UPDATE from a sedition hunter #3. One year out and at least 31 of the 130+ individuals I submitted information on have been arrested. They face over 200 federal charges combined, and three have been convicted or pled guilty. Discussion

One year ago I was watching in horror just like most of you, as sore losers decided to do what they could to larp a revolution and topple our democratic process. How fun!

Being a bit of a psycho myself, and feeling personally attacked, I went to work. I started backing up videos that showed individuals committing coordinated acts of violence. I focused primarily on the West Tunnel brawl for the first week.

By January 15th I had submitted over 50 separate profiles to the FBI. They all included clean shots of faces, timestamped acts of violence, and I cross referenced those against other videos.

When an assault on an officer occurred, I’d work to establish their name and badge number, as well as a timestamp so they could quickly find the footage on their own body cameras.

I admit that I became a bit obsessed, in an unhealthy fashion. But it really felt like the bottom was falling out of the whole country and I wanted to do whatever I could.

I’ve had over a dozen calls with members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Capitol Police, and a few Special Agents around the country. Each have expressed what seemed like genuine gratitude for my efforts. Some have told me “you have literally built the case for me and done my job.”

During the second week after the attack I focused on a two hour long uncut raw video of a man who entered the capitol. I mapped his movements, timestamped his video, and built a model where I could jump to other videos taken in the capitol at the same time to see other angles.

I’m not going to say much about that because I suspect much bigger things to come from that work that involve groups of former military guys with a plan.

I am so saddened, though not shocked, by the tone change from the political right. The night of the 6th I had a moment of hope thinking we might finally come together to root out this rising tide of fascist tendencies. Wrong.

All in all I keep tabs on the cases that are pending and read all the court documents. I sit in anticipation about folks I really want to see have the book thrown at them. I work hard to share updates with my networks, and to keep the conversation about this event alive.

Things to consider:

We’re getting more and more answers by the day about the planning that went into this, the cogs of the machine. It seems to be becoming clear that this was intended as a reichtags fire and that the Trump team wanted to us the national guard to justify invoking the insurrection act.

That would have been magnitudes worse that what we can imagine. I think this article is a must read. https://www.justsecurity.org/79623/crisis-of-command-the-pentagon-the-president-and-january-6/

If and when you meet with people who deny the reality of the 6th, start by asking if they support police? They will say yes. Ask who hurt cops at the capitol, they will say ANTIFA. Ask them if any trump supporters participated in violence. They will say no. Then show them uncut west tunnel footage. Make them watch. Ask where the antifa are. Point them out. Everyone there who has been charged is a proven trumper. They are violently attacking police to gain entry.

They still won’t agree with you. But the seeds of doubt will have been planted and watered.

Don’t let up folks. Don’t let up. Vote Vote Vote. Stump for people who don’t deny reality. Lastly, be decent to each other.

EDIT: Also thanks to the mod team for adding me to your ranks.

EDIT 2: Ah yes, the first person has reported me for being suicidal, must be heading to the front page. Thank you all for the kind words of support.

EDIT 3: a great many people have asked to send me money for my efforts. Thank you, but respectfully, no. I’m doing this out of duty. But, if you are interested in supporting something I support, make a donation to No Kid Hungry Charity navigator in honor of “BOMP” which is an acronym I use for Bring Out More Potential. Thank you kindly.

EDIT 4: HOLY CRAP I woke up this morning to over a dozen messages of folks donating to No Kid Hungry. Over $1,000. Thank you all so much.

Fuck yes! I’m so uplifted to read your post both by your example and your dedication. Thank you.

I’m gonna review some of your other posts and I’m looking forward it!

Why thank you. The other posts are doozies too. Last time I mentioned how many death threats i received and this sub responded by commenting and messaging me tons of life threats, such as

“I HOPE YOU LIVE A HAPPY AND FULFILLED LIFE AND DIE OLD SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE YOU LOVE.”

It was awesome.

Dude, all I can say is that I absolutely admire that you put your efforts towards accountability. I used to do med-legal analysis; I love getting into the weeds and connecting every effing dot. Keep it up and you’ve absolutely got a friend and ally.

You’d really like my folder where I keep everything, the spreadsheets, the photos, the videos, the tips, the replies.

I have a wider moral philosophy in life that people can’t effectively take responsibility (or be held accountable) without first becoming personally aware of the wrongs they have committed. That approach takes patience and compassion, is emotionally draining, and seems counter intuitive. At our core, we’re animals, and we want retribution now. But I propose that a better long term solution is to do the work to allow for the realization of wrong doing, so to drudge the body of hate and break the cycle.

