Why isn't grass put in place with the surface tool affected by snow? Discussion

They need to redo this whole snow layer thing because it looks extremely weird compared how CS1 Snowfall or other games like Manor Lords, Farthest Frontier and many other games are doing snow.

I also get some very bizarre sparkling trees and lots of visual noise when it snows and day/night cycle is enabled.

Best and simpliest would be to allow every asset to have a snowy version, like most games with dynamic seasons do.

It’s especially odd to me because EA had this figured out with The Sims all the way back in 2007. Custom objects would be covered in snow properly without even requiring a separate mesh or texture. And on top of that only the faces of the mesh that are exposed to the sky would be covered in snow. I’m not a game dev but if the automation has been around that long I can’t help but wonder what the CS devs are doing wrong in this aspect.

yeah shoutout to sims snow for always being cool. it's also worse in the sims 4 now, no more piling up :(

Ah yes, back in the olden days when EA wasn't owned by bloodsucking vampires. Good times indeed.

Did you mod Sims and SimCity and such, back in the day?

Edit: yeah yeah, off-topic question. I was just curious if they had.

Edit edit: whoops! I just realized maybe this came across as something other than a genuine question. My bad! Just curious.

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 22h ago

what does that have to do with base game features in 2007? 🤦‍♂️

4

u/subpar_cardiologist 15h ago

Nothing, i was asking an unrelated question. I just wasn't clear about that. I updated my post. Whoops!

1

u/TheSammy58 14h ago

Sorry you got downvoted lol. I didn’t take it as a negative question. I have indeed made some content for Sims 2/3/4 but nothing super advanced when it comes to editing code. It’s kind of like familiarizing yourself with HTML so you can customize your Tumblr blog. You start to pick up on the basic elements along the way lol.

u/subpar_cardiologist 7h ago

Heh, no worries. That's cool, i wondered since it seemed like from your wording you might have. Back in the good 'ol days when you could mod a game with Notepad, hahaha.

1

u/croooooooozer 19h ago

I think they're complaining about the snow layer in general rather than custom assets not being supported

6

u/subpar_cardiologist 19h ago

What? Oh! Yeah, dangit! My question had nothing to do with cities, i was just curious if they had...whoops!

Yeah the whole thing doesn't work properly and when zoomed out it disappears on assets like trees entirely, but not on others. Fields also are unaffected by snow, but do change their texture slightly to this horrible blurry patchy snow which doesn't look realistic at all. Then we have concrete which mostly seems unaffected.

I decided to just turn the snow off because all of the small issues just make it look horrible. It's odd, since CS1 handled snow very well.

Sparkling Trees is a feature called “global illumination”. You can turn it off in graphics settings.

1

u/AdmiralBumHat 16h ago

Thanks. That worked. Although they should fix this one too. I played many games with global illumination, but non had sparkling trees and textures.

u/Few-Leg-7890 20h ago

i spent a few hours playing farthest frontier last week, and the whole time i was just wishing that’s how the snow and trees looked in cs2

1

u/AddictedtoSaka 15h ago

How CS1 handles Snow is far from perfect (Snow on Assets even inside from Structures) but still better than CS2.

114

u/ketchup1345 1d ago

Why aren't roads or tracks affected by snow also? 🤷‍♂️

28

u/Furdiburd10 19h ago

That's a feature! Your road cleaning ppl are just very motivated at removing snow and work with hyperspeed when it's snowing to make sure no one will have issues with ice on road

1

u/ketchup1345 1h ago

Makes sense cuz they clog up my roads.

-14

u/Teh_Original 18h ago

"Why doesn't the snow pile perfectly when the snow gets plowed? These devs suck!"

1

u/ketchup1345 1h ago

Lol. They do need to add some snow textures tho 🤣

23

u/aMonkeyRidingABadger 1d ago

I use a weather mod to keep temperature above freezing so I never see snow. It’s just too ugly.

3

u/SFDessert 19h ago

I play on maps that don't get snow. I can't remember if they're modded in or part of the base game, but I sometimes forget snow is even a thing until I see pictures like this here.

89

u/Dinosbacsi 1d ago

Holy shit this looks bad, even if you don't count the green park. Why even bother to include snowy weather in your game if this is the result?

24

u/Few-Leg-7890 20h ago

that and every car drives around with their windshield completely obstructed

6

u/doperidor 13h ago

Probably the worst implementation of seasons I’ve ever seen. They could’ve at least made grass turn brown along with the trees before just fading to pure white snow.

