Guys with extremely loud vehicles, why do you do this to everyone?

For some guys:

Machine = cool

Big loud machine = more cool

It’s really that simple. It’s not some overcompensation or sign of insecurity just because you find it annoying lol

u/MagicDragon212 1d ago

Yeah I'm not into cars at all, but my fiance and his friends are. The same car I think is annoyingly loud, they will be trying to give thumbs ups and cheering for (none of them have loud cars).

On the other hand, they will clown on a car that's loud just to be loud. Usually this is if they don't have a muffler or some shit. That's comparable to putting cards in your bike wheel to go brrrrr. They want the loudness to represent a powerful engine.

u/TheFlyingBogey 1d ago edited 1d ago

Literally this, I don't see why people can't fathom that There *are** different groups of people with varying levels of 'loud' car which get lumped together which I understand.

I have a car which is somewhat louder, but growls a little when I put my foot down. It's quiet enough when I need it to be (parking up, driving through residential areas etc) but if I'm on the motorway, I can get a loud sound when I accelerate.

That loud noise for whatever reason releases some happy chems in my brain.

I am fully aware that not everyone (spoiler: most people) aren't fazed or even dislike it, but it isn't for them.

All of that said though, I do my best to be considerate because I am aware that my car can be obnoxious.

Edit to tack on: I'm not disputing that there are a lot of idiots who straight pipe the bottom of their old Corsa and think that they're the shit for driving what sounds like a tractor having a seizure. Folks like me and people like that however are not the same. I get the confusion though.

37

u/Alternative-Sock-444 1d ago

Same here. Car guys like to hear their cars. Assholes just like to be loud. My shit is loud if I get on it, so if I'm in a residential area, I just accelerate gently so as not to annoy people. But there are always assholes in any enthusiast group.

3

u/SaintGloopyNoops 1d ago

What kind of car? I love muscle cars. So just curious.

2

u/Alternative-Sock-444 1d ago

Not a muscle car lol. A fully deleted and straight piped diesel BMW X5. It's mostly just turbo whistle while cruising, but under load it gets pretty rowdy.

2

u/SaintGloopyNoops 1d ago

Ok. So it sounds exactly how it's supposed to sound because it has the power to back it up. Sweet car, btw. My uncle had a 2000 or 2001 model. They can get rowdy. Lol.

4

u/Alternative-Sock-444 1d ago

Yeah without the sound, being a diesel, it also wouldn't have the power. That engine really doesn't like a restricted exhaust. And thanks! I've owned a couple early 2000s BMWs as well. Always fun cars

4

u/Shawnessy 1d ago

Same. I'll coast at the highest gear I can without lugging the motor through residential areas. I'll stay below 3K RPM and try not to build too much boost when I'm in town. There's no drone, and you can hold a conversation in a normal tone inside. But, I also have the option to stay in the power band, full boost, with the exhaust screaming down the back roads if I want to. Even then, it's not even close to as loud as the straight piped boys that everyone fuckin hates.

2

u/Alternative-Sock-444 1d ago

I hate loud cars too, when it's a true, straight duals, 06 squatted Silverado, or a clapped 90s civic with a pep boys special fart can on it. If a Huracan or similar cruises by, I ain't gonna be mad about it. There's a difference between loud and obnoxious, and loud but tuned to be so.

1

u/lrherman 1d ago

Exactly!

1

u/heyitsvonage 1d ago

This is it right here

5

u/SaintGloopyNoops 1d ago

What kind of car? My neighbor has a honda Sedan. He put a fart attachment to make it loud. It's stupid, and i hate it. Now, if it was 1970 Chevelle, I wouldn't be annoyed by the noise bc, at the very least, I get to look at a sweet ride.

2

u/TheFlyingBogey 1d ago

I drive an Abarth 124 but it's not straight-piped as some of them are, so it has a degree of muffling before the back pipe grumbles out.

