I always thought you shouldn't touch fish. Can damage them.

I was always told it can remove their mucosal coating making them susceptible to infections/parasites/disease.

It can if your hand is dry if your hand is wet the damage is mitigated. Also it depends on the force you use.

Introducing foreign bacteria whilst removing slime coating is the equivalent of removing your skin and rubbing dirt in it.
