Academic Advice / Planning Is it worth waiting another year to get into Cal Poly Pomona?
I'm a mechanical engineering major and my academic journey has been rough to say the least. I recently applied to transfer from a community college and I'm not too confident in getting into CPP due to my GPA. I applied to other schools and got accepted but it only pushed me to realize that I think I do want to go to CPP.
I'm older too. Turning 30 next year so I can't help but feel like I'm always in a need to rush. But I've read so many good things about CPP. I feel like waiting another year (if I don't get accepted) to fix my grades a little more and maybe even volunteer in engineering clubs would be beneficial. Opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: thanks everyone! I’ll take the school that accepts me and transfer over if anything !

Academic Advice / Planning Gpa suggestion
What gpa should I aim for if I wanna transfer from cc to this school as a cs or accounting major. I'm not from the area I'm from sac.

Academic Advice / Planning How to get info about potential grading error?
According to my class canvas I had a 94 and I got a 96 on the final, but the gradebook says I got a B+? I have no clue why, and I’m not getting any email responses from my prof.

Academic Advice / Planning Final class grade
If I'm at a 69% and you need a 70% to pass the class is it worth me trying to reach out if I can get that score rounded ? 😅 Especially if it's an prerequisite

Academic Advice / Planning Confused on registering
I know it sounds like a stupid question, probably is, but I'm trying to take PHY 1220 & 1220L. I'm in the prerequisites for them (PHY 1210 & 1210L). Would I have to complete these this fall semester then take them next fall semester or can I take them in spring?

Academic Advice / Planning On the verge of failing a lab?
For context I am an EE student taking a lecture/lab for an early major course. I understand the material for the class well, and I am passing the lecture with a solid not-yet-curved A-.
Over the past 2 weeks i’ve been falling behind in the lab because I can’t keep up with the lab homework/reports. They are extremely time consuming and don’t reflect what is going on in the lecture, and while normally I would be able to tough it out, I have missed a couple assignments due to issues in my personal life.
I’ve tried to calculate my final grade (mostly guesswork because only 1 report has been graded this entire semester) and even if I ace every possible report (unlikely) and do all available extra credit, I’ll end up with a mid to low D. This lab is a prereq for every major class that I registered for next semester.
This would be the first time I’ve ever failed a class, what do I do? I don’t think this professor curves, and they don’t really seem like the empathetic type so I’m hesitant on talking with them and explaining my situation, especially because the syllabus says that under no circumstance is late work accepted. Is it rude to just show up to office hours and ask if it’s still possible to pass? I heavily rely on financial aid, so will failing or retaking a course affect it? Should I register for the lab next semester? (the only available section is with the same prof I have now, and ECE classes are notoriously unavailable) Should I just give up on this lab and focus on my other hard classes? Please help 😭

Academic Advice / Planning Upset w/ Registering
I have my registration date for tomorrow and literally almost all the classes I'm gonna take I'm going to be waitlisted for. How can that happen, i can't believe the school can't expect the demand for these classes because EVERY CLASS... I mean it is what it is but I'm hoping they at least open more sections 😔

Academic Advice / Planning PHYS 1510 - Fail Lecture A in Lab
What happens if you fail the Physics 1510 lecture but get an A in the lab? I know that sounds weird but like, I am TERRIFIED for the final exam because I’ve been struggling in the lecture midterms. An A is pretty much secured in the lab.
Do you have to retake both? Or just the lecture? Are the grades combined?

Academic Advice / Planning What do I do?
All of my classes are waitlisted which means I can't sign up for more than 3 and there are no other classes I can take within my major because I need prereqs but those prereq classes are all full. My date barely opened up yesterday and I have been trying to look for a fix but can't find one. I haven't declared my major yet but I have already taken upperdivisions for my major.

Academic Advice / Planning Adding classes
Does anyone know what this means, I keep on getting this when trying to add classes, but I’m only enrolled to 14 units currently and I want to add 3 more.

Academic Advice / Planning Change Majors?
Would it seem super complicated to go from a Construction Engineering and Management major to a Civil Engineering major?
Asking for a friend, and not because I have second doubts....

Academic Advice / Planning Do I Need to Retake my PreReq??
So after receiving my final grade for CE3140, I ended with a 65% (D). I looked at my courses that requires CE3140 as a prereq and compared it to others and the main difference is that one required a C- or better. Attached is the pictures for reference. I am wondering if my D in CE3140 is good enough and that I can still take 4120 since it only says prereq is CE3140.