This problem isn’t going away. So I have simply decided to do what I can to root out the wrongs I see. Thanks for your kind words.

u/E_PunnyMous Jan 06 '22

Thank you for the empathy reminder; sounds like we share some core neurosis and motivations. Hearing about a need for compassion from someone who is knee-deep in it was a reminder of someone I used to be. Thanks.

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 06 '22

It’s my duty partner. I was lost before I was found, and it was patient, understanding people who made that possible for me. Humans are inherently persuadable. We love to believe. And de-radicalization is possible but it requires us, the knowing, to be still when loudly confronted.

There was a magnificent interview with Thích Nhât Hanh where he discusses his friendship with MLK. He came with a group of monks to march in solidarity with civil rights markers. Given his groups status, MLK put them right at the front of the march. Soon, fellow protesters become angry with the monks for walking so slowly. His response was essentially “rushing will not speed the awakening of those we seek to liberate.” Went over most of the people’s head, but not mine. It really stuck with me.

If we believe we know the truth, we shouldn’t need to get upset when confronted. We have to first overcome ourselves if we’re going to help others do the same.

Wow - I am so deeply moved by not only the work you've done, but by your wisdom. As someone who recently did the hard work internally to break LOTS of cycles, your words brought me to tears. Thank you again for your efforts, and for being so magnificently you.

150

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 06 '22

I am immensely grateful for your reply. Breaking cycles is tough as fuck. I did 6 years of youth mental health crisis intervention work because when I was a child, and I had a crisis, I had a support system that hoisted me up and never once shamed me. To know other kids had been through so much worse without that structure made me feel hella guilty. So I did that work.

My very first day I was stabbed with a fork during a clients dissociative breakdown. It was so deeply jammed into my shoulder I couldn’t pull it out. I deescalated this child and then I gave her the love she deserved. All of this with a fork sticking out of my shoulder.

When she saw it she realized she had done it and burst into tears. I assured her that nothing she could do to me would erase my compassion for her. We were buddies from that day on.

I’m not saying this as a humble/not so humble brag. I’m saying it to showcase to whoever is reading this that if we are going to be on the side of good, we are going to be covered in scars by the end. But the compassion, like the broken skin, will heal back stronger.

Kudos for breaking the cycles in your life. Never stop growing and reflecting and you’ll find fulfillment everywhere you look.

You are so right. I just finished watching today’s speech to come back to your reply. I’m surprised at how emotional I am today.

Sarah Kendzior and Andrea Chalupa have a terrific podcast called “Gaslit Nation”. They’re knowledgeable about Eastern European autocracy and have been sounding the alarm for years now.

I mention them because one thing they said at the start of Trump (and I’m paraphrasing) was to commit your values to written words, because after a period such as the one we are currently in, you may forget who you are. Sounds like you did one better.

Thanks for the boost and the motivation.

I broke down this morning.

In December 2014, my bff (F44) had a life ending stroke in another state on Christmas day. I ran to her state in Hell Texas. I sat by her side through life support removal and all that followed with her fucked up, estranged, prepper mother.

I had to leave for work on January 6th, 2015. I got the call on January 8th, she had died.

It always traumatized me I had to leave before she drew her last breath. January 6th wrecks me as much as the 8th.

Last year, on January 6th, I totally overlooked what I was doing 6 years prior and when I realized that this morning, I don't know why, but I totally broke down.

She would no way believe what has happened since she died. Trump, Covid, and insurrection and her middle son down the rabbit hole. I miss her, but I am glad she wasn't here to see this.

9

u/E_PunnyMous Jan 07 '22 edited Jan 07 '22

Thanks for sharing that. I’m not usually the warm and fuzzy kind of redditor but I’ve been talking a lot about all this with a therapist. It’s great, actually, to know that she shares my national and global concerns. But she disclosed that this is a real thing, this trauma we have gone through and with the great possibility of worse to come, at best a new flowering of liberal democracy as we get our shit together and educate the fuck outta this country. Maybe that would be a good timeline, but it’s a generational one.

My point is we’ve all got that and you’ve got this with you’re bff. I’m sorry for your loss. It comes through you were tight.

They’d forgive you if they knew what kind of hell we’re working through. Explaining Q might require some extra time and proof, because no one from 2014 would believe that. Maybe Ukrainians.

If I can make a suggestion, a small shrine or some meaningful display that lets you focus on them specifically, now that the day has a meaning for everyone?

