You really thought you could take pictures of Bay Port Michigan and think we wouldnt notice?😂

It would be a shame to build a city on something so beautiful like this. Amazing work.

Not when this is exactly what I've been wanting!! I hate building into open grasslands with no limits.

u/defect_horror Aug 04 '24
I mean, it’s realistic. Cities tend to be built on farmland. It’s called “urban sprawl”.

u/PosterMakingNutbag Aug 04 '24
Beautiful. I’ve been trying to get my farmland/rural portions of my city going and it’s really a chore.
Much more realistic to start with farms and build into them!

u/RaftermanTC Aug 04 '24
Plus a good reference point too! For future builds.
5
u/PosterMakingNutbag Aug 04 '24
Absolutely. I’ll be doing one large city and multiple smaller cities scattered throughout

This map was an evolution of this concept, so by all means! That's the intent. :)

I’ve debated making small towns and posting the save files like maps. I like designing industrial areas, I’m actually an engineer, and I like doing accurate power, water, and transport systems but get bored of the actual city building by about 10k.
It would be a map with a few smaller towns, each with a small specialized industry. Set up the logistics networks, freight and such, then post them to this sub for people to find on Paradox Mods.
Not sure how interested others would be though.

I’d legit pay for a map just like that around 10k pop, with a realistically planned utilities. Sounds like my dream start. I’m someone who hates the early game but loves the detailing that comes along with more fledged out towns/city layouts.

This is an absolutely beautiful city I'm speechless. Wish I had more time to build something like this.

Thanks for bringing some attention to our debatably flyover state lol, lovely rendition and really feels midwestern

I'll be playing this map once the game has more buildings. My whole thing is creating a large Michigan city on the shores of lake Mich or Huron.
Could you place a freeway through to start us out?
5
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Americana store front buildings would be great!
And sadly, I won't add a freeway as the hope is to give someone the chance to work up to that. Personally, when I play, I'll be adding two more lanes that follow one of the highways and create it much like an old town in the 50s seeing a freeway built up into it.

Did you use any heightmaps in the creation of this map? If so then where did you get them from?
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
I did!
I had to HEAVILY rework them though. As the data isn't always friendly. It takes quite a bit of work to get it to work well in game.
But Shank's tutorial on how to get everything in helped a lot!
https://github.com/shankscs2/cs2-qgis-tutorials/wiki/From-zero-to-heightmap:-A-full-tutorialThe 1m lidar data comes from the USGS website.

u/KittyCat424 Aug 05 '24
This seems a bit too complicated for me lol, which is a shame since there is a place I wanted to re-create lol.
Your map turned out really well though!
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
It's not so bad, just time consuming. But the learning curve wasn't fantastic. Lol
1
u/KittyCat424 Aug 05 '24
Ive created some maps for cs1, they werent particularly great. the hardest part was finding a place to get heightmaps from and i dont know this just seems so much harder lol. i wish there was an official way to get heightmaps. even if it costed a dollar or two
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Yeah, IRL heightmaps are tricky because there are probably a lot of different licensing issues unless public domain through gov sites.
2
u/Xarkkal Aug 05 '24
I dream to someday add to the community by creating maps as good as Rafterman.
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Not so hard! Just gotta slave away through frustration and pain.
Jk
It's a lot of fun!

Hello, I have wanted to make my own maps before but never had the skill. Any advice?
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Start experimenting!
There's a lot of different ways you can go about it. Water will be some of the most difficult parts of your build.
The current editor operates a lot like CS1 did, so older tutorials still apply.

u/crazyandwild2 Aug 05 '24
Thank you so much. Once I’m done, is it okay if I tag your username on Reddit to keep you updated?

This is how maps should be. I hate when maps are just blank. Absolutely beautiful work!
2
u/clubasquirrel Aug 06 '24
You should create one of Duluth, MN and the surrounding area!
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 06 '24
Oh I've wanted to, but Wisconsin's lidar data is meh so it would've been a difficult blend. Plus I think people would have struggled to build a city on a pure hill.
But I LOVE Duluth.
2
u/clubasquirrel Aug 06 '24
Oh interesting! You should check out Sandstone, MN. It’s a really neat city with cool topography, decent sized river and whatnot. Might be a cool map! I wish there were more Minnesota maps :) • Also TRUE, building on that hill in cities would be tough
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 06 '24
Fun story, I graduated high school in Mora. (Despite my my history and brand being NZ focused).
So I'm very familiar with Sandstone!
2
u/clubasquirrel Aug 06 '24
Oh cool! Small world huh 😂… I grew up around that area as well. Now I really hope we see a few Minnesota maps :)) — I love your maps btw, been using them on Cities 2 -!
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 07 '24
Thanks!
Yeah, small world indeed!
I really really wanted to do Mankato, but I had very little data to work with.
So Bay Port was the compromise. Sweeping plains, body of water.

u/kenii2k Aug 07 '24
Can’t wait to start terrorizing these lands with massive highways and an unnecessary amount of parking!!

u/Neotella Aug 05 '24
How did you attain that level of forest density?
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Bigger brush and hold it it down. For some reason that increases density.
I think there was also an update that reduced the collision radius for trees.
In some spots, Anarchy mod gets you there too.
1
u/SilverSmith09 Aug 05 '24
Just checking the farm fields are they part of the buildable area or just background?
2
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
They're in the buildable area, you have to purchase them as all the tiles are in the shape of the property lines. :)

Are all the trees is anarchy? I had a great map but when i started building the trees just stayed and i had to manually delete them. I dont know how to mass delete them. 😭
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 06 '24
My video gives a quick tutorial on how to do it. Please watch that video. Some areas have anarchy trees, and some are elevation locked.
You just use the tree brush and right click.

I'm building on this now and im at around 18000 population. Early on i accidentally deleted one of the big surface areas that are in the water and on the shore line. The surface does not allow me to build on it and im sure thats how it is ment to be. I cannot however find which surface that is. I would love to know so i can put it back and not have a big weird squared area with that looks different.
TLDR: Whats the surface in the water and on the shoreline? And what mod is needed to paint it in like any of the standard surfaces from extra detailing tools
1
u/RaftermanTC Oct 14 '24
It should be the forestry surface. I am unsure if a mod is required, but the dev mode Will for sure have it. :)

is this only for cities skylines 2? I cant seem to find it for 1? can someone link it to me please?

u/RaftermanTC 19d ago
It's for cs2
Search RaftermanNZ on paradox mods or Bay Port.
Make sure to read instructions about the map.

u/MasterRymes Aug 05 '24
Let me guess. You need also a bunch of Mods?
1
u/RaftermanTC Aug 05 '24
Anarchy is the only one you TRULY need.
Everything else is vanilla. The highlight video explains why that is.

This map looks amazing! Does it snow in winter or have you set it so it doesn’t do that?