I agree with that sentiment though; something about hearing a car like that, it has to at least look like it should make the racket it's making.

2

u/jesbiil 1d ago

I ride motorcycles, like motorcycle engines and their sound, it releases something happy in me....that said I do not like when I have to wear ear plugs due to the engine noise. I wear plugs on the highway due to wind-noise just over certain speeds it gets loud but some bikes like 30mph is too loud. Actually put exhausts on to quiet my bikes these days, straight-thru sounds good for a few minutes and feels fun to get more power but gets tiring quickly.

Also to me, I've noticed that engine noise in my brain kinda correlates to speed, when my 250cc bike is running at 65mph it feels like it's going fast as hell as the engine is screaming, my 800cc bike is quietly cruising at 65mph.

2

u/Polterghost 1d ago

Just remember there’s a group of people EVERYONE here is forgetting:

Those of us who don’t give a shit if you have a loud car/truck or not. The sound enters in one ear and out the other, and no judgement is passed onto the driver one way or the other. We’re not impressed, but we’re not annoyed either. Definitely not full-blown, fuming angry like some in this thread. We just don’t care.

I think a majority of people fall into this group, but I could be wrong.

Drive whatever you want, however you want. Just drive safe and we’re all good.

1

u/could_use_a_snack 1d ago

but it isn't for them.

But we don't get a choice. You like your loud car, fine, but I don't like the fact the your fun disrupts my peace. You want to make a bunch of noise somewhere I can't hear it? Go ahead, why should I have to listen to it if it's not for me?

It's the same problem we had with smokers, they have the right to smoke, but why shouldn't I have the right to breath smoke free air? That smoke isn't contained in your lungs, and that car noise isn't contained in your ears.

I appreciate that you seem to be considerate about it, just as I did when people were considerate smokers. But not everyone is, so you get painted with the same brush.

3

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

The world does not revolve around you.

-1

u/could_use_a_snack 1d ago

Exactly. Good manners is something that everyone should learn. If something you do creates a situation that others can't avoid then you should be the one to avoid creating that situation. Basically accept the fact that the world doesn't revolve around you. Be considerate of others.

2

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Okay, then accept that me and millions of other people like me are going to drive something that makes us happy. The world doesn't revolve around you.

1

u/could_use_a_snack 1d ago

And that fine, as long as you are considerate about it and don't go blowing through my quiet neighborhood at 2am, or the like, waking everyone up.

1

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Agreed, but half of the people here are complaining that loud cars exist in general. The only people doing that are teenagers, or someone in an emergency that didn't have another vehicle to take.

0

u/could_use_a_snack 1d ago

half of the people here are complaining that loud cars exist in general

Sure, but they wouldn't be complaining if the people, like yourself, we considerate about it. I doubt any of these "complainers" would tell people at a monster truck rally they their vehicles are too loud. It's all about context. There is a time an place for loud cars, trucks, etc. but it's not on a residential street with people trying to enjoy their backyard BBQ.

1

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

It is if it's daylight enough to be having a backyard barbecue. You, nor anyone else here, are the arbiters of what anyone else drives or how they drive it. That's life.

u/EvilTables 1d ago

They should be illegal for street use. It's noise pollution. If you like loud noises, put on headphones or go somewhere no one can be bothered.

1

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Christmas music should be illegal. It's noise pollution.

0

u/EvilTables 1d ago

Blasting music in public places, yes

1

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Yeah man, we should have decibel readers on every street corner, and we should arrest anyone that ever goes over the limit. Now we live in a perfect world. I'm glad you solved it.

3

u/Galaxymicah 1d ago

I own a sleeper for a daily driver for that reason though. Cause I don't wanna rip off through residential areas but can still get rowdy  when the situation calls for it.

There ain't no reason to hit your limiter at a stop sign at 4 am. Idgaf how much you love it there's a time and place. Residentials are never it and that's coming from a car guy.