10

u/socialeclectic 1d ago

Am I the only one that actually gets snow blindness from artificial snow xD. It's impossible to play when you cannot see anything its so white

45

u/ricardo_agb 1d ago

The game is an alpha version, they just didnt mention it a year ago, we’re hitting the beta, maybe one day itll be there

52

u/1Phaser 1d ago

Because the game is early access

3

u/lintens 23h ago

The surface tool grass comes with under soil heating I guess 😁

3

u/dontpaynotaxes 22h ago

Because they did a half assed job at the snow layer.

3

u/kiwi2703 22h ago

Because the game was rushed and some weird design decisions were made and so far not fixed

3

u/ObjectiveDamage3341 21h ago

Snow was disappointing

3

u/MemeManXL 21h ago

Fuck it, heated park. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/marsmodule 16h ago

I’m always impressed by how unfinished this game really is

2

u/Foozy_69 23h ago

There is actually a mod you can get with grass textures that include a snow mode check city planner plays videos on YT

To be fair, that's not something Colossal Devs should be fixing blamed for. Maybe it's not possible for the modder to fix it though, I don't know.

But yeah, overall winter still doesn't feel complete. Too many things that miss snow during the winter, that are vanilla. It looks awful. Like many, I don't play with winter. And mostly because it just feels incomplete. I want to see vehicles plowing the snow on the roads, I want to see the snow reduced/removed. I don't want random parts just completely missing snow.

My speculations are, this won't get fixed until bug fixes, optimizations and reworks have come to a stop. Those are obviously a priority, and I'll assume we'll be beginning to see some polishing after everything major is done. (And I feel like we're getting close, the game has improved a lot since release, and I feel like the game will be in a very acceptable, maybe a good state in a year or so. If the game was released in this state it is in now, I don't think there would be many complaints at all.)

u/Shenk7 5h ago

Is this alpha/beta screenshot??? 😳

6

u/Apart-One4133 1d ago

They charge 60$, they releases new DLCs,  and this is what you get. A total joke.

I tried the game for free the other day, while looking at eye level, I could see the ocean instead of the ground. My city was in the middle of the ocean.

13

u/ketchup1345 1d ago

Personally I'm really enjoying the game so far. The region packs are great. I just hope they release custom modding soon.

6

u/gravity--falls 23h ago

yeah the game definitely didn't live up to the hype, but I do find myself playing 2 more than 1 at this point. It's very pretty and much more optimized now than it was at launch, and the mods at this point are good enough that many of the annoying things don't affect my overall experience.

u/um_not2surewhat2do 23h ago

I just want my international airport to actually send out cargo. Has been storing it but not shipping it out

1

u/Mypathofhealing 22h ago

Just out of curiosity, do the surface areas that modders added to the game get snow on them?

I don't have a pc at the moment so I can't test it currently. I'm just wondering if this was programmed at all in the game or if modders have found a way to incorporate it.

This is why I’m super reluctant with using grass surfaces, I’ll even delete the grass surfaces from lots. Which stinks, because sometimes they make such a great visual difference.

1

u/GreatArchitect 20h ago

I imagine that they are ploughed tbh.

1

u/Iriadel 19h ago

Use the grass surface mod from Sully, it looks great normally but also changes with the snow.

1

u/Fibrosis5O 17h ago

That’s kaka snow, just plain white untextured and inconsistent mess

1

u/Comfortable-Side1308 15h ago

I feel like snow is such a novelty.  What percentage of the player base actually enjoy it?

Inb4 the only 5 people who enjoy it reply to this.

1

u/DryWeekends 14h ago

and why are all driving cars covered in snow as well. Parked cars ok but driving ?

1

u/irasponsibly 11h ago

There's custom grass surfaces that are semitransparent, so they work with snow properly if that's something you want.

Personally I use better bulldozer to auto remove it, and add it back where it makes sense.

1

u/PCR94 2h ago

lmao cs2 is a disaster, they should just refund everyone at this point

1

u/biwum 1h ago

took me a minute to realize that this is the default view and not some other map view like public transport or something, definetely stating with 1

u/sterkam214 16m ago

This is how it snows in Finland.

1

u/NickElso579 20h ago

Some modded surfaces interact properly with snow, you can use those or wait until they fix this. They've ironed out alot of the mechanical gripes, so I think that one will get fixed sooner rather than later. That being said, keep complaining about it and the developers will probably increase the priority

0

u/Atephious 23h ago

Because it’s the grass of back years which also don’t get snow. Not the terrain grass which actually should get snow. My terrain doesn’t. It snows but nothing sticks. Not sure why.

-1

u/um_not2surewhat2do 23h ago

Shoutout Tree Controller mod and Nice Weather mod. Fixes these problems right up

3

u/Excellent_Ad_2486 22h ago

they don't fix anything, they remove snow so you don't see it lol