Good luck.

u/SillyWhabbit Jan 07 '22

The very first card she gave me for a birthday, she signed it: SicknSin Love, Mel. It's tattooed on my inner left wrist and I touch it all the time. I also talk to her under the stars. She is always with me and will remain my BFF even after I die. Death can't stop love. It tries, because suddenly there is no person there to receive it in the same ways she used to be.

I've talked at large to my therapist about the United States of PTSD and the work I do in a grief sub. This Christmas it has been SO heavy. SO many Covid deaths that could have been avoided. I have to allow space for people to grieve be their loved one vaccinated or not, but I draw that freaking line hard at the posts that start out with "The Doctors Killed my Loved one!!! This Virus is fake! Where's the horse paste?!?!?" Followed by "Why did you ban me you lib**** communist?!"

We have also had many talks about deradicalizing people who dig in when presented with truth. I kind of feel like a lot of people who fall down the hole, have been traumatized and it's that trauma that is leading them. I am not sure how you are supposed to make them feel loved and safe enough to create that break, but it's not going to happen with the old school deprogramming since kidnapping is illegal.

Thank you for the kind words.

I’m trying to share that article as much as possible. Trump alone is harmless, he lacks work ethic and follow through. He was dangerous because he empowered driven grifters to do what they pleased. Flynn and Stone are neck deep in this. Their pardons, and Trump and the republican parties subversion of the process of justice directly led to this coup attempt.

The journalist who wrote this did a superb job sourcing the pieces and I suspect that we’re about to see this start to trickle out into the mainstream.

39

u/caul_of_the_void Jan 07 '22

I've seen it argued, and I believe this is true, that his pardons of people like Stone, Flynn, and Bannon owed less to any kind of sense of loyalty and paying them back for what they'd already done, but more that it meant they were then free to do more illegal and immoral things to help him in the future.

And the way it worked out, I'd say that's absolutely what's going on. These people are still out there plotting and scheming. It's all they know, and until they're stopped, that's what they'll continue to do.

12

u/DixieWreckedJedi Jan 07 '22

I think the Stone commutation in particular was mostly issued for purely selfish reasons; Trump’s handlers knew the political optics were atrocious, but Stone knows where the bodies are buried, and is exactly the type of quintessential ratfucker who would squeal to save his own ass, so Trump really had no choice but to take the political hit for the blatantly corrupt commutation of his sentence after Stone coordinated with Wikileaks/Russia and lied to Congress for Trump’s benefit.

24

u/El_Che1 Jan 06 '22

Agreed but also be aware that the monster that Trump appointed as leader of DOJ stated quite plainly that “might equals right”.

7

u/mmmegan6 Jan 07 '22

I hesitate to ask this, but as someone who doesn’t have the emotional or mental bandwidth to read it, would you offer a tl;dr? If you don’t either don’t worry about it.

11

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 07 '22

Tldr: create the space for chaos to occur, call in national guard, keep them there forever for national security.

6

u/Defenestresque Jan 07 '22 edited Jan 07 '22

Very, very few things shock me anymore but that article clearly lays out how close the U.S. was to having military troops in Washington, deciding whose orders they were to follow. It always gives me a jolt when I remember how the outcomes of major historical events end up teetering on the edge until just a tiny handful of people push them to land one way or another.

Edid to add two additional thoughts:

Close observers of the events of Jan. 6 have mainly posited two reasons for the delay in mobilizing the Guard. The first explanation is one of bureaucratic failures or managerial weaknesses in the military’s procedures that day. A second explanation is that the military was deliberately serving Trump’s effort to interfere with the election by withholding assistance.

We identify a third explanation: that senior military officials constrained the mobilization and deployment of the National Guard to avoid injecting federal troops that could have been re-missioned by the President to advance his attempt to hold onto power.

A great reminder that jumping to early conclusions is often not a desirable habit. (For those reading this who have not read the article, it makes a very convincing case for the third option being a strong possibility)

Finally,

According to one account, Trump wanted the military to “beat the fuck out of” Black Lives Matter demonstrators. “Just shoot them,” he apparently told Milley and his Attorney General, William Barr.

The damage this man has done to the office alone is incalculable.

108

u/FiveUpsideDown Jan 06 '22

I think you have given some great advice on how to talk to deniers about Jan 6th.

152

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 06 '22

I’m all about backing people into a logical/cognitive dissonance corner. We have to grapple with the fact that our nation has around 40,000,000 highly dangerous people who are ready for war. They want and crave it, lust for it almost. I believe mass de-radicalization is needed and the government isn’t equipped to handle it. Therefore, decentralizing a proven approach seems to be the best way to approach the problem.

