All AP Voter Ballots - Week 14 Analysis

Week 14

This is a series I've now been doing for 10 years. The post attempts to visualize all AP Poll ballots in a single image. Additionally it sorts each AP voter by similarity to the group. Notably, this is not a measure of how "good" a voter is, just how consistent they are with the group. Especially preseason, having a diversity of opinions and ranking styles is advantageous to having a true consensus poll. Polls tend to coalesce towards each other as the season goes on.

Joe Arruda did not vote this week, so we had 61 ballots. The AP has been having issues with the back end of their data, so it's getting a bit harder to get voter data. I e-mailed them and they said they're aware of the issue, but have no timetable for a fix.

Kayla Anderson was the most consistent voter this week. Michael Katz is the most consistent voter on the season, followed by Kayla Anderson, Blair Kerkhoff, Matt Murschel, and Trevor Hass in the top 5.

Stephen Means was the biggest outlier again this week. Jon Wilner is the biggest outlier this season, followed by Stephen Means, Koki Riley, Chris Murray, and David Jablonski.

Dave Preston had ASU only going up 1 spot lmfao, what is he smoking

33

u/Beneficial_Present29 Arizona State • Tennessee Nov 25 '24

He also has BYU 9 spots above ASU too

12

u/BradyGalaxy Arizona State Sun Devils • Big 12 Nov 25 '24

No way lmao, I didn’t even see that

He has to be trolling

11

u/Beneficial_Present29 Arizona State • Tennessee Nov 25 '24

It's not the first time. Last week Jerry Humphrey had Kansas State ranked but not ASU

3

u/CrowIsNotMyPresident Arizona State Sun Devils • Utah Utes Nov 25 '24

If he had actually seen the result of the game and ranked us appropriately and a few more votes had gone our way, we'd be ranked higher than Alabama.

35

u/Lefunnymaymays4lief Notre Dame • Vanderbilt Nov 24 '24

The fuck is your problem Dave Preston?

8

u/BradyGalaxy Arizona State Sun Devils • Big 12 Nov 25 '24

Dave Preston has to be trolling lmfao

4

u/JayMerlyn Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Team Chaos Nov 24 '24

He's actually not been that bad, outside of these past three weeks.

Brian Fonseca, on the other hand, has been doing this for over a year now.

5

u/Slyasaurus Texas A&M Aggies Nov 25 '24

Boise at four is wild. Sure you could argue about SOS for Notre Dame, but Boise hasn’t really faced anyone (outside of Oregon).

3

u/SabbathBoiseSabbath Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

Way wild. 8-11 is acceptable range. Everything above or below is silly.

2

u/CrowIsNotMyPresident Arizona State Sun Devils • Utah Utes Nov 25 '24

He has BYU at 12 and ASU at 20. WTF

2

u/TailgateLegend Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

Idk, but I kinda like that guy.

Yeah it’s fully broken on mobile

That’s not bc the link. It’s a mobile issue, for over a week links I click on Reddit haven’t been loading

1

This one was the link. I could click on the previous weeks, just not this one

My bad! Fixed.

20

u/esc_cynicism Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

The 2 people who put Boise at 4 on their ballot did not see the same game I did yesterday💀

4

u/SabbathBoiseSabbath Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

Same for those who have us at 15.

5

u/WebfootTroll Oregon Ducks • Team Chaos Nov 25 '24

I'd argue they did see last night's game, but maybe not some others.

2

u/TheBiggestHug Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

The only thing I can think is they are using the rankings as seeds? Which is dumb.

1

u/ChickenFajita007 Oregon Ducks Nov 25 '24

I attempted to watch Pat McAfee's show talking about CFB, but he was going on and on about how the committee shouldn't rank teams, but just put out their bracket each week.

sigh, nothing but sigh...

ESPN's fixation on the bracket is confusing their own employees, and apparently sports writers too.

35

u/Shellshock1122 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Nov 24 '24

you could tell Jon Wilner def didn't get enough attention growing up based on these weekly threads

14

u/bruggibuster Oregon Ducks Nov 24 '24

He’s a total clown

5

u/Terrorstaat Texas Longhorns Nov 25 '24

You can tell he hasn’t been hugged by his parents

-12

u/Promethiant Florida State • Auburn Nov 25 '24

He has Texas ranked lower than everyone else, which is objectively the worst team in the top 12 right now, so I trust his opinion.

17

u/easchner Texas Longhorns Nov 25 '24

He has Alabama at 9?

39

u/DouglasDauntless South Carolina Gamecocks Nov 24 '24

So what exactly is the justification for Stephen Means getting to vote if all he cares about is using it for social media engagement and doesn’t actually give af about the poll itself

6

u/outthawazoo South Carolina • 日本大学 (Nihon) Nov 25 '24

What a clown

-3

u/Drewbdu Ohio State • North Carolina Nov 25 '24

Not really sure what’s weird about his ballot? He just uses a resume-based ranking.

It’s the same system Nathan Baird used before him and Doug Lesmerises before that.