Academic Advice / Planning Recent experience wait listing multiple of the same course?
Hi, just wanted to see if another person has experience wait-listing the same course 2 times or more. I'm currently trying to get into senior seminar, so I have it wait listed 3 times (graduate in Summer 2025 as long as I can get seminar, so I didn't get prio. registration). I have read varying reports that you don't get moved up if you're waitlisted in the same class and some that say it works without issue.
I contacted the registar's office and they weren't certain either. Any first hand experiences?

Academic Advice / Planning Applied Math Majors
What subplan course do you recommend? I want to petition to take history of math as I heard many good things about the class! Is there any subplan options you recommend and why? Was it easy or just interesting? (I’ve already completed 4800, 4310, and a 4990 so not those please!)

Academic Advice / Planning Advice for high school senior who just applied here
Hi there,
I just applied to cal poly Pomona. I toured it yesterday, and I really like it. I wanted to ask though, when I toured cal poly slo, it almost seemed like they knew they were, well yanno, cal poly slo. At cal poly Pomona I got a really chill, laidback, but kind vibe from everyone there.
I wanted to ask, how does the general student attitude, as well as just like the kindness and warm ness of students compare to slo at pomona? How do the schools differ?
Thanks so much

Academic Advice / Planning Too hard for one semester?
I'm an ok student but am trying to be careful to not overload myself. Next semester I am taking the following classes but thinking it could be too much? Does this seem like a difficult courseload for one semester? Any of these classes surprisingly hard? Already afraid of Calc 2 (I had to retake Calc 1). Thanks.
- MAT 1150 (Calculus 2 w/ Mihaila)
- PHY 1510 + lab (Newtonian Physics w/ Pan and Kufta)
- ECE 1101 + lab (Elec Circuit Analysis w/ Mortensen)
- ECE 1310 (C for Engineers w/ Rogstad)

Academic Advice / Planning Graduation Cords/Stoles
What kinds of Stoles/Cords can I get from the school? I am not part of any frats/sororities and all I am seeing are Cum Laude cords. Any suggestions of what Cords/Stoles I can currently work toward? I am a Sophomore atm

Academic Advice / Planning Any 1 credit classes?
Is there any 1 credit classes where I don’t even need to show up lol I have 11 units and I plan to keep it that way because they are all my harder core classes so I need genuinely classes where I can dedicate like maybe 1 day out of the week to do work if any. I prefer online classes, even if I have to have a 3 unit but I’ve taken some 3 units online where it’s easy but I still need to put in some effort

Academic Advice / Planning Retaking classes
I’m probably going to fail this one fall 2024 class however my registration for spring 2025 opens monday will I be allowed to enroll in the same class even if I am currently taking it? Or do I have to wait till the end of semester

Academic Advice / Planning Two classes in the same time slot (enrolled/wait listed)?
I'm currently enrolled in a class that is more of a placeholder, but managed to sneak onto the wait list of the class I actually want. Both classes are the same days/times. Obviously I have to drop one before the semester starts, just curious if anyone knows if I need to drop the placeholder now to avoid issues if I get off the wait list or if I can wait to see if I get off the wait list before dropping.

Academic Advice / Planning Will you still be dropped for not meeting a prerequisite after enrolling using a permission code?
I got a permission code to enroll in a class after showing proof that I’ll be completing a pre-requisite during the winter at a CC. However, the CC class ends two days past add/drop. This means I won’t be able to get my final transcript in before I am pretty much locked in the CPP spring class.
I emailed the department (physics and astronomy, btw) about the late end time and they said “it wouldn’t be a problem, you won’t be dropped from a class you enrolled in using a permission number unless you drop it yourself.”
So yes I technically got the OK, but I just want to double check if anyone has had a similar experience and if I have nothing to worry about. I just don’t want to be surprised if it turns out I am not safe, am dropped over the break, and have to scramble to enroll somewhere else/add more classes to keep my full time status.

Academic Advice / Planning If I take a pre-req during winter that ends after spring add/drop, can I still register for next semester?
Basically as the title says. I'm planning on taking a pre-requisite at a community college during winter intersession and asking for a permission code so that I can still register for classes it's for next semester. However, add/drop for CPP ends way before I can even get my final grade for winter. Will I be dropped for this next semester?