18

u/Big0Benji Jan 07 '22

Good point. What policies do you think are needed to help de-radicalize large swaths of the country?

33

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 07 '22

I wish I knew. Ultimately we need a public education system that works, and a population that knows how to do the most basic fact checks.

We just need more people willing to roll up their sleeves and take responsibility for shit that is not their own. We can all do this in our own ways, but it does take a part of you that you will not get back.

7

u/Disk_Mixerud Jan 07 '22

Or if you're lazy, just pick up some trash as you walk down the street. Doesn't even have to be a lot. Hell, only do it when there's a garbage can within 15' if you're embarrassed to carry garbage with you. Or something, literally anything. Kick some leaves off the storm drain as you walk by before it floods the street. Thousands of people looking out for their community in the smallest ways can make it a lot more pleasant for everybody.

You don't have to be as talented and dedicated as this amazing person to make a difference.

28

u/frollard Jan 06 '22

I'm now trying to envision the most ridiculous possible photogrammetry/motion tracking software (the 3d artists use it all the time to extract camera motion from untracked video)...

Do that with ALL the cell phone video, and you could make a 3d model of the capitol with every camera tracked in real 3d space. Hard part is removing the moving occlusions (people walking) so that the known stable geometry gets tracked.

...then apply that same model and extract every photo from a given moment in time and perform 3d photogrammetry to reconstruct a low-poly 3d scene from individual video frames - different angles of the same 3d spacetime = 3d model...do this for every slice of time, and you have a 3d recreation of the events.

...now I want to learn how to do all the things I just mentioned.

49

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 06 '22

And 30,000 terabytes later you’ve got yourself a model!

I’ll tell you how I did my version of this. I downloaded the publicly available maps of all three floors of the capitol. Then I used the two hour video to establish the entrench used and oriented the map that way. I put a dot on the map every 15 seconds and connected the dots. At one point in this video, the dude walks by a TV and the time is visible in the bottom corner. I then took that time, marked it, and subtracted the run time so far from that time to establish the exact time the video started.

From there I could cross associate videos that happened within that two hour window, and if I saw someone doing something fucked up in one video, I could jump to a video in the direction they moved to get more.

This is also how I got so many clean face photos of masked attackers in the west tunnel. I found one guy who stood outside the tunnel for 25 mins taping everyone who came out. They would get gassed, shift the exhausted front fighters out to the back, and as the exited the tunnel remove their mask. I’d grab that image, the. Go back in time inside the tunnel and match the clothing/tattoos/etc.

28

Feckin' gorgeous. They were good til the finish line.

48

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 07 '22

I didn’t add the best detail. As they exited, eyes running, bruised and beaten, the guy videoing would say “WHAT’S YOUR NAME AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM, PATRIOT??”

And over 15 people answered. I submitted all 15, with loads of info. 13/15 have been arrested already.

I archived it and as I was watching that video, which only had 3 views, I was squealing with delight shouting “you poor stupid bastards. Look at these dumb bastards.” I made my wife come and watch.

There is software out there that can pretty much do that. I can't remember what show/movie had it and it was called Kaleidescope. When I was playing around looking at future and edge tech, a company had that software that partially did this was called Kaleidescope. The software I saw could fill in the blanks if there was a blind spot but would highlight it to show that it was not actual footage. A friend of mine got into 3d courtroom recreations and some of the stuff he was talking about was amazing and that was 15yrs ago. It is kind of like creating a video-game where they have the actors with the pingpong balls on their joints and do motion capture in front of a green screen. I am generally against being a surveillance state like China or Israel but in this case, I am glad that these idiots were surveilling themselves for us.

In Mexican Catholic culture there is a tradition of putting a sponge cake on the casket/body of a recently deceased person. The cake absorbs the sins of that person. The family then pays someone to eat those cakes and thus, take on their sins.

This person is called the Sin Cake Eater. I was a bit of a Sin Cake Eater for jan 6. I took on more than my fair share that day, and the days since. But that’s what we each do sometimes.

Outside of that I’ve directly worked with much, much worse.

16

u/aurora4000 Jan 06 '22

I want to thank you. This was a scary event for US democracy. It was a straight up coup attempt.

The rioters were not patriots - far from it. I'm a member of the DAR, and my ancestor was a real patriot who fought a in Virginia during the Revolutionary War.

I too watched the videos but don't have face matching skills. I did what I could: sharing the FBI wanted postings to my FB and Twitter feeds.

