"is pence out?" "No, he refused to get in the car. Operation is a wash. " "So we better start deleting everything or out careers are over" "prank call! Who is this?"

u/stupidsuburbs3 Jul 23 '22
Pull a navalny style prank on one of them.
High chance of success it seems.

For those of you who haven’t read the article, this is just the metadata not the texts that have been recovered. All we know is 10 more SS dudes texted people on that day but we don’t know what and nobody knows if that can be recovered.

. All we know is 10 more SS dudes texted people on that day but we don’t know what and nobody knows if that can be recovered.
Every person who passed IT 101 will tell you they can be recovered. If it can't that's one hell of a cover up and a serious federal crime. Also, if they got the meta data they can subpoena the other person's phone.

u/windigo3 Jul 23 '22
Shame we can’t see this. It would have been fascinating to read a tip off from a Trump SS agent to a pence SS agent that their lives were in danger
14
u/windigo3 Jul 23 '22
Problem if two corrupt ss officers were texting each other. Their phones were wiped and the ss used the honour system for them to manually save any important texts. Ita possible NSA has this info but it doesn’t seem the federal govt has an ongoing criminal investigation that might leverage that
16
u/ManOfLaBook Jul 23 '22
The two agents texted to a server, that forwarded the texts to their phones. So the texts exist on the server.
1
u/Formergr Jul 23 '22
Do we know for sure though if these were SMS? If it was WhatsApp, for example, that’s not the case then I don’t think.
1
u/ManOfLaBook Jul 23 '22
That's a good question, but my understanding is that they used government phones.
1
Jul 23 '22
what carrier do they use? just dawned on me- it’s not like they use t-mobile or some shit, right?
1
u/ManOfLaBook Jul 23 '22
Sure they do, it's a government contract with one of the carriers.

They cannot and will not be recovered. This is because a factory reset also overwrites the encryption keys with new ones. So even though the metadata is still there and the messages are still there, there is no way to decrypt the messages. The carrier would also have the messages but these are typically only stored on their server for up to a year.

u/ManOfLaBook Jul 24 '22

Most state intelligence agencies will disagree
1
u/Helenium_autumnale Jul 23 '22
Doesn't it depend if the data was deleted (recoverable) or wiped (probably not recoverable)? I'm not an expert so I'm not sure .
3
u/ManOfLaBook Jul 23 '22
Wiped from the carrier?
That takes some serious doing.
6
u/nobodyspersonalchef Jul 23 '22
That's why they referenced IT 101. Basics tell ya that unless the 1s and 0s had other data written over them, repeatedly and intentionally, by a credentialed and explicitly authorized user, then the texts are all still there.
If they were written over repeatedly, which requires specific software meant to write random 1s and 0s intended to destroy data, then someone had to click "ok" when prompted, and that is logged and obviously traceable. Along with the purchase and installation of said software.
1
u/Hvarfa-Bragi Jul 26 '22
It doesn't require special hardware or software to overwrite the data.
You can use special hardware or software to ensure it happens, but it doesn't have to be intentionally erased.
It also wouldn't be logged in any way if someone did use hardware.

Doesn’t the NSA have it? Don’t they have everything? Or has that ship sailed 😆
6
u/NeighborhoodVeteran Jul 23 '22
Probably. Could be that they're giving the idiots one last chance to come clean.
2
u/bendefinitely Jul 23 '22
I doubt the NSA would have it but I could be wrong. You'd think the handful of people who's job is to keep the most powerful man on the planet alive would have some very secure encrypted system
0
u/Sekh765 Jul 23 '22
Every one of these threads keeps asking if the NSA somehow has these things. The NSA got their fucking nose smacked with a newspaper back in 08. There's no fucking way they still engage in illegal domestic surveillance, and even if they did they wouldn't be cracking encrypted USSS phones. This is a pipedream.

10 people are getting seriously fucked for violating the records retention laws. My boss told me to does not grant you immunity.

I hope the Secret Circus gets its shit together.

u/flynlionPS Jul 22 '22
Me too. In the past I always respected the Secret Service for being professional and apolitical. Not anymore. I also hope they get their shit together.

Their reputation started to go down un the 2010s. Before that, they had a sterling reputation of professionalism.

