Almost one year later, our silly lesbian angelfish couple still haven’t realised they can’t have babies Cichlid

u/iamnotstephanie Mar 25 '23
Ok hear me out... Buy a baby for them

u/vulvasoutforharambe Mar 25 '23
Maybe start with a puppy first.

I want to downvote this because now the bubble guppies jingle is in my head and will be for a week. I thought I was past this 🥲

Awww they are both too cute. My angelfish pair keeps laying babies but momma isn't that smart and eats the fertile eggs and gets sad over the infertile not hatching.
She also seems to think that the baby bristlenoses are her babies.
82
u/CelluxTheDuctTape Mar 26 '23
She decided that if she can't have kids of her own, she's gonna adopt some
70
u/_Play_with_Dolls_ Mar 26 '23
It is honestly the cutest thing I've seen. My male understands they are not their kids and used to guard their eggs from them but it made her unhappy. so he now just guides them away by putting himself between. They now are allowed to sleep in their den too.
She is one of the silliest fish I have ever owned and the friendliest cichlid I have ever seen. He is one of the smartest fish I've owned. He is very adaptive and picks up behaviors and routines very quickly too.

u/Butterflyelle Mar 26 '23
This made me miss my psychotic lot. They're such emotional fish and such characters 😅. You've no way of knowing if you're going to get a fish with a heart of gold or a psychotic murder triangle
6
u/Randommcrandomface2 Apr 03 '23
Psychotic murder triangle is possibly the best band name I’ve ever heard

u/_Play_with_Dolls_ Mar 26 '23
I love it! My male is a shy feisty chicken and my girl is a silly friendly beggar.

u/kay_bizzle Mar 26 '23
Oh my God, they're tank mates!

I had a pair that paired off and would constantly lay eggs. I rehomed them to a couple who thought they'd breed viable eggs lol (they were getting way too aggressive for the other fish on the tank)
273
u/Tater_tit Mar 25 '23
Will females actually pair off with each other and protect the unfertilized eggs?? If so that’s really interesting! Go lesbians :)
384
u/petermeansweiner Mar 25 '23
If I have learned anything in this hobby, fish can and will do whatever the hell they want.
I’ve got a convict that keeps trying to pair off with a pictus cat that has no interest.
115
u/Breadloafs Mar 26 '23
My old convicts had 2 (two) priorities:
1.) Fight the gravel vacuum
2.) Court anything and everything
24
u/lilsalmonella Mar 26 '23
My betta has a crush on my mug. Every time I put this specific mug near him, he displays for it and builds a bubble nest right in front of it.

It's an outdated snense (snail sense) of internet humor that I appreciate still.
Just to emphasize the point I guess?

I have a male and female platy who are absolutely DEVOTED to each other. The male has absolutely no interest in any other females and if he spends to much time away from “home,” she comes out looking for him.
133
u/nicolettejiggalette Mar 25 '23
My male adult tuxedo platy is following around a 2 month old female balloon molly. He’s a creep.
97
u/PhunkyPterodactyl Mar 26 '23
I’ve seen one of my male guppies routinely try to flirt with a snail and one of my platies. Fish are weird, man.
56
u/angwilwileth Mar 26 '23
To be fair male guppies will display for anything. I saw one do it to a plant i guess he found particularly sexy.

11
u/Dear-Unit1666 Mar 26 '23
A snail is a new one for me 😂 I have seen them get confused by other fish, and noticed their flirting is different based on whether it's a male or female, seems like it's more than just mating to me.
37
u/KP_Wrath Mar 26 '23
I used to have a fish by the name of Matt Gaetz for the same reason. Alas the guppy short lifespan claimed him.

u/blueoysterguy Mar 26 '23
My boss told me about how she used to have a male betta that was “in love” with a fair prize goldfish that she kept him with, said the goldfish was about twice his size. When she died my boss got a different goldfish, and though the betta didn’t “love” that one, she said they were friends. I was a little skeptical, but if a convict can try to court a pictus cat, maybe it’s not so strange.