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

Wholeheartedly agree

10

u/FarmKid55 1d ago

Seriously, personally I just love hearing V8s roar. I grew up on a farm and lived in a house that had a huge V8 irrigation power unit screaming from a quarter mile away. I loved listening to it on the porch. There was no one for miles around to impress. Still can hear it actually lol

2

u/Toenen 1d ago

Yeah it’s so comforting to me. Just don’t open up in residential and in city areas. On a highway for a sec just to hear a road? I put up with everyone else’s bull shit all day they can deal with mine for half a sec. Not gonna not enjoy my stuff. Just don’t be an asshole is what we should really be looking for. Cause just like any hobby there are people who ruin it for everyone.

3

u/FarmKid55 1d ago

Yeah for sure, it’s just silly how many comments are that it’s purely about compensating lol

20

u/-1701- 1d ago

I think this is the right answer, much of the time. I remember being young and thinking this and it never once occurred to me what other people might think.

-1

u/schubial 1d ago

Exactly. Guys with vehicles like this haven't matured emotionally beyond the level of a 12-year-old to understand that how their actions impact others matters. Like, even if you think it is cool, why is it worth annoying hundreds of people every time you drive to feel cool? I feel like if these people realized how others are actually perceiving them, they wouldn't feel cool anymore, but again, they have no emotional intelligence.

-2

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

So is that complete lack of spatial and social awareness learned behaviour, genetic, or too much lead in the water?

6

u/-1701- 1d ago

Lack of maturity and a social environment that doesn’t foster it. That was the case for me.

-6

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

Fascinating. I'd file that under learned behaviour, or lack thereof more accurately.

-6

u/DonnieG3 1d ago

Its not even a lack of awareness. I am aware that people might not like the noise, I just genuinely dont care. I put up with listening to normal people do stupid shit all the time, this is my stupid shit. Be as accepting of me as I am of you. Its really not that complex.

The only time I care about what other people think about the noise level of my car is the inspector to make sure it passes legal limits so I can continue to enjoy it. Past that, other peoples opinions matter zero

2

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 1d ago

put up with listening to normal people do stupid shit all the time

Like?

-1

u/DonnieG3 1d ago

Generally? Existing. People are dumb and annoying. Specifically? Those people that freak out over something that has nothing to do with them. Real HOA Karen types who let things like 5 seconds of noise ruin their lives and cause them to push their weird psych issues onto others.

1

u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 1d ago

That.... That's not comparable?

I can't just walk away when a pack of Harley drives comes through the street, you can just scroll past this post

0

u/DonnieG3 1d ago

Sure you can. The same way I'd laugh at people freaking out because it doesn't affect me at all, you could laugh at Harley dudes and move on with your day, thinking nothing of it.

0

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

The question was directed at people that didn't realise they were being assholes. In your case, you're fully aware of it so, I'd file that under lead poisoning.

-6

u/der_innkeeper 1d ago

It's usually genetic. "Self, first" otherwise we don't survive long enough to breed.

Spatial and social awareness are learned.

0

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

I think that only partially makes sense. If it was a genetic survival imperative, you'd think they'd be more conscious of the noise they're making. Prey animals understand the spatial/auditory link between making too much noise and getting eaten by a predator.

2

u/Kronuk 1d ago

You think humans are prey animals? We are apex predators. In this case, i would consider the loud car to be an example of a predator making noise. It’s a form of power. A statement to the world of fearing no one.

1

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

I wasn't suggesting humans are prey animals, It was just an example. There are also examples of predators understanding the relationship between making less noise and successfully ambushing prey.

-2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Rikey_Doodle 1d ago

It was just an example. It holds true for predators as well. They understand the relationship between making less noise and successfully surprising prey.

4

u/jbaker1225 1d ago

Machine = cool
Big loud machine = more cool

So the answer is Idiocracy.

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

Well there are some people who think only idiots enjoy sports.

There are some people who think only virgin losers enjoy video games.

How do you feel about these opinions? Because you’re essentially doing the same thing, but to car guys.

