Reminds me of the time I went to a garage sale in the country and they had an entire card table of used catalytic converters… legitimately acquired I’m sure

That wouldn't make much sense if we're talking about thefts in our cities. Tweakers/criddlers steal catalytic converters because chop shops want the rare precious metals. They're not being stolen to be sold whole. You could just steal something easier if you were to do that.

Lots of localities and states have implemented rules on businesses that used to buy "used" catalytic converters. It's possible you came across a pile that wasn't allowed to be scraped. Metal places have to get documentation and serial numbers for catalytic converters these days, so the market has died down. Won't anyone think of the criddler junkies?