Good thing Trump still isn't in power otherwise those text messages wouldn't ever be found.
25
6
u/ClassicT4 Jul 23 '22
Trump did say he wanted those texts revealed… after it seemed like they were utterly and completely destroyed.
14
u/OG_Antifa Jul 23 '22
Just like he wanted the terrorists to go home peacefully on the 6th. After it became clear that law enforcement had gained the upper hand.
I'm sensing a pattern here.
4
u/ClassicT4 Jul 23 '22
They tried to get him to call them bad guys who broke the law and deserve punishment, and he just couldn’t bring himself to do it, even though the risk of the 25th amendment and impeachment were luring over him.

u/Time-Ad-3625 Jul 23 '22
If you're migrating phones and your first thought isn't "January 6th was a big deal. We should hold on to these texts" you are incompetent. Either way people need to be fired over this.

u/NeighborhoodVeteran Jul 23 '22
As a gov agency they aren't allowed to destroy anything. They knew what they did.

Ask Google. They spy on everything and store it in a mountain in Utah.

Secret service was probably one of the few mostly respected organizations in our government up until recently….

Only if you haven't been paying attention. There's a new scandal every few years.
From prostitutes in Colombia to non-invited WH attendees to DUI's and drugs and shots fired on the WH and unattended weapons and everything in between.

u/Helenium_autumnale Jul 23 '22
This might turn into a Pentagon Papers situation. Because I have a hard time believing that you can TRULY delete such data. It's somewhere. Traceable. Right?
1
Jul 25 '22
Maybe, but it's all a fact that the state of the art in cryptography could present a real "age of the universe" kind of problem. People assume that the current practice of data encryption can be routinely broken by motivated parties but certain laws of physics and mathematics may make that very unlikely.
21
u/portablebiscuit Jul 23 '22
All of this for a fucking third rate reality show host. What a fucking joke america has become. Not even a good joke, a lame punchline.
18
u/DownWithOCP Jul 23 '22
At the start of the week, I felt like the Secret Service was a newly formed prong of the conspiracy.
Now, it's Friday night, and after all the horror stories that have come out, I think the Secret Service has a large enough canvas to become its own separate scandal and/or investigation in addition to being part of the 1/6 conspiracy.

u/grannyklump Jul 23 '22
I'm sure someone has asked this but why can't they get the texts from the carrier like they did with the others?
0
Jul 25 '22
They won't even identify the carrier.
2
u/grannyklump Jul 25 '22
This kinda makes sense because it could be a national security risk. Maybe these phones don't use a regular carrier but a private government provided network that doesn't store data? Who knows.

Secret Service found the conveniently hidden ones to seem like nothing nefarious is going on.
5
Jul 23 '22
I think at this point everyone in this thread knows the gist of those texts. Even if the investigators never recover them I want these motherfuckers fired and prosecuted for destruction of records. If you can get a few to roll great, if not then fucking rot in prison for a decade with your family name publicly disgraced. I'm more worried about the damage control this outgoing IG has been doing for the past 6 months.
Also let's not forget burner phones were being used all over the white house. No chance these guilty SS fucks didn't have their own.
3
u/bmxtiger Jul 23 '22
Blatant cover up. The SS can't use Dr. Fone to back up texts before a migration? Hell, I have to do that for companies with 5 employees.
3
u/Jkillaforilla90 Jul 23 '22
If it was iPhones chances are it was I cloud servers that maintain the data for months after it’s been deleted.
1
u/fsm_follower Jul 23 '22
My guess is they disabled any iCloud functionality if these were government issued phones. I worked for a large corporation and they issued us iPhones that had any sort of backup or iCloud sharing disabled. They were not even doing any classified work etc. just a paranoid company.
I think the better bet is going to be going through the carrier records with a subpoena/warrant.

This level of corruption means they have to clean house. It is possible for one bad agent to remain unidentified, unquestionably loyal in the eyes of the investigators, and be the mole, the seed of evil in the garden.
1
u/Dumpster_slut69 Jul 23 '22
Text messages and internet messaging have to go through an intermediary service. Was that really wiped? Because texts not on endpoints is one thing but wiping them from the server or telecom is another or the telecom not having a record is insane.
1
1
u/AustinBike Jul 23 '22
Nobody has a smartphone and does not send messages. If they have zero texts then it was WhatsApp or telegram….
1
u/snvoigt Jul 24 '22
“After the issue became public the inspector general launched a criminal investigation into the matter”
So if it didn’t become public information was it just “no harm no foul?”

u/AmericaMasked Jul 25 '22
I’m sure they put trump in the best light. I hope one has trumps code name in it.

"Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, told CNN the agency conducted an eight-hour search Thursday of various internal message systems to try to determine if the January 16 request was sent to the Secret Service. No record of that letter ever reached the Secret Service, he said."
Every person involved has been trained to retain the missing texts as they are government property. Especially important on the 5th and 6th. Such a letdown to stoop this low for a conman.