Also this riot/coup was scary for residents of the area. The rioters stayed in hotels and Airbnbs and started fights - especially with people of color - before and days after the protest. Imagine staying inside your home and being afraid to walk your dog because these thugs feel free to come to DC, riot, and start trouble. Living in fear - not cool.

Thanks again.

I have a question if you don't mind.

I found a picture online from the Capitol on Jan 6th 2020 that has a guy in it that I know. I worked with him about a decade ago. I only know his name, I don't know where he lives or works now. I also know the various aliases he goes by based on some stuff he's posted online. It doesn't appear he has a public Facebook anymore, at least not under a name I can find.

What can I do with the information that I do have? This guy was a real piece of shit back then and he's an even bigger piece of shit now for his role in the insurrection.

Edit: I should add, now is a great time to educate yourself on local government and to get involved if you can.

31

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 06 '22

That’s where serving in public office comes in. I did all this because I saw a problem I wasn’t willing to live with and pass by. I applied my skill set (video editing and problem solving) to make a measurable impact. If you don’t like who is running for office, and think you can do better then you should. I’m not saying this to you specifically, but the general “you.” It sucks big time having to confront crisis you didn’t make yourself. But that’s the burden of being an awakened person, ownership and responsibility are about awareness, not causation.

True American hero shit.

Thank you, actual patriot.

I live four blocks from the Capitol and work next door. I’ve always identified as Very left / near anarchist; so much so that I was on a list for YEARS after 9/11. I was here protesting Citizens United and WTO way back when in the 90s in HS and was told I was an alarmist. Same during the 2nd Bush years. Yet here we are. We were sent home from work when the bombs were found that day. I masked up and biked down to the Reflecting Pool. I’ve never been more disgusted. 6 mos earlier I was in the streets for BLM. They came down like a ton of bricks. Disappearing people courtesy of a secret federal force. Dusting with helicopters. Full ammo. I live next to the FBI field office and they had snipers on the roof and took over our whole block w a mobile command unit. Yet here we are with an actual white supremacy coup and we opened the doors. I always knew but WOW. It’s time to embrace the original idea of our nation. We get to choose our own adventure.

No resurfacing. The structure is ROTTEN. The people United, will Never be divided. We can create the world of our dreams. There is no life without healthcare. No Liberty without justice, And no pursuit of happiness when we must work to survive. NO WAR BUT CLASS WAR. I don’t know you. But I love you. We all deserve to THRIVE during our short one way trip on Earth.

I was hoping for a big announcement on this big day, sadly none was had. However I have confidence that the gears of justice are turning slowly but surely, and would much rather have airtight cases against those involved then quick ones that they can worm out of.

I just would like some of them to happen before most of them die of old age, or have the chance to run for office...

I have a relative who is a trauma surgeon. One day she told me that staying calm and fixing a broken human is what her gift is. I am that she is willing to experience extreme violence (she literally cuts people open, amputates limbs) for the good. I figured I could do this.

7

u/DaPamtsMD Jan 07 '22

7

u/sherlock_at_home Sedition Hunter Jan 07 '22

I was arguing with someone on reddit because they felt that 1/6 wasn't planned. I brought up the PowerPoint presentation they made and the person wouldn't google it because "why would I look up something if I don't believe it". I posted a link to an article explaining it and even then they took it with a grain of salt. Then there is the classic "but BLM was bad too".

I'm so tired of people making excuses. It's really frustrating and if the ones in denial won't change their mind even if you shove facts in their face I don't know what else we can do.

How does one help you and JTTF find these people?

Obviously tracking movements of people through videos but how do you know which people have been identified so you're not wasting your time following movements of someone already tracked?

Also, in my mind, I see this 2d floor plan of the capitol with camera movements mapped out, and a user can click the individual camera to see an in person look of video of the events. But then, as you're watching, if another video timestamp overlaps in the same viewing angle, the video goes multi-screen showing you multiple angles of the same area at the same time. I have no idea how to make this but it seems like once the leg work of putting clips into one repository and marking them on the map is done, tracking could be done much more efficiently by anyone at any time.

edit: super rudimentary but like this: https://imgur.com/a/td31NEo Yellow numbered camera is the camera you're following while red numbered cameras are cameras that have timestamp overlaps in the same location. All other cameras would follow the same pattern when viewing. One could then link cameras together by timestamp ie 1, 5, 7, 13 are all on loop 1. Cameras 2, 4, 16, 25 are loop 2. etc etc etc.