12

u/anarchyx34 1d ago

There are absolutely some people who do it for attention more than just because they like how it sounds.

-6

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Projection

2

u/anarchyx34 1d ago

My car is bone stock so whatever. You can’t tell me someone with straight pipes and a crackle tune slow rolling through an urban outdoor dining area while bouncing off the limiter isn’t doing it for attention.

0

u/sleepyinbk 1d ago

sure. You've never seen some chode roll coal and then pop his head out the window like he's hot shit?

4

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Rolling coal is entirely different from just a loud exhaust. There's mods the rest of us don't like too. Rolling coal and squatted trucks are stupid as fuck lmao

2

u/sleepyinbk 1d ago

Yeah but who do you think the average person has in mind when they think loud vehicle? Some chode with a loud exhaust, rolling coal. Y'all get lumped in with those motherfuckers.

-2

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Yeah. Don't care. It's not for you, it's for me.

2

u/sleepyinbk 1d ago

Whatever. Shit doesn't bother me unless they're also rolling coal. A loud truck is just a truck

2

u/clevermotherfucker 1d ago

i think quiet small machine that does big stuff = more cool

but maybe that’s just cause i like electronics like phones or pc’s

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

Hey, I said “some guys”

13

u/drho89 1d ago

Holy shit the real answer is actually posted.

Sadly, you’ll get no karma because it doesn’t conform to the circle jerk that is Reddit.

13

u/Shady_Lamp_Post 1d ago

IKR? Most of the car guys are giving actual answers while a pretty decent chunk of the people who find it annoying are just replying with ad hominem arguments. Obviously, roaring through a residential area with an obnoxiously loud car isn’t a good idea, but it seems like some of these people just hate loud cars in general. Like christ, maybe learn to live and let live?

1

u/heyitsvonage 1d ago

As a man who loves cars yet drives a stock Honda, reading the replies here has been hilarious.

-2

u/seacrestfan85 1d ago

Whatever you say baby dick

-11

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

2

u/drho89 1d ago

Gross dude. wtf is wrong with you. Get help

3

u/bisikletci 1d ago

It’s not some overcompensation or sign of insecurity just because you find it annoying lol

I don't care if, or especially think that, it's overcompensation or a sign of insecurity. The issue is that it's obnoxious as hell and a clear sign of being an entitled prick.

1

u/cloudforested 1d ago

It might not be conscious compensation, but it is certainly unconscious compensation.

3

u/bennydapintdrinker 1d ago

In high school my brother had an old impala slammed to the floor, straight piped, cold air intake, all the works.

He is the most humble, unassuming person I know.

He just really likes cars. That’s usually the extent of it.

2

u/Toenen 1d ago

Yep pretty simple.

6

u/KnowledgeIsDangerous 1d ago

It’s called “being a selfish prick” nothing complicated

-4

u/Toenen 1d ago

Your life might be worth living if you were as selfish as this guy.

2

u/akjax 1d ago

I bought a classic car and it came with a very loud aftermarket exhaust.

I have to admit I like it. I think it sounds awesome.

That said, it's not a daily driver and I'd never take it out in the early morning or late night.

2

u/kuroimakina 1d ago

Oh it’s definitely for many people that simple. That doesn’t make it acceptable though.

If I thought it was cool to blast bagpipes at absolute max volume, or blast airhorns all the time, etc - people would look at me like I’m a dick (as they should.)

But as soon as it’s car guys, suddenly they should get a pass for making a shitload of noise?

It doesn’t matter what the source of that noise is - whether it’s a car or an air raid siren - if you have actual control over the thing making the noise and you’re making that noise intentionally around other people who didn’t ask for it, you’re a dick. The end. Your thought process is irrelevant to the equation.

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

I didn’t say assholes aren’t still assholes.

But there’s a difference between people enjoying their hobby, and people who are intentionally trying to get attention and bother others.

