Yeaa this made my day. I took this picture this morning when I woke up at 5AM. I literally bought this for her the day before because she's ready to lay eggs (again) and she couldn't find a good spot so she was starting to get stressed out. unfortunately this is a hybrid fish but oh well she usually eats the eggs she lays after awhile.

that went from awww to oh. real fast.

u/going_mad Apr 02 '20
Well humans sorta do it too with those crazies that eat the placenta after birth

Apr 03 '20
Eh a good amount of mammals eat the afterbirth tbh. Humans are kinda the odd ones out who don’t

Make sure she doesn't get stuck

u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
It's a tight fit where she is but it has wider entrance on the sides. I thought she was stuck when I saw her until I brought out the pellets she came out of it quick

A fish behavior that resonates through our entire community. "I thought it was stuck..." "I couldn't find the fish..." "The fish was acting weird..." until I took out their food, then everything was normal.

I have the same one!! My Pleco lives in it.

u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
Very nice! Yours seems to have a wider top entrance. Where did you get this one?
4
u/PantyPixie Apr 02 '20
Sorry but I don't know. I adopted this tank from a senior about 4 yrs ago and it came with it.
There's a few "broken" areas in the vase that provide different size exits.

I gotta be honest, it's the best feeling in the world when you buy/make something for your tank or to fit a certain fishes needs, and they take to it straight away exactly like you hoped they would.
You feel like such a thoughtful and genorous God.

Blood parrots are my dream fish 😭 she's so precious!!

u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
They're a very unique fish with a whole lot of personality
6
u/zjbrickbrick Apr 02 '20
They really are like water dogs. Mine will race to meet me whenever I come near the tank. I'm sure it's just because of food, but still adorable none the less.
6
u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
Well I don't know about yours but I have three of them and every time I clean their home I get love bites from them <3 I know they're just trying to eat me but oh well.
I also play with them outside the glass. My other cichlids don't do the things this guys be doing.

I was at a fish store yesterday that had a tank of maybe half-dozen of (it looked like) this exact same kind of fish. They all had themselves wedged sideways into various parts of the filtration system. Sooooooo I guess this is normal?
12
u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
That's not ok. This fish are usually very busy. Was the fish tank small?
8
u/Earthling1980 Apr 02 '20
Less than 10 gallons I would say. It was the kinda standard fish store setup where there are fish tanks stacked 5 high and however-many wide.
If it makes you feel better, the parts they were wedged into were wide enough for their body and were made of soft foam.
Oh, and the fish who couldn't fit seemed to be waiting in line for the others to move.

So funny! I just bought my blood parrot the same vase about 3 weeks ago. She wasn't a fan though.

Too cute. I do miss the interactions of keeping Blood. parrots, just not the love bites during tank maintenance 😂

I had always heard as a child that fish can't swim backwards and they would die if they swam into a dead end. Obviously this fish backed into a hole!

Aww so cute! It reminds me of my BP cichlids poking their heads out of their hide!

u/derpinu- Apr 02 '20
7 years ago I found her along with her boyfriend at my local petco poking their little heads out of some decor and I instantly felt in love. They were so small back then.
And I say boyfriend because they're always chilling together since I got them.

u/TheRaptorChicken Apr 02 '20
Aww. Yeah, my cichlid has a boyfriend too. They even tried to have eggs.

How can you tell the genders? I have one and we just take the 50/50 chance and refer to her as a girl.

Aw man... I love this fish. My Petco told me today they cant sell anymore fishes cuz they aren't getting shipments of fishes. I buy a fish when I'm stressed out.
3
u/lajih Apr 03 '20
I'm sorry. I work at a Petco and we've all been going back and forth between "it's not essential and we can't keep social distance in the fish department" and "Sell them. No point in keeping them at the store and they bring a sense of normalcy to these weird days." I'm in the latter group but I'm also galled at how many people just aren't taking this pandemic thing seriously.

If this is where she is staying during quarantine, I’m not gonna be surprised.
PS: what is the species?

I have this same vase. My crayfish thinks it is her throne and never goes inside - only sits on top to survey her domain.

Ik this was four years ago but what’s this fish called? Me and my brother maid “friends” with one of these guys at an aquarium. He would follow our hands then swim back to his little hide when he strayed too far. Probably just defending his territory or something idk. Named him golden apple.

That fish definitely has claustrophobic edit: I thought you put the fish in that with no water😂
4
u/larki18 Apr 02 '20
More like the opposite of claustrophobia
-1
u/HazzTheSpazZ Apr 02 '20
Do you know what claustrophobia means?
4
u/larki18 Apr 02 '20
Do you? She's deliberately choosing to be in a small, confined space. Obviously not at all afraid of them.
