 home loss should ding them, but to say they're not a top 25 team is a bit punitive.

2

u/Equivalent-Yard3824 Boston University Terriers 2d ago

100% agree with you, and I actually have been ranking them pretty consistently, I had them in the rankings pre-Maui and very high afterwards. Mostly just poll inertia and my want to recognize some other teams who had big weeks that kept them off, should correct itself shortly.

3

u/jmac3560 Memphis Tigers 2d ago

I'm so confused by that logic though, and then still including Ole Miss. We're less than 10 days removed from Memphis beating Ole miss by 20. Has ole miss really impressed you more than Memphis lately?

2

u/Equivalent-Yard3824 Boston University Terriers 2d ago

Yeah honestly, looking harder at it, probably should've completely swapped Ole Miss and Memphis at minimum. Will correct it moving forward.

West Virginia earned their ranking, very impressive work from DeVries. I'm not sure if I buy Mississippi State as a top 15 team, but the SEC will give them plenty of opportunities to really prove themselves.

Going from #20 --> #32 after a 1 point loss vs USU and a 8 point win @ Boise feels really unfair. I know that's over 2 weeks (last week we were #35), but feels really bad to essentially get dinged 12 spots for going 1-1 in Q1 opportunities.

1

u/Indigo_Menace Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago

If Kansas can play every game like they did yesterday, that’s gonna be a fun fun team to watch. Only haymakers, crushing boards and controlling the paint. We will see here soon if they can keep up with Iowa state though lol

1

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago

Kansas will have a hell of a time stopping our scoring in the paint. Several guards, namely Keshon, are maestros at gaining the lane and finishing at the rim. Having Jefferson, who can not only score in the post, but distribute to cutting players, makes us a lot more lethal.

Historically, even under Otz, we can be our own worst enemy. Blocking out on the defensive glass is suspect/inconsistent, as is our intellect on the defensive end. We aren't a good doubling team, yet continue to do it more than we should. We also sag and collapse a lot (and when it's not necessary), leading to wide open 3s. If KU takes and hits their open 3s and hits the O glass hard? We will could have issues.

Having Jackson and Jefferson, especially the latter, drastically changes our team. He's the big we've been lacking and, at the moment, he's playing at a 1st team, all-conference level.

5

u/Indigo_Menace Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago

Hitting open 3s isn’t in KUs playbook 😂😂

1

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago

Better figure it out quick as that's probably the best way to get to us. Secondary is crashing those O boards (only Jefferson consistently bodies up and grabs boards on that end), and last is taking advantage of those doubles. The 3s will be there, but instead of shooting them you can drive then dish down low. Just like Tyson's Punchout, you need to upper cut us when we make our mistakes.

Have the exact same top 7 in order. Slightly differing picks A&M at 13 instead of 9. Still have Oregon at 12, rankers have them at 15. Michigan State, who is at 16, I have in the poll this week. I placed them at 20 initially, but evaluating resumes I preferred Purdue and West Virginia so they ended up at 22. I have Memphis 3 spots and Utah St 5 spots higher than consensus. I found Michigan's resume to be weighed down by 3 mediocre losses, preferring Nebraska over them.

I wanted to keep them in, but the margin of their loss and their lack of quality wins meant they got passed by teams. Their best wins aren't aging the best, and they have 4 losses (even to mostly great teams, the margins have been stinky).
