Here is advice for all bladder snails. If you start to get a lot in your tank suddenly, that means you are feeding your fish too much. Less feeding is less breeding for bladder snails. They will eat every single piece of food the fish let go to waste.

This is great advice. Yet another purpose that the noble bladder snail serves.

thank you! i’ve only got one other fish a betta in the tank, and i actually feed my betta 1 at a time to make sure no food gets wasted

Well maybe give the snails a lil treat then, lol

algae wafers okay?

They'll go all in on any kind of green blanched vegetable. So next time you don't want to eat your broccoli, throw them a little slice.

ooo alright thanks :)

Yep maybe half a one. That's big for a snail

Be warned: Bettas are smart. Mine sucks bladder snails out of their shells.

u/mytherical 9d ago

yea i was preparing to set up a backup tank if need be, but now im definitely setting one up because i only have a 5.5 gal tank for my betta and i don’t want it to get too overpopulated :)

Just a lil bladder snail. Congrats on your new hundreds. ;)

2

u/mytherical 10d ago

hahaha thank u, is there anything i should buy for him??

3

u/ahawk65 10d ago

Nah, honestly. They’ll live symbiotically with your other livestock. If you don’t have other fish or shrimp or snails you’re feeding, a pinch of fish food every week or so will keep them well fed. They’ll live off anything.

thank you!

Bladder snail. Harmless algae and detritus eaters. Won't eat healthy plants, and only reproduces heavily if you have a lot of dead plants or overfeed your fish. Good at turning algae and detritus into plant fertilizer.

Self fertilizing hermaphrodites, so you only need one to get a nice little colony started to help keep algae under control.

congrats on the 300 new snails ☺️

u/mytherical 10d ago

im worried lol

u/dandadone_with_life 10d ago

you shouldn't be unless you want to stop the invasion now. but my tank is infested with bladder snails, and besides aesthetics there's nothing wrong with them. i'm sure they're helping out somehow, plus it's kind of entertaining to watch them ascend from the ground to the top like they're being abducted, and walk upside down on the surface of the water.

i don’t want it to be infested because i only have a 5.5 gal, should i set up a new tank and move him and any others to it once it’s cycled?

2

u/dandadone_with_life 9d ago

yep. because one will turn into hundreds in no time at all. eggs take only days to hatch. so if you have one, you have hundreds. if you don't want them in a tank you need to remove any snails and eggs ASAP or they'll become unmanageable in the blink of an eye. i've given up getting rid of them, it's never going to happen.

1

u/mytherical 9d ago

okay, thank you very much

1

u/mytherical 9d ago

what do their eggs look like so i can be sure??

2

u/dandadone_with_life 9d ago

small clear jelly sacs with smaller clearish dots in them. the bigger and more opaque the dots are, the closer they are to hatching.

1

u/mytherical 9d ago

do they have any negative effects on the tank or beta fish? since its a 5.5 gal idk

2

u/dandadone_with_life 9d ago

nope. if anything, they improve the water quality by eating everything that's not poop; leftover food, melted plant leaves, general detritus, etc etc. and they're so small that any waste they produce is negligible and basically canceled out by anything they eat. they'll reproduce to fit the container, it's not like you'll have every surface covered in snails. i've got a ton because it's a 36 gallon but id be shocked if i had more than 200 in there. it just looks like a lot because they converge during feeding. i'm not sure how true it is, but i've heard people have success training their bettas to eat pest snails. you have to crush them against the glass or something and drop them from the top like regular food. eventually the betta will get the message and hunt them. that's the idea anyway.

i see i see.. so in general, i dont really have a lot to worry? like im not gonna have like 1836283782 snails covering every wall because thats how people had me worried. like it’s a 5.5 gallon and the way people were describing it is like every surface would be covered. i’m home now and i see 3, 1 egg 😭

I learned last night that snails like watermelon rind even more than cucumber. My rams and bladders went right past the cuke. You can't see the watermelon rind anymore, it's ridiculous.
