Flag Icons Pack updated to include UK Thumbnails Modding Release

u/DBenzie Nov 26 '24
That's not been the British flag since 1801

u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
Yep, well aware.

u/the123king-reddit Nov 26 '24
This is like using a 48 star flag for US, or the red, white and black flag for Germany.
That's not the UK flag, and claiming it is will just cause upset.

u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
I am using a 13-star and 7-stripe US flag. Because it's a 32px high image, it's not practical to fit the whole thing.

I really appreciate the work you have done, but there are significant, recent, factors you neglecting.
Many people lost their lives in wars and to terrorism, as recently as this decade, over the idea of Northern Irish independence/Irish (re)unification. This isn't just choosing to represent a country with a different symbol, it has more meaning than that.
Are there not multiple white pixels in the diagonal white stripes? Can one row of them not be made red?

u/Team-_-dank Nov 26 '24
It's a game mate.
3
u/endlessplague Nov 26 '24
... So that just makes history irrelevant?
-6
u/Team-_-dank Nov 26 '24
I mean, it's not a history book or a game even about history. Its just a flag on a random building in a city builder game. It doesn't matter.
3
u/endlessplague Nov 26 '24
So e.g. putting up the N*zi flag for Germany would be ok, that what you're saying?
Grow up. It matters.

u/Team-_-dank Nov 26 '24
Life must be hard when you take everything so seriously. Lighten up buddy! Go fix your roundabouts.

I'm so pleased that it doesn't matter to you, It'd be great if we could all live in a world where that could be the case.

u/KungFluPanda38 Nov 26 '24
Just need a red, white and black flag for Germany and the pack is complete.

I don't think that's the current flag...

I know - I explained why in a couple of places.

This should be a default tag icon on the pack, the original can be looked over a bit sometimes. Flags make it bolder and more obvious. Cheers!!

Download Here: cities2-flag-icons on github
If you don't like the inconsistent mix of Flags (EU), Digraphs (Regions), and Maps (NA) for the Region Packs - here you go!
You need to have Asset Icon Library, and then put these files in that mods' CustomThumbnails
folder. This is not a 'code mod', so I can't put it on Paradox Mods. (plus, the modding toolchain is a lost cause on Linux)
And if you're wondering where Northern Ireland went - the counter charged saltire just looks bad if you try to squish it to a square, and there's just no way I could find to make it look good. Either the corner lines up wrong, or the proportions look wrong.

Thank you for the explanation! I was wondering why it isn't on PDX Mods
4
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
There might be an easier way to do it at some point - but right now to put on PDX Mods, I'd have to learn C# and own a Windows machine.
It'd be cool if someone wrapped these up in a 'mod' once the region packs are done - but I can't.

Honestly, I'd been caught up trying to squish it, I hadn't tried doing a cropped version. I'll have another go sometime in the next fortnight, see if I can get it to look good, and maybe add it when I update to add Japan.

you have to make clear, pixelated version, it is hard to do it with such a shapes (diagonal lines) and to keep recognizability and proportion/math in regular scale and ratio

Lol, you cant* just change a country's flag beacuse you think it looks bad. There's a way to incorporate the correct flag, as per any other app etc . What will you do if they release an Australia pack, a Nepal pack? (I know they wont, but it demonstrates my point - if you offer flag icons...then they should be the correct icons).
ETA: *I believe you shouldn't

I made these for myself, and put in the extra effort to make it public so others can use it. If you don't like it, don't use it.
what will you do if they release an Australia pack[?]
That one's easy - federation star.
1
u/Smudger_13 Nov 26 '24
Yeah absolutely, appreciate that you have put work in to make these and make it public. Just my two cents from a flag nerd/purist, I believe that those symbols shouldn't be inherently changed, only superficially (e g made square).
federation star.
Lol, it's a decent symbol! And similar to the Nepal sun icon 😉
2
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
Unfortunately, turns out it's hard to change something superficially without changing it structurally!

If you don't like it, don't use it.
Sorry but I don't really think this excuses it. The moment you make it public is the moment that you take on the responsibility of representing these nations accurately. If you can't handle that responsibility, don't upload it. If it can't be done in a way that's aesthetically pleasing and accurate to the source, then it might be time to consider a different iconography than the flag.
Flags are a poor choice for an icon in my opinion because of the limited space juxtaposed against the detail required to discern one country's flag from another. How would you represent Liberia, for instance, in such a way that it is easily distinguished from The United States, Puerto Rico, Malaysia, and Chile? You simply don't have the real estate to make this work in the long term.
IMO the game's UI/UX needs some consideration rather than working within the confines of the existing framework. As each CCP releases these menus are only going to become more and more cluttered. There really needs to be a mechanism where specialties can be selected using a drop-down menu rather than cluttering the zoning menu with new types.

u/MeowthMewMew Nov 26 '24
what will you do for eastern europe and west/east coast?
2
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
The readme page on github has them - probably Ukraine, California or Arizona, and New England, depending on where the packs pull their inspiration from.
1
u/ThatWaffle1851 Nov 26 '24
Are those nations packs dlc or mods?
1
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
Official free content packs, released through Paradox Mods.
1
u/ThatWaffle1851 Nov 26 '24
Do achievemnts still work with them, trying to get 100% right now.
2
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24
As far as I know, yes, the content packs will. But installing the Asset Icon Library mod needed to use these flags wouldn't - but you can also just install the Achievement Enabler mod.

u/therealtrajan Nov 26 '24
What mod is that to place the individual buildings on the bottom half of your screen

u/Konsicrafter Nov 26 '24
Are you planning to release it as a code mod? That way you could keep it updated
1
u/irasponsibly Nov 26 '24 edited Nov 26 '24
As mentioned in a couple of places - can't. Modding Toolchain isn't available on Linux, and I don't know C#.
