Got rid of all our female snails Invert

Now our 12 remaining boy snails just hump each other in these orgy balls all day long.
I should say it was an accident that we got rid of the females. We had a population explosion and gifted away 50 snails… and only kept boys. Sigh.

How could you tell which were male or female?

I have absolutely no idea, but if anyone knows…

Snails are hermaphrodite, so unless you get rid of all but one, they'll keep on mating.

The majority of aquatic snails kept as pets are actually gonochoric. Only 3 of the most common species are hermaphrodites.

Mystery snails like these are male or female. Males will try to breed with any other snail that is large enough to get a grip on (they'll just crawl over pest snails but harass rabbit or other mystery).

Look up the shell on their right side (your left), if there's a penis sheath you've got a male. If nothing really visible then female.

Snails are intersex

Intersex is not the state of a species, you mean hermaphrodite. Only a few of the commonly kept aquatic snails are hermaphrodites, all the rest are gonochoric like humans.
Intersex = 1 individual that doesn't match the species typical setups. The majority are infertile and they cannot use both sets of reproductive organs.
Hermaphrodite = default sex for the entire species, has both reproductive organs. May not be able to use them at the same time, some species (sequential hermaphrodites) need to shift over to using the other set over a period of time and can only do that once in their lives. Simultaneous hermaphrodites can use both organs at the same time.