But all the non-gearheads here seem to be dying to lump both groups together.

3

u/------____-------- 1d ago

Hrrr drrrr big loud machine cool for 8 year old like me👦🏻

1

u/ItchyAge3135 1d ago

It’s those things and a blatant disregard for the people around you. That’s why it’s obnoxious.

1

u/sourband 1d ago

Right? I drive a loud car and every time I hear another loud car I get excited and check it out as it drives by. It is funny when someone has a base model commuter car straight piped but I know they're having fun either way.

-3

u/mom_with_an_attitude 1d ago

I think there may be a bit more to the equation.

Machine = cool

Big loud machine = more cool

Me driving big loud cool machine = I cool

I cool = maybe girl give me sex now

2

u/sleepyinbk 1d ago

I think they know that most women find the loud trucks fucking annoying. It's like makeup. Just as much for the other girls as obnoxious cars are for the other boys.

1

u/heyitsvonage 1d ago

That’s probably accurate when the subject is a teenager.

1

u/GODZILLA_FLAMEWOLF 1d ago

Is that how you think?

-3

u/EightEnder1 1d ago

Which comes back to they lack confidence in themselves (not cool enough to get sex) and think they need big loud machine to get female attention, in other words, they are overcompensating.

2

u/mom_with_an_attitude 1d ago

Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?

0

u/akillerofjoy 1d ago

Yep, this. I built my exhaust from scratch because I like having bespoke parts, because it was fun, and because I could. That said, I am not a monster, the thing still has both cats, and I made sure to incorporate resonators and mufflers. Is it loud? Not really, not during regular commutes. But when the road opens up, and I step on it, and that bassy growl tickles me in all kinds of ways, reminding me that 400hp may not be all that wild, but still plenty to get me in trouble. Those are the moments which make all that work and time worth it. And in those moments I couldn't give a damn about what some idiot, putting along at 55mph in the left lane, thinks of my car, or me as a person.

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

Before reading all these replies to my comment, I had no idea car guys were hated even more than people who don’t return shopping carts haha

1

u/sleepyinbk 1d ago

right on

0

u/r0botdevil 1d ago

Yeah in many cases it's probably this combined with either an extreme sense of entitlement or a complete lack of social awareness.

1

u/GilbyGlibber 1d ago

And V10/V12-era F1s = some of the coolest

0

u/AchillesDev 1d ago

It’s really that simple. It’s not some overcompensation or sign of insecurity just because you find it annoying lol

Having been on Reddit much longer than I'd like to admit (and longer than this account shows), this will never get through to most of the userbase here.

1

u/heyitsvonage 16h ago

But you get it, and that counts

-1

u/leahyrain 1d ago

I mean it's either insecurities, or it's a blatant lack of respect for people around you. There's not really a third option there.

I'd assume anyone who owns a car who likes how loud it is, would also be completely fine with someone blasting a boombox on the bus or something.

-1

u/dong_tea 1d ago

Nah, being interested in machines and how they work is a respectable hobby, but that is a different type of person. These types are attracted to loud machines the way moths are attracted to lights.

-1

u/Simon_Bongne 1d ago

But muh ragebait!

-9

u/sudoblack 1d ago

95% of you have zero idea how that engine works or what goes into fabricating it. You just have lizard brain, hurka durka loud noise is loud.

10

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

You don't either, because if you did, you'd understand that is indeed the reason people like loud shit.

-6

u/sudoblack 1d ago

I think you're applying your personal reason as an answer, but my argument is that most of them really do it for perceived status and identity when, in fact, it's seen to the actual public as a virus to actaul producing members of society.

4

u/pm_me_ur_burnttoast 1d ago

Your argument is a fabrication of your own projection. You are wrong. This conversation is like asking my dog what it thinks of my clothes. You have no idea what you're talking about.

0

u/sudoblack 1d ago

Same to you... ?

1

u/heyitsvonage 1d ago

You’re just projecting that because you don’t like them haha