u/irrlich Mar 26 '23
Reminds me of when I was breeding guppies. I had bought two very nicely coloured snakeskin males to breed to my females. 2 months later I still had no gravid females or fry, so I sat down to properly observe the tank. Turns out the two males were only interested in each other. A pair of monogamous gay guppies. The females were the most relaxed females I've ever had though ;
I've also had male guppies try to mate with a rather grumpy female betta in a community tank. That did not end well.
15
u/teddirez Mar 26 '23
I was told by my lfs that convicts mate for life. My male who proceeded to eat his mate after their first lot of babies had grown then ultimately ended up with one of his daughters. We call him Bateman, cuz he's clearly a psycho.
12
u/Azu_Creates Mar 26 '23
I’m pretty sure a few of my make guppies we’re trying to mate with a male endler, they kept nipping at the poor guy’s bits.
14
u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 Mar 26 '23 edited Mar 26 '23
Guppies are incredibly frisky. Mine mostly harass my female platies, but will occasionally spare some time for my male platies or other male guppies.

u/SpookyNoodz Mar 26 '23
I've learned that convict cichlids are the horniest meanest bastard fish in the hobby. I have no doubt that the pictus is just tired from the convicts constant haranguing. Why this doesn't surprise me is beyond me.
11
u/Havoccity Mar 26 '23
I had a male black molly that would go to town trying to stick his pp up the anus of a rainbow shark three times his size 24/7. I eventually had to remove the molly when the shark’s health started noticeably deteriorating.
3
u/petermeansweiner Mar 26 '23
I have more cichlids coming on Thursday to help dull out the aggression. Nothing the convict can actually breed with though lol.
1
u/Havoccity Mar 26 '23
Convicts can breed with almost any new world cichlids though
1
u/petermeansweiner Mar 27 '23
Allegedly there isn’t much hybridization between Central American (convicts) and South American cichlids, I’ve got a blue acara coming in and plan on picking up another from my LFS on the same day.
I’ve got room in the tank for an oscar, but I’m afraid it’ll outgrow the smaller guys, so I may go for a black angel or something similar sized and more peaceful.

u/boring_sciencer Mar 26 '23
My ducks do this. They have lesbian sex & go into nesting mode. They protect the nest as if they will one day hatch, screaming at & chasing me if I go too near the nest.
62
u/lowrcase Mar 26 '23
Lesbian duck sex must be a lot more wholesome than hetero duck sex. Maybe they’ve got it all figured out
10
u/LeoFoster64 Mar 26 '23
As a child we had lesbian ducks. Butch duck was not nice to femme duck during mating and she came away with a bloody head a few times from being held down. But Butch duck was very protective over her lady, who really only knew how to eat and be pretty lol
26
u/croaking_gourami Mar 26 '23
Fish don't seem to care too much about who thwir partners are. Its mainly with the same species and with th3 opposite sex, but somet8mes they're just random.
E.g
- My betta trying to mate with a rock and then his filter
- My male guppy trying to mate with my large papered corydora female
13
u/Crabby_AU Mar 26 '23
Lol, I’ve never heard someone cheer for a sexual preference like a football team - “Go lesbians!”

All angel fish are sex addicts, if I get more than 3 I end up with a sexpocalypse because someone is trying to have babies and everyone else needs to die

I mean in this case no it does not because they’re infertile, but animals aren’t people there’s no lesbian or gay they just are fish vibing
Edit: for the love of god, read my other comment. Fish don’t have a conscience for social norms they just vibe

36
u/crystalized-feather Mar 26 '23
You guys took that the wrong way. I l know they can be homosexual, I mean there is no social norms telling them what to do and they aren’t aware of what they’re doing they’re just living life doing whatever they want

This reminds me of my blood parrots, they try every so often to lay eggs but they're sterile due to being hybrids... the eggs do make a nice snack for my angelfish though

Some fish species can change from female to male to mate and have babies.
With those, buying a school of females without any males won't stop them from breeding.
2
u/vermillionhearts Mar 27 '23
omg, this is so cute. I have a gay mystery snail LOL. I have 6 snails and only 1 is female. gay snail mounted all the males but never touched the female. I'm a gay human with a gay pet snail and I love it 👍👍

I have the exact same thing going on with my angel fish of the same color - maybe we need to set up a play date

I had a pair of femaile erman Blue Rams that did the same - lots off eggs, none hatched.

Dumb angelfish? I thought cichlids were intelligent 😂
2
u/d4rxz Mar 26 '23
They’re not dumb, just silly. We must have forgotten to give them ‘the talk’ when we got them. When a mummy fish and a daddy fish love each other….

u/justafishservant8 Mar 27 '23
"A baby is made. But when 2 mummy fish love each other...it's good ol' love with no babies!"

I had a pair (male and female) that would lay eggs, but I'm pretty sure he was shooting blanks.
She laid eggs 5-6 times, and I'd watch him try to fertilize them, but none of them ever hatched.
Eventually, they'd just start eating the eggs shortly after she laid them.