3

u/southwoods15 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Nov 25 '24

What resume based ranking would have 8-3 Washington State playing a Mountain West Schedule at #16. He moved them up 5 spots from last week for losing to OSU.

5

u/RealestJP South Carolina Gamecocks • USF Bulls Nov 25 '24

Excluded SC

-13

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '24

Right… so what’s the problem?

12

u/CockCommander15 South Carolina Gamecocks • Sickos Nov 25 '24

Literally every resume based ranking has us top 20 at the lowest. He’s just trolling for clicks.

No serious case to put any 3 loss team ahead of us. CO literally just lost to a below .500 team

6

u/Slaughterpig09 South Carolina Gamecocks • Corndog Nov 25 '24

And he is the only one ranking Wazzu... And it's at 16

9

u/WallsRiy Boise State Broncos • Utah Utes Nov 24 '24

Wilner you fkn prat.

Also someone still has Army top 15.

27

u/Squirrel_Q_Esquire Ole Miss Rebels • Billable Hours Nov 24 '24

Stephen Means has Wazzu at 16 and Ole Miss unranked. I’m not even saying we deserve to be ranked, but we sure as hell are better than Wazzu.

7

u/SabbathBoiseSabbath Boise State Broncos Nov 25 '24

That shit should be disqualifying for these morons.

8

u/LawnNerd229 South Carolina Gamecocks Nov 25 '24

He also has South Carolina unranked as well. What a tool.

23

u/jaybigs Ohio State Buckeyes • Georgia Bulldogs Nov 24 '24

A lot of oddball polls, as always, but I don't know what Brian Fonseca is thinking. How can you put Texas above Ohio State?

He ranked ONE of Texas' wins (Florida) at #25, while ranking TWO of Ohio State's wins (Penn State/Indiana) at #5 and #11. Additionally, Ohio State has their lone 1-point loss is to his #1 team on the road while his #4 team beat Texas at home in a beatdown.

Could have been unanimous #1 and #2 in the AP poll if not for his nonsense lol.

7

u/fidgetee Florida State Seminoles Nov 25 '24

His whole ballot is wild

17

Jon Wilner is smoking some GOOD shit

5

At least he has Oregon 1 and Ohio State 2 unlike Brian from New Jersey

2

Brian from NJ, regular caller on the WFAN Power Hour, right?

19

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '24

I'm now convinced that Beamer fucked Stephen Means' mom or something, because there is zero justification to not rank SC.

6

u/AcadianTraverse Oregon Ducks • Acadia Axemen Nov 25 '24

He had to find a place for... WSU?

5

u/Perryapsis North Dakota State • /r/CFB Bug Fi… Nov 25 '24

South Carolina is one of the low-variance teams this week, too. All 60 of the other voters had you between 12 and 18.

8

u/CowboyBigsby Notre Dame • Indiana Nov 24 '24

I'm convinced Wilner has not watched football at all this season.

7

u/WebfootTroll Oregon Ducks • Team Chaos Nov 25 '24

I think he watched them, the question is what sort of intoxicants is he taking while watching them. Many people ask if he's smoking crack, but I suspect some sort of hallucinogenic. Maybe old-school absinthe mixed with mushroom tea.

5

u/ajszenk Washington State Cougars Nov 25 '24

Lmao WSU at 16?! Means is out of their fucking mind and clearly stopped watching football at about noon yesterday.

4

u/CockCommander15 South Carolina Gamecocks • Sickos Nov 25 '24

What’s the criteria for these guys getting votes? Seems like some of them are just trolling

1

u/bakonydraco Tulane • Boise State Bandwagon Nov 25 '24

Most of the voters cover a journalistic beat that's distributed geographically around the country. A small percentage are national CFB reporters.

12

It’s funny - thinking about the playoffs… I know there’s outliers - and COLLEGE FOOTBALL TALKING HEAD MEDIA IS SO LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS…

But for all the narrative and bitching people seem to be caught up in regarding the playoff…. Just about everyone has basically the same 1-8 in order - OR, OH St, TX, PA St, ND, GA, TN, Miami.

Then everyone basically some combination of SMU, IN, Boise in some order 8-11, and the B12 winner would be 12.

It’s basically completely agreed on as of now (with obviously more weirdness to come next week). Yet talking heads can’t stop screaming about this or that.

I need to stop getting caught up in the whirlwind of nonsense, because there’s surprisingly little debate.

3

u/MultiPass21 Nov 25 '24

John Wilner needs to be assessed for brain trauma.

3

u/Franklins11burner Penn State Nittany Lions Nov 25 '24

He’s voted like this for decades I think at this point. He’s either really oddly committed to this comedy bit or he’s just a zealous wacko. I think it’s the latter, but I’m not 100% certain.

1

u/Tuckboi69 South Carolina • Purdue Nov 29 '24

Stephen Means isn’t even hiding the Big 10 bias. Unranked SC and Ole Miss, Penn State and Notre Dame over Texas.

-4

u/Promethiant Florida State • Auburn Nov 25 '24

Jon Wilner knows what he’s talkin about with that Texas placement.
