What’s the solution? Importing everything? I’d say it’s more sustainable to grow our own food. Besides - not just sustainably - the food we produce tends to be superior to mainland products. The tomatoes & cucumbers grown in Waimea taste like tomatoes & cucumbers. Not some weird facsimile that is mass produced. Our beef is grass fed & locally caught fish is line caught.
Hawaiian birds also had a huge problem with avian malaria that was introduced by the mosquitoes that came with colonialists, many bird species went extinct due to that disease.

Most of those went extinct decades ago, because of the introduction of cats, dogs and pigs, and other exotic animals.
It has very little to do with tourism.
